Audio taken from an interview conducted with Nancy McWilliams ( • On Narcissism 4: Nancy... , with permission from the creator): This video goes over narcissism from a psychoanalytic perspective and discusses dependency, the narcissist's difficulty with showing genuine gratitude or giving a genuine apology and then goes into treatment.
The video delves into the intricacies of narcissism within the Narcissistic Relationship Cycle:, focusing on a discussion with Dr. McWilliams. It highlights a narcissist's struggle in acknowledging dependency and genuine feelings due to upbringing emphasizing perfection and grandiosity and helps explain what it feels like to be a narcissist. This lack of emotional understanding leads to difficulties in expressing remorse or gratitude authentically, hindering relationship repair. Narcissists often resort to superficial gestures, like preparing meals or offering praise, without addressing underlying issues, which proves ineffective in improving relationships. Additionally, narcissistic individuals may struggle to identify and process nuanced emotions beyond rage or envy due to a lack of emotional vocabulary and upbringing without proper emotional guidance. The video also touches upon neuroscientific research indicating that some individuals may genuinely lack awareness of their emotions, further complicating treatment approaches. Different treatment for narcissist vary, with approaches focusing on developmental issues and addressing maladaptive coping mechanisms like devaluation. Therapy involves guiding individuals towards a healthier developmental trajectory or addressing early deviations from it, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and tailored approaches in therapy.

The part about narcissists not being able to identify their feelings I feel dangerously restrictive and perhaps only relevant to extreme cases, and I think it would be a good idea to try differentiating that from narcissism. Anecdotally I'm pretty sure I've come across many narcissists who can introspect and identify their feelings quite accurately (even their own narcissism), and I'm pretty sure I've come across non-narcissists who can't identify or express their feelings (trauma survivors, schizoid patients or people with some sort of dissociative identity).

Personally, I think the "core" characteristic of narcissism worth focusing on is the "need to be perfect". I see the distinction between grandiose and fragile narcissism as the distinction between the delusional/reality-denying and over-critical/hyperanalyzing forms of dealing with that need. And I think the best form of treatment revolves around learning that imperfection gets rewarded as much (if not more so) than perfection (especially fake perfection). Which means, as you point out in this video, learning to apologize, make mistakes, and accept praise. The "self-centerdness" for which it's named, I think, is a byproduct of excessive self-monitoring and self-analysis.

They will also do this by studying their previous partners complaints, current partners complaints plus their ability to read and memorize information. Many times them "expressing their emotions or feelings" seems hopefully. We think... "they're finally hearing me and seeing they're the problem. " This gives us hope and we stay. They'll literally cry and swear they'll change. BUT...ASK them what's their next step then?! Usually it's all talk no action. They are desperately trying to make you think emotionally not logically. (NOT ALL just my thoughts)
