This is a video from NAMM 1994. John Petrucci played at the Ibanez booth. I am not sure of the name of the song, if you know it please comment.

His phrasing and use of the Lydian Dominant mode was so much more apparent in the 90's. His note choices were so much more exotic with some chromatisicm. Today its mainly natural minor, Phyrigian, Egyptian minor 3 note per string 32nd note furries which tend to be more diatonic in nature. It's not bad but his playing today sounds more cliché. But his solo on The Looking Glass and Lost Not Forgotten seem to harken back to the days of old.

That's what I'm talkin bout! Hey was so fluid/phrase heavy/chromatic/experimental with the occasional jazz harmonies it was outta this world. This video is the perfect example of that. Nowadays, he's all about playing as fast as possible, which I still appreciate, but the cool note choice just isn't as prominent. BTW-I remember this jam was an interlude between songs during the Awake tour. When Jordan joined the band, I was hoping the experimentation would be elevated to another level

I think we can all agree that early Petrucci was like a monster Progressive/Fusion guitar player. Absolutely versatile with killer chops and phrases. I wish he does return to this style,I like what he does now but whenever I listen back to this I go like "Now this is John Petrucci". He seriously should consider getting his old side back with him stylistically and musically as well. Really hope he brings up this type of stuff in his new solo album, but it's just a hope I guess...

That's actually why l liked DT with Derek on keys. *Not* coming from a heavy prog/instrumental background, he brought a Jazz/Fusion side to the band that was really interesting. On the "Mind Control" bootleg (1-24-95 Japan) they play a jazzy, funky outro to "Take The Time" that's by far the best "live improvisation" I've ever hear from them.

Considering the fairly big change between Black Clouds going to Dramatic Turn, I think we are at least on the way back to a side of him more like this: more jazzy, progressive. I honestly think Portnoy was a big metal influence and Mangini is more a progressive flavor being added to the band. Obviously JP has a big metal side but Portnoy was the one that originally showed him and JMX metal, before they were more just progressive.
