Narrowband with the Celestron RASA 8! EPIC first light review & setup guide.

The clouds parted and I was able to snatch the Carina nebula in mono/narrowband in 74 mins of total integration time! An incredible telescope with an incredible target - couldn't go wrong really.

    Unbelievable results Dylan, and great video to show how capable these scopes can be at F2, would really have expected a lot of vignetting at the corners and CA, but looks good and looks promising.. Nearly all lens manufacturers pop out lens at F1.4 ect and you get the lens only to find its useless at the widest aperture and requires you to close it down about 2 stops ... so yeah.. great example with the RASA, Celestron would need to put your name a cheque for this one. clear skies.

    My finger's been hovering over the "buy now" button for one of these for a while now. But actually, your image shows a major reason why I still haven't bought one. At F2, every little thing shows up in your image. Basically, even with your dedicated adaptation etc, the working distance is off (see corner stars), and one side is even out of focus (probably sensor tilt). So getting something like this working perfectly seems like a full time job :D Still, very interesting and honest review, so thanks!

    First rule of all astronomers/astrophotographers...you can never have too many scopes!! :) Same with photographers as well, you can never have too many cameras. The little 8" will just be your portable, go to RASA for when you get out of town and into those Bortle 1and 2 skies. Along with your ED80/100/120/150 or whatever 'frac you also have. And, the Mak 127/150 for your planetary and lunar needs :) And, what's not to say you can't put up another Nex-Dome in the backyard :) Those palm trees were so yesterday!!! :P Or, you like a property just outside of Byron that has all that room for the kids and the scopes :) Nah, I'll say it again, you can't have too many scopes.

    Glad to see you like it enough you want to keep it.... A couple of "silly" questions come to mind... - Do you think the ZWO camera with the IMX294 would see just as much success? - Would running a monochrome camera help with light pollution? (this seems to be a common question, but nobody ever seems to answer it?) - Would an f2 setup be too much of a "learning curve of death" for someone who's relatively new to astrophotography? Also, wow... Those f2 filters are... expensive.

  • @DylanODonnell

    @DylanODonnell

    5 жыл бұрын

    Re IMX294 - Bill Long in the comments here says no. I couldn't say. Re LP.. yes this setup will work in light polluted areas because of the narrowband filters.. Re: F2 learning curve - quite the opposite! F2 actually makes it easy. Wide focal length, short exposures. It's very forgiving. Some people even call it cheating ;)

  • @jasonnewton1998
    @jasonnewton19985 жыл бұрын

    new f/2 baader narrowband filters came in last week, they used a new process on these. I also went baader UFC, their drawers are still magnetic but they have little handles too. They likely got it working on the rasa 8 since they had that last december, likely using the same zero-spacer approach with the camera flush. It's modular adapters too, direct to other rasa's and some other common sizes. Cheaper drawers+compatibility for mounted and unmounted also won me over.

  • @jasonnewton1998

    @jasonnewton1998

    hmm, wonder if your ghosting/reflections were from the filters. Did you have another camera to try? Remember the asi 1600 sensor doesn't' have an AR coating on the sensor either. And these adapters are awfully expensive.

  • @DylanODonnell

    @DylanODonnell

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeh I think it’s the 1600s fault for sure. I don’t have access to as many vendors here but I imagine Starizona May lose some market as the hyperstar solution so providing adapters for RASA isn’t their ideal business model. They’ve always been good for me though.

    Great video and great shot, I can't wait to get to Chile to try to shoot Carina as well. The square pattern is caused by the lack of AR layers directly on the sensor of the ASI cameras which is shame and you can't really get rid of it while doing RGB. It ruined my Horsehead nebula but there's not many targets with stars that bright and it's still a great camera.

    Hey mate, Great video and entertaining. If it has not been mentioned already, the square stars are most likely micro lensing artifacts from the array. Why would we see these? Well, with an F/2 system, you are saturating the wells of the cmos array pretty quickly and you'll see some scatter into adjacent lenses. The example you showed at the end of your video shows the lensing effect pretty clearly.

    I’m sort of convinced I need a RASA or I might die. I have a few questions and you the guy to ask because I don’t know anyone else who owns the 11” & the 8”. I have some concerns around what seems like limited camera options. The weight of the 11 and finally the build quality of the 8. My first question because this could be a dealbreaker, I have a EQ6R Pro mount, can it handle a 11” RASA? Assuming my mount is good the next thing I’d like to know is whether the 11 offers more flexibility in camera choices? Is the RASA a bit of a toy or is it a decent piece of kit?I burnt my fingers buying an AVX not realising that it’s actually a toy and not a real mount. As always, I enjoy your channel and thanks for the effort you put into it.

    How is your laptop connected to your setup? Also, Celestron trumpets the fact that no guiding is really necessary, yet you did a 10 minute exposure with guiding? One guy got criticism for his 3 minute exposures that were "blasting out the stars". I am certainly not knocking your results! Pretty awesome. I would just like to understand what you do with the Rasa 8 so that I can try to mimic you.

Which version did you use and do you think it is critical to select the F2. I have seen conflicting views and you are definitely the expert in this field 😊. Kind regards THU

    Hi Dylan, thank you for the videos you do, I was in the market for a new scope and after watching your review on the RASA 8 I decided to go with it on a CGX and the ZWO ASI294MC, even guiding with the ZWO mini guide scope used in the video. I’m shooting from a small island in the Caribbean (18, -65) and my first couple of attempts haven’t shown much. I did 15 - 30sec exposures of the Pelican nebula and couldn’t see much if any nebulosity during and after post processing. I don’t have any filters yet but I’m on the edge of a class 3 / 2 dark sky so I didn’t think I would need any. Can I get your thoughts?

    The Rasa seems to be very interesting. I wonder how eg a rasa 11 compares to a regular celestron 11 plus hyperstar. Pricewise its around the same, but removing the hyperstar would still make the telescope usable at higher focal lenghth if needed. What are the advantages of the rasa over the hyperstar?

One of the frequently mentioned issues is tilt and when I pixel peep your excellent image, I can see some aberrations in the bottom right and top left corners. Is this tilt? If so, do you know the cause? Thanks for the excellent vid.

I have the possibility of getting a RASA 11 at a very good price, maybe even near the price for the RASA 8, so I am going back and forth between the 8 and the 11, not knowing which one to get. I'm not sure I understand... piggybacking means riding the telescope. So it doesn't use the telescope. Do you mean using a DSLR on the front instead of a CCD/CMOS astro cam? You can only do that with an 11" .. I don't think the RASA8 focal distance allows DSLR as the chip is too far back.
