Sadly, the latest generations of today don't understand how different the 90s (and 80s) were, particularly concerning hip hop and the hood. Everybody wasn't enamored with chasing the bag. Sure, there was a part of hip hop that focused on money, hoes, and drugs, but there was also a segment of hip hop that was all about combining knowlege with lyrical skill. And yes, I realize there are current rappers that are proficient lyricists, but it's a small number. The yearning for knowledge within hip hop isn't there like it used to be. I remember when b-boying played such a major role in hip hop, if we weren't rhyming in school, we were breakin'. The 5 elements meant something to us; hip hop was almost like our religion. Nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find a well-known rapper that knows the elements. It's absolutely amazing that artists are able to, not only make a living, but generate large sums of wealth off of hip hop. As great as this is, I truly feel that the prospect of becoming wealthy has attracted one-dimensional "artists" and has lead actual talented artists astray. Before it felt like the love of hip hop lived in the community, unfortunately, now it seems like it only lives on in individuals.
@omariorou1339
3 жыл бұрын
Yea it's called conscious Hip-Hop. That was mostly in the 80s and 90s. Intellectual complex lyricism. As a matter of fact, that's how Hip-Hop was created...thus it's acronym...Higher - Infinite - Power - Healing - Our - People!

It is such a privilege to have grown up with this man’s music now at 46. If there are any young kids in this thread there are hip hop artiste rappers and MC’s that can change and save your life. Nas most definitely did that for me giving me a different way and perspective to look at my circumstances and be careful who I choose as friends.
Whew!!! I miss these days!!! THE GOAT!!!
I like how he was trying to bring awareness on the war on drugs back in the 90s with some folks didn’t want to see it as a problem.

So humbly spoken 🔥

Yea it's called conscious Hip-Hop. That was mostly in the 80s and 90s. Intellectual complex lyricism. As a matter of fact, that's how Hip-Hop was created...thus it's acronym...Higher - Infinite - Power - Healing - Our - People!
He who inspired me to become one the realest out here doing this. One love to Nas..thank ur for ur influence and keeping it real. It's bcuz of u I learned to be myself and to not fake anything. Much love.
