First time I heard this it was on a mixtape and I was barely a teenager. I loved Wu Tang and how east coast rap put the lyrics before the beat, the music was the setting to the story. West coast rap was usually a banger of a beat being rapped thru. Both coasts rocked it but Nas was on a whole other level as a lyricist and storyteller. The boy is a goat on people's list and deserves it.

The real Tom Hardy I feel like all the rappers often declared as GOAT, Pac, Nas, Jay, Big, Em, Andre, etc, are all the best at different aspects of rap. Big has a great style and flow, Nas is a great storyteller and lyricist, Pac has such strong emotion and goes off on deep subjects, Em has crazy complex rhyme schemes and hilarious punch lines. Nas is my GOAT because I value lyricism and storytelling in a song. But if I liked flow more Biggie would probably be my favourite.

This is the single greatest rap song ever!!! The story, lyrics are absolutely ridiculous!!! You can just picture everything he saying!!! Just spitting bars nonstop, UNBELIEVABLE!!! I purchased my first rap record in 1979 at the age of 13. However, NY STATE OF MIND, I must’ve played a million times over the years! The ILLMATIC cd is in my truck and I play NY state of mind on repeat constantly!!! Absolutely genius writing!!!!
