Coming up with a business name seems to be the hardest part so far 😅 I’m too indecisive, even after watching this video I’m still twiddling my thumbs 😩

What is the price to register a Trademark for a business?

Yup, wish I'd listened to this when I heard it the first time. One year and $50 later I've filed a new DBA that gives me a lot more room to grow. ;)

I just discovered your channel while thinking about this topic for a handmade jewelry shop. This seems like kind of like a chicken-or-the egg type of thing. However, while watching this, I recalled passing a pub while visiting Edinburgh, Scotland called The Jolly Botanist - nothing about the name directly suggests pub, but if you walk past it (as we did) or look it up, you see what it is....and remember it. Thanks for this!

I was on a live sale from a podcaster, where I left a comment and question. Hallelujah! They pronounced my awful name PERFECTLY and recognized my work. Sometimes the weird names work? And if I pivot, it travels with the pivot.

In downtown Hobart, Tasmania there's an amazing bagel cafe called Bury Me Standing. I did a double take when I first passed by it because it just sounded awesome. I walked in out of curiosity and ended up being a regular customer!

Thank you for all this great info. I have a business under my name, Rebecca Hempe but considering enhancing or changing it. Im a seamstress by trade and just love to design and sew clothing and products. Im also expanding my little shop to include embroidery. You have given me some great ideas and I have a lot to think about how to brand myself and my Etsy shop.

As I make and sell handmade crochet hats from preemies to adults and the styles are animals Characters and regular hats

I love the content, so thanks so much for this video; it clarifies so much in a concise manner. By the way, Google does actually mean something in the mathematical\algorithmic realm, which is why they chose it. (This is something learned in IT. 🙂)

I named my shop "Quiet Stories" cuz I desided to create quiet books for kids but I think this name allows me to change my direction in the future, if I deside. I haven't thought about the name at all, it just came and now people like it.

When I first started, I was selling crochet and beaded bracelets, so I named my shop Yarning Over Beads. Now, though, I've taken all the beaded items out since they didn't sell and have only kept the crocheted items up. I'm thinking about taking those down too though (even though those do quite well), since they take 12 hours to make and replacing them with laser engraved items that take at most half and hour. I don't know whether or not I should change my name because if I'm only selling wood and leather items from now on, having yarn or beads in my name is not going to make sense at all, but it's the name I've used for years and I just don't know what to do

Thank-you so much, this is so helpful! I'm struggling with my shop name but your tips have helped me narrow it down significantly. May I ask what your advise is for naming a shop that wants to appeal to customers who speak different languages / multi-lingual (in my case, English and Spanish primarily)? Should I go for an invented name that can be easily pronounced in multiple languages or prioritize one language for an evokative name? This is for a handmade business inspired by sci-fi and fantasy worlds in books.

This was something that I was definitely using as an excuse to procrastinate. 😅 I've heard that in the long run, it's important for business owners to diversify. Is this possible (or even preferable) to do under the same business name? I'm no where near having to worry about this, but I was just curious. Thank you for all the handmade business tips!

I think it really depends on more on whether it then makes sense to sell all your products/services under one business (regardless of the name) but the name being detached from "what you sell" (example" Masaomi BAGS" or "SOAPS" or etc.) does help if you want to pivot :-)

Good question! The only way to check that would be manually trying it and seeing if the domain/handle is available. It can be a bit tedious for some people, but unfortunately, there's currently no alternative that checks across multiple/all platforms. - L

So I love my business name (Thor Designs), but unfortunately, it is not unique enough that to come up when typed into Google. Can I add something small to it or a word so I can still keep my name I love?
