TRANSCRIPT
Hello there and welcome to the Sounds American 4th of July special!
The 4th of July, or Independence Day, is a big national holiday in the United States.
On this day in 1776, thirteen British colonies declared their independence from England. This was the beginning of the US.
Several decades later, by 1836, there were 25 states in the USA.
Since then, the number of the states has increased to 50.
Do you know how to correctly pronounce the names of all 50 states?
That's what we'll practice in this video.
You can do this while getting ready for a barbecue with your friends.
[Pronunciation exercise]
This is how it works.
You'll see the name of a state on the screen and hear its pronunciation. Like this.
Repeat each state name after the speaker. The more time you spend practicing, the sooner you'll see progress.
Let's begin!

• Alaska
• Arizona
• Arkansas
• California
• Colorado
• Connecticut
• Delaware

+potato nugget , Why all caps and all the exclamation marks? Hope you're doing fine. 😊The names "Arkansas" and "Kansas" are pronounced differently since "Arkansas" was named for the French plural of a Native American tribe. In French, the final 's' is usually silent, so it's pronounced "Arkansaw." Kansas is named for the Kansas River. It's the English spelling though, so it's pronounced with the final 's'. Hope it helps!

Any other feedback on what could be helpful for your students would be MUCH appreciated.

+Scarleth Bula Paez , we have too many videos :), maybe just take a look at a couple of videos (any videos, though the last 5 videos are not translated yet)? Please don't do anything that will take more than 10 minutes of your time. if you just share your opinion about the subtitles in general - are they relevant, is the language good, if there are mistakes, etc. will be enough. You can send it to us via private message here on KZread or by mail: team at soundsamerican dot net. Whatever is more convenient for you. Thank you in advance from all of us in our team!

@@magnusbane7965 At least how I grew up saying it, the "rad" in Colo _rad_ o is not prounounced as rad from the word "rad", like "that's rad!", or the word radish, but closer to the word "rod" like fishing rod. So, more like Colo _rod_ o. This might be a regional thing but I've never heard anyone say the "rad" one. Hope that helps!

Sounds American I'm Brazilian as well. I dont have this struggling anymore. I'm going to explain ya . L at the end of word sounds as Long U in Portuguese. Therefore "until" come out as antiu when Brazilian pronounced it . Other Brazilian struggling is we pronounce every single letter . therefore Life come out as lai-fi (we pronounce lifey instead of life ) I hope you got what i said . it'll be helpful if you have some Brazilian students.
