NASA’s Infrastructure Crisis, Explained | WSJ

The Deep Space Network, NASA’s main communications infrastructure, is overburdened. Spacecraft billions of miles away rely on this network of giant satellite dishes to communicate with Earth. NASA officials are worried about the network’s ability to support future missions, as the agency pivots toward extended human exploration of the moon.
WSJ explains how NASA’s infrastructure got to this critical stage - and what it’ll take to fix it.

The Near Space Network includes ground antenna stations located around the globe. www.nasa.gov/near-space-network/

Private satellite companies (like Space X) should be required to relay DSN signals from space to the control center. Space X has over 5,000 satellites laid out in a grid to cover the planet. (A planet sized satellite dish) Simply add a small dish facing space to each satellite and use the huge number of satellites to collect strong DSN signal. Then use Starlinks network to transmit this signal to the control center. Also finish to project from 2010 too.

Pretty sure SpaceX is looking at something like that already. They're gearing up for lunar and Mars missions and already planning their own comms network. Especially when Starship is in service and sending up the highly capable version 2 sats, it shouldn't be much of a stretch to scoop up transmissions from other projects. Lotta surplus capability.

I'm getting mixed signals all over this video: It's a crisis - because things are working for longer than expected? "We need budget" but they also are constructing a new network to handle non-deep space traffic. I think a more neutral tone would be more appropriate: "here's the state of the DSN and it's finances".

Contextually, his statement seems to be true from an engineering perspective. According to Wikipedia, Margaret H. Hamilton is the person who came up with the idea of naming the discipline, software engineering, as a way of giving it legitimacy during the Apollo program. Maybe software study and design prior to would've been referred to as computational science instead?

The problem is that there would be no competition, if DSN handles like 70% of the deep space communication in total and NASA is by far their biggest customer. There are attempts of private companies for deep space communication like Goonhilly or Viratec, but their performance is significantly behind NASA and ESA antennas.
