John Mcleveish Not really in business when companies are competing quality is also a factor. For example samsung and Apple can spit out a phone every years so they have to make sure each phone is better quality than the other and has more features. I'd rather have my competitors finish first and fail miserabley than them finish second and continue our toe to toe competition.

While what you say is correct, I think there is more to it. In order to develop the most efficient tech we're gonna make mistakes and fail but eventually the mistakes will lead to technological success (we're adapting off of our mistakes)... More competition only speeds up this process is in my belief.

Impressive but it missed mars orbit and is gonna get shredded by radiation and asteroids within a year or two so it’s just a waste of money. Although it was a brilliant marketing stunt for Tesla. NASA is currently exploring mars surface with the curiosity rover looking for water and possible future locations for human habitats/settlements. Which is really more impressive and important.

SpaceX launched the Tesla roaster into space to show that the falcon heavy can launch payloads near Mars. They we're not allowed to orbit Mars for legal reasons and they overshot a little bit but NASA has also had it's problems. You could say that the curiosity rover is the size of a mini Cooper and it landed on Mars, but the Tesla is bigger and heavyer. If they just do the same thing but replace the Tesla with a thing capable of navigating to Mars from where the falcon heavy sent it, it could get to Mars with a fairly large payload. Also landing on Mars is hard but comparible to the difficulty of landing on Earth the way SpaceX does it.

It is more like private vs private as NASA doesn't build its own hardware. This is more like old established private companies like ULA, Boing etc vs new space companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin. Public space agencies are vastly different. It isn't like every public organization is the same. NASA, ESA and the Russian space agency are quite different. It could be argued that SpaceX has had a lot of success by following a philosophy closer to that of the Soviet space program rather than NASA. I am detailing some of those similarities in these two articles: medium.com/@Jernfrost/most-interesting-rocket-engines-93b01af7ae4c medium.com/@Jernfrost/lean-software-development-and-soviet-rocket-design-10adf5b7a62e tl;dr both the soviets and spacex have stuck to simple designs like using the same fuel (kerosene) on all stages, multiple small engines rather than a few big ones, iterative development etc.

DarkLight even though it's private, it still is way behind on terms of foundation, where do you think space x launches its rockets from, its from NASA's launch pads. On top of that, they've never put a man in space before, Space X hasn't yet gone through the trial and error process that got NASA astronauts to the moon, such as the Apollo one disaster. Accidents are bound to happen, there will be setbacks, it's not all smooth sailing from here on out for you Martian MUSKeteers, colonization and even the basic exploration of Mars by humans is still farther away than many people think

I don't see why we should put restrictions on what NASA should do. If both NASA and SpaceX are competing to get to Mars, that would speed up development of technologies to actually get them there. A thought I did have though was that it would be cool if NASA focused on colonizing Venus and SpaceX focused on Mars. Either way though, increased competition is for the best.

The Joker 10259 Terraforming is hypothetical. Removing an amount of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide that pushes Venus' atmosphere to 91 atm in such a remote space much closer to the Sun would be quite a feat. Even colonizing Mars would move us only about 1% closer to that (if not a decimal of that).

Very different entities. SpaceX is all about making launches cheap. NASA is about research and development. BTW the first 'A' in NASA stands for aeronautic... aircraft, not spacecraft. NASA does research into aircraft too something SpaceX has no interest in. NASA does the stuff for which there will be no commercial interest in. SpaceX will never bother with a flyby of Pluto or space telescopes or an orbiter around Vesta & Ceres. NASA blazes the trail and the private sector profits from commodity services and makes them cheaper and more efficient. Three cheers for NASA. Three cheers for SpaceX.

It's easy for NASA to get to mars but it's a one way trip and it's not worth human lives to study something we can do with rovers or on the moon. If they really want to they can use nuclear engine and liquid hydrogen fuel to get there in 70 days. The challenge is return to earth with enough Dealt V. because mars has 1/3 of the gravity and you have a payload of 16,000KG(that's what the falcon heavy payload is to mars) your going to need a rocket that weighs 474,000kg but the payload is 16,000. so every time you add more Dealt V the efficiency goes down as you have to add a extra 1/3 thrust for return. Edit: you could sling shot using the moon but with the rocket like falcon heavy or using nuclear engines they aren't designed for short powerful burns to change there parry apps to intercept with it to gain it's full potential. also to get them lining up it would make it very hard for you to rely on the moon and mars if you need a supply create at the mars station and improving risk of the colony staving or out of oxygen.

The Orion Capsule and SLS, Space Launch System, can vastly outperform the falcon 9 heavy in terms of thrust to weight and carrying capacity, NASA is a larger less nimble organization than SpaceX and has a much broader focus, however after over 100 manned and over 1000 unmanned missions currently has a 98%+ mission success rate, while spaceX has approximately a 93% launch success rate which is lower the industry standard, 95% success rate. In short NASA has vastly more experience, more funding, and given proper direction could easily transport humans to the outer solar system by the 2040s

My qualm is more around a human emotion which cannot be measured (only described) becoming divided into four basic words (angry; happy; sad; wow or whatever) on a social media site and these reactions then becoming something you actively associate and relate to various world events (some very deathly, and shoved in your face every time you "go for a scroll"), and I just think there's heaps of bullshit there just to get "Reactions" (a.k.a controversy in some ways), and social media (I'm really referring to Facebook mostly) to me is basically regular exposure to content designed to engineer your mind to consume (easy example is clickbait headlines and controversially styled news) and thus generate revenue. Its really a personal choice how aware of this sort of thing you are, and even then you have to be responsible for yourself and how often you use media like Facebook (suppose its like smoking in a way), etc and I apologize if I lost the subject matter, however it's just too much to type for for 4 am. Meh, it's only an internet opinion anyway and the truest communication is in the flesh.

One of the most fantastic recent inventions was SpaceX's development of a rocket that could be reused, thus saving billions of dollars over time. I would say that currently, they would be the ones winning the public vs. private "space race". Let's hope NASA is able to do something to level the playing field, as they have become reliant on that same rocket to transport goods. Paying 130 million for each transport is better and cheaper than having to develop a rocket every time, which could cost billions.

Canada would win with a minor victory. If no allies are involved then it all comes down to population and manpower, Canada has double the people as Australia which gives them an edge. Besides that, both countries basically share all the same hardware and have near the same amount of all hardware. So if no allies are involved Canada wins. However, if allies were involved Australia would win. The USA would stand out of this battle but the UK would side with Australia, New Zeeland, Japan, India and China would fund Australia while Canada would be funded by nobody. That's because Australia and Canada both have amazing relations with Europe so they wouldn't get involved. These battles would be fought in air and sea and there wouldn't be any land battles because Australia is so inhospitable that it is basically impossible to invade and it is the same with Canada. Therefore after a few months with basically no damage to each others country, there would be peace, forced by the EU, Asia and the USA or even the queen could just say, "right you are no longer at war" and that's the end of that. Plus, both countries prefer peace over war so this war wouldn't be very interesting.

NASA vs SpaceX is an incorrect way to think about the competition. NASA never developed space craft. NASA hired companies like Boeing, North American Aviation, Douglas Aircraft, North American Rockwell and Northrop Grumman to build the space craft. It is these companies whom SpaceX is in competition with, not NASA.

It may be impossible to move faster than light, but bending space around a ship could, technically, make it travel at speeds faster than light. And their are solar sails that NASA is planning to send to other solar systems to take detail photographs at 15% the speed of light. They would take a while, but they would get there in time for our lifetimes to still be ongoing. And I believe you made a mistake as the closest star system is 4.3 light years away not 1.5 light years.

OhioansAreMyFavoritePeople True what you said about the star xD Yeah solar sails that can go up to 15% speed of light have been planned, the problem is the acceleration. The need to start very near the sun and use the acceleration in a straight line all the way across the solar system to get to that speed, which is incredibly hard to do

Do not forget that the budget they put into the army aims to defend the country and therefore defend NASA as well. It's not so easy to talk about budget because they also have to maintain their place as the 1st world power for many reasons that we do not even imagine. The development of the country in all fields, including space research, is part of it.

Last year at university I actually had to write a 25-page research paper about precisely this topic, comparing the private space industry to government-run approaches like NASA. During my research, I found a few sources that were compelling and labelled what you've mentioned in this video as SpaceX being the "direct approach" method, while NASA uses more of a "stepping stone" method. The problems with the stepping stones are that you can get bogged down and sidetracked at each step, possibly never reaching your end goal. And the problems with the direct approach is that if not enough safety is tested for you could end up reaching your goal but having suffered more casualties than necessary. In the end, I came away with the conclusion that the direct approach method was the best idea, as long as enough focus could be kept on safety. I'd rather have made it to Mars and suffered a few losses than never made it at all because of bureaucracy getting in the way of progress.
