NAS Synology DS920+ Fan Replacement

Ойын-сауық

I'm trying something new for this channel. Not a supercut or the like, but a more technical video, where I show you how to replace the original fans of the NAS Synology DS920+. I recently bought this great piece , but was unsatisfied with the fans, since it's running in the living room. I hope this might help someone who is in the same position of asking themselves how to go about replacing those fans. Enjoy!
Update: So far I haven't had any problems with the ultra low noise adapters and editing video footage directly on the NAS. Be sure to give them a try, since they will make the fans almost inaudible.

Thanks for the video. I filled mine with SSDs and the fans are the only noise I hear from it and even on low, it still makes more noise than I expected. Can't wait.

Thanks for the excellent guide, worked real good on my DS920+. Only thing was that DSM did not like the low noise adapters, one fan stopped after ~2 min and the other one was going really fast. Without the adapters it works real well!

My NAS was still too loud for me even after the conversion to the new fan. The suspicion fell on possible air turbulence on the rear wall of the housing because the air cannot escape in a laminar manner. The suspicion was confirmed, because when I cut away the thick plastic grille with a side cutter, it became MUCH quieter and I am now happy with the solution.

Glad to hear you could fix it. Have you also tried the ultra low noise adapter, that comes with the noctua fans? Maybe it can help to reduce the noise even further.

The same noise level with Noctua NF-A8 FLX than with the original fans (DS420j), and much more overheating problems. Switched back to original fans.

The original fans seem to be better then the Noctua's. So I'm now looking at Be Quit, they have some awesome fans, silent as well.. but will look at other brands too until i find the one that is best!

I have a Synology DS918+ and I wanted to use the Noctua NF-A9 FLX fans, but Noctua was telling me that newer software updates can cause problems. E.g. a failure is reported and the NAS refuses to run with a "defective" fan.

  • @acdmonteiro

the fans should blow towards outside. They have arrows pointing the airflow. Just make sure the stickers on the fans are facing back and that would be fine.

Yes, there is mainly a FLX (3-pin) and a PWM (4-pin) version of the NF-A9. Also other versions, like 5V (also 3-pin) exist. Make sure to get the FLX version for the Synology DS920+. Sorry I didn't point that out in the video. I hope you were able exchange your fan!

Whats the point of getting quieter fans when the main cause of noise for these devices is the hard drives being loud under load?

The point is that most such NAS'es used at home are idle most of the time, especially at night, and fans are the main cause for the noise.
