Nanlite Forza 60 in depth Review | Battery Grip | vs Sokani x60 | Practical Tests

As an affiliate, I may earn from qualifying purchases:* Nanlite announced their Forza LED series last year at NAB 2019, I got a chance to see them during the announcement and was initially excited to see a lower priced competitor to the Aputure. But it has yet to be seen if they are about the same or if Nanlite has any special sauce in the mix. This week I give the Nanlite Forza 60 a run to see how it performs before Apurture enters the game with their 60w flavor.

    Hey hey 4CardsMan! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Hmm thats a good point, I didn't think about the incompatibility of other fresnel attachments from other brands. I do wonder though since COB LED's more or less throw light pretty wide before entering into the fresnel optics. I wonder if it would make that much of a difference. I wish I had the aputure fresnel to test this theory since they made theirs specific to their COB line. I know there are cheaper ones by third part brands, but they are definitely smaller than the aputure optics so I'm not sure if they will create the same desired effect. Great point though! Great review! Oh good! Their bowens adapter is finally coming out! I was wondering if this was actually going to happen. When I asked Nanlite a few months ago the were very coy about it. So, I wonder how these two lights stack against the new Intelly Tech x100.

  • @TLDR_filmmaker

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey hey again Steven! The Bowens adapter definitely helps justify the positioning of the Forza 60 in their lineup, part of me wishes they just went with the standard bowens but I think the reason is for the Forza 60 to be its own stand alone kit of lights. If I had full control of a lighting area, you can easily deploy 3+ forza 60s and create some great looks (with or without the fan). Their size is so small too, really fun to use. As for the Intelly Tech LC x100, they put out some lux measurements and actually measured at 2m away! Their lux readings looks like, at any given temperature and full 70 degree flood, will be at around 400 more lux than the Forza and X60, albeit at a hefty price point.

    Hey hey Thoe! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I would definitely go a 60 and fs150 or just two FS150 so that you have maximum control and the most power for your budget. I didn't realize the FS150 price was so much cheaper than the forza 60. Probably because of the LED chip set they are doing instead of the tradition COB of the forza 60. Going through a softbox should be fine vs a bare LED that may or may not case multi-shadow. For your budget I would say get the most power so that you can always be able to adjust your needs. Having one at half power and then realizing you may need more is not where I want to be, especially given the price difference. If battery is a concern, I feel based on your needs you're always near power. And if not, I would just purchase a solar camping generator with a Pure-Sine wave and call it a day. Hope this helps! Hey hey Ruben! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Both of these options are quite similar in terms of light performance as you can see in the comparison portion. In terms of build quality and size, they are similar with the Forza being lighter feeling. Forza's build quality is also much better overall while Sokani uses cheaper parts in its powerbrick. The Sokani X60 v2 is definitely a cheaper version that has its own pros and cons depending on what is more important for you (aka light quality accuracy, construction, warranty, deployability etc) I still go by price to performance ratio. If you are a beginning filmmaker on a budget and developing your overall kit, I would say the Sokani x60 v2 will fit the bill. If you are a working professional and are starting to mature your lighting kit, I would go towards the Nanlite Forza 60. While I have not personally tried the Nanlite Forza 60 battery grip on the Sokani just yet, there has been confirmation from some users that it does work. And technically it should because both lights do require the same voltage and amps from their powerbricks. So theres no reason it wouldn't. However I always think cautiously and don't want to fry anything, I'm waiting on my watt-meter to see what the powerbricks are pulling into the lights. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! I would highly recommend the Forza 60 specific Fresnel and light bank. The fresnel may only fit the 60, but since the output of the 60 via the Fresnel is several stops brighter than the 200/300 in a larger light bank, most users would have the perfect ratio. I use my 200 in a bank at full power and add my 60 w/ fresnel as a highlight at 20 to 30%. In addition, my Forza 60 light bank came with both the proprietary "Mini" Bowens ring for the 60 and a standard Bowens ring for any Bowens mount unit, you can quickly swap the rings in the base of softbox. [Why isn't Nanlite marketing the Crap out of that?] This may be a new thing, did anyone else get both speedings with soft box?. The other excellent reason is that these items are a very good value, The fresnel is $99 and the bank dropped from $179 to $119.

I know I talked to their marketing team about what the engineers needed to consider for their line up. I'm not sure if any of my critiques got to them. Hey hey Stephan! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Yes you can, for my setup during the short. I purposely used some paracord to hang it on the Light's yoke to act as a counter weight as I putting a much larger softbox on the Bowens adapter than what it was rated for. For a light stand setup I'll probably continue just using the paracord and hanging it on the light stand tension knobs. I like that better in general when working with lights. But if I go handheld with the light, I can attach to either the bowens light stand socket or the lights own socket, whichever gives me the most stability for the setup. Hope this helps! Other videos that I saw of the Forza 60 seem like it puts out a bit harsher light than the aputure. Any help would really be appreciated since I am going to buy one of the two within the next week's to come. Thanks for the great video!

  • @TLDR_filmmaker

    @TLDR_filmmaker

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey hey Adam! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I actually just made a video yesterday about the 60w class of LED's and I dive into some details in where I believe they fit into a persons kit depending on a few variables. As far as what I recommend. I get asked this quite a bit and I will eventually put a definitive video that explains why this is not an answer anyone can really make for someone. Long story short, it really depends on what you're filming and your understanding of lighting and how it plays with your camera, the last bit of the equation is your own personal taste of how you like to shoot things. Some like shallow depth of field, some set dress and want deeper depth of field. If you are a one man band looking to have a light to handle most situations. Then a 120d is your better bet because its better to have more light than not enough depending on your filming situation. The 60w class is for filmmakers that have 100% complete control of the lighting in their filming situation and have enough light modifiers to get the scene to where they want it to be. Which brings me to the point there you said you saw that the Forza 60w was harsher than a 120d in the examples you have seen. This is not because the Forza is inherently a harsher light than a 120d. Their COB LED is about the same size. The appearance or harsh light depends on how far or close is the light to the subject, (The further away it is, the harsher it looks). It also depends if the filmmaker tried to diffuse it and create a larger illuminated source to soften the light from looking so harsh. But even if they do diffuse it and place it really far away from the actor, it will still look somewhat harsh. Its really hard to try and convey these principles through a comment. But hopefully this kind of gives you an idea that its not about the lighting and powerful it is, thats only part of the equation. The next step is to understand how to place and manipulate that power to get what you want. I would definitely look at some lighting videos and see how and were they place the light and diffusion, and hopefully they share their camera settings. This will give you an idea of how powerful of a light you need for your style of filmmaking. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

    You're most welcome! As far as my initial research back when the 120T and 120D were coming to market. The 120T technically has the most color accuracy than the 120D. However these days more people are working with daylight color temps than they are with tungsten temps. So lets say you got the 120T but you are filming a scene where you wanted the window light to come in. If you light you subject with the 120T and white balance to tungsten, the room will look super blue. Your subject will look normal, but the rest will be blue. If you lit the subject with a 120D instead and white balanced for daylight, the subject and the rest of the room will look normal. Of course vice versa, if you are lighting a night scene in the house and you have tungsten bulbs in light fixtures and you are lighting your subject with the 120D and white balance for it. The tungsten bulb will give a more orange appearance than normal. Now depending on your type of films and tastes, these can be a powerful color contrast to use. I do this all the time where I purposely light my actor with the opposite color-temp around them to get a drastic counter color shift. But this is because I mainly film action oriented movies, if I was filming a romantic comedy I would not deploy this method. Kind goes back full circle to my first reply, theres a lot that goes into choosing and using your lights, it all just depends on what you're going for and your knowledge of how to manipulate the light and camera settings. Because someone may just say "why not use a tungsten gel instead" for the blueish room example. The reason I wouldn't necessarily do this is because I lose a lot of light output when I put a gel in front of it, causing me the potential that I won't be able to get enough light on my subject. Hope this helps and makes sense!

    I´m using the sokani v2 with nanlite battery grim and 2 durapro (chinese npf batterys 5200mAh) and the light stay on less than 10 minutes. Very strange this.

    Hey hey Humberto! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Hmm, my only guess is that the durapro's are not able to sustain the power draw even with both batteries working together. Or the Sokani is reaching some sort of heat that causes it to shut down. I don't remember if the Sokani has a overheating safety feature, it may because it has a temperature readout. Have you tried other batteries? Thanks again for stopping by! Hey man! Thanks for the review. It seems the connection of the Forza is the same as the Sokani, am i right? If so, is there any way you can try the battery grip of the Forza on the Sokani? My Sokani is on its way, but I am already looking a way to battery powered it. Cheers

    Hey hey camilocarvallo! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The connection is the same, but for whatever reason the the Sokani rated itself at 80w so I am waiting on a Wattage meter to double check whats going on before I plug it in and test. I don't want to fry anything or overload the battery. Stay tuned! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

    Well i have forza 60.... for close up thats perfect... what you already say... i shooting a music video and i am a virgin in lighting but i though 60 and a pavo tube 6c 2 to take off that works very nicely for me... in the next vid then. but i am also checking a bigger light source like the godox vl150 or 300.... instead of the forza 300. Vl150 489 euro vl300 799. Forza 300 1099 euro. But there os 25 procent discount now. So its almost the same price. For now forza 60 and 2 tube and aputure f7 will do the trick. Its small and i can shoot every place easily. Nice review btw.

    Hey hey Dutch4Motinon Film Works! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Definitely, the Forza 60 did a lot better for my needs than I thought even with the Fan off! The Pavo tubes they make look really interesting and it seems that Nanlite has almost everything I would need from one company for lighting a film scene. Looking forward to see what else Nanlite creates for the filmmaking market! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

    Hey hey Going Further! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Yes, you can use both at the same time. i have dobt between the sokani V2 and the forza 60 i like the forza fresnell and the capability of shut the sound but does the Forza 60 fresnel worth it?

  • @TLDR_filmmaker

    @TLDR_filmmaker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey hey again Felipe! As I explained towards the bottom line of the video, because of the pricing of the Forza 60 and its specifically proprietary mount for their fresnel and other softboxes with a weaker yoke. I can only see it being worth it if the filmmakers is planning to invest in all Nanlite Principle lights for their kit. For me I cannot justify spending that much money for a 60w light where its accessories are not usable for any other lights, to me thats a devastating design mistake. I'm hoping Godox will release an updated battery operated version of their popular SL60 lineup. The color is quite good and comparable to the Forza60 and you can use all standard bowens modifiers with it.
