Totally makes sense that areas built on landfill would sink.

New Orleans has been steadily sinking forever. It was built on clay soil. The pressure of the city squeezes the water out of it like a sponge, and the city sinks.

The most ancient dwellings we can find, which are still intact, were either built underground or inside of mountains or cliffs. Yet, our 'advanced' modern society continues to erect constructs, which have a short lifespan, are exorbitantly expensive, and offer little protection against natural disasters. How can we not expect that thousands of years from now, future archaeologists will be unearthing the remains of todays skyscrapers and wondering what happened to such a huge population?

Yes, the global warming/climate change people need to be told that the sea level isn't rising but the coastal cities are sinking under their own weight. 1,000 people per square mile on top of all that concrete and steel. Built on swamp land in some areas, they had to dig to bedrock for a foundation. The garbage landfills probably don't help, just more raised surface area, so the rainfall fills up the reduces flat land. Its possible, among many other things. Plus all the tunneling leads to seepage from ground water and ocean possibly.

Then last year some company bought more than half the parking lot and starting a construction. All the boroughs (maybe except for Staten Island since it’s disconnected and because it’s more Suburban there and has more forests. And maybe the Bronx since it’s connected to the mainland) will sink or have serious water rising in a hundred years or so or whenever the scientists predict it will. All that land is under water and new lands started popping up to the surface. So, I’m thinking if it’s possible that new lands will be made and will reach the surface a bit higher once all countries or few countries have sinked. Dude they built up parts of New York when they were writing the maps. It hasn’t always looked like that nyc is man made and if something use to exist it was built over Which is exactly what they’re saying: hey these landfills will be built but it will take 200-300 years for that mound of trash to degrade and turn to earth and dirt. And then you get a dipshit who says let’s build major stuff right ontop of those landfills which we know will start as a hill of trash and over years reduce itself to a flat terrain if not cave in on itself and cause a small sinkhole due to improper drainage. They poured concrete and asphalt onto trash not gravel and the rest of the city and parks same deal it was built upon and over and taken down and built back up.

When You think about it it’s not far fetched. All that combined weight from buildings and millions of people, cars etc. on a small circumference and perimeter of land already surrounded by water/ocean… makes logical sense when thought about. When war elephants were used they would have to be brought onto a large flat DRY surface of land or else they risked collapse of the ground especially if wet. How much worse and true this is when dealing with thousands of buildings and millions of people and vehicles on small piece of land. The ratio is not evenly distributed per square mile.

It’s both. Also some areas of land are rising. That’s part of the reason why relative sea level rise varies around the world. This sinking is related to isostatic rebound. Sea level rise is due to continental ice loss and thermal expansion
