now, that's touching: the nameless king's fighting style is a mix of his best friend's and his father's

I think his best friend was a "faithful first knight" (who could be Solaire idk) and then second Ornstein, because Ornstain instead was serving both Nameless king and this "faithful first knight". But yeah it makes sense that he could fight like Ornstein too Im basing myself in the "Sacred Oath" description from ds3

This is my first time seeing Nameless' statue restored in original DS1. He looks completely different, more like a young squire rather than somebody who could really betray his kingdom. He also started using his dad's shampoo after banishment, apparently. Edit: I just wanted to emend and correct myself - I meant he does not look like betrayer, not that I believed in him being one. Cheers.

Betray is a strong word. The people he "betrayed" were mostly power hungry gods and used his willingness to work with the evolving dragons as an excuse to banish him and seize power for themselves. Allying the dragons, rather than continuing the stagnant ways of Gwyn and his ilk may have potentially seen some benefit *for* his kingdom.

Not once in dark souls has the player ever witnessed true sunlight magic/miracles. Gwyn didn’t even use it in 1. All player cast miracles are just imitations used by reciting stories of sunlight magic. It wasn’t until dark souls 3 do we see sunlight magic used by the Nameless King. I like how Nameless King's leg armor has those flaps, called "pteruges", which were standard grecoroman waist armor in antiquity and medieval times. Makes sense how his armor has Roman parts, seeing how Archdragon Peak (among other areas) is inspired by Constantinople and its architecture.

Never in a thousand years, after fighting him hundreds of times, had I ever noticed that NK's moveset was pretty much a 1:1 mix of sped up Gwyn and Ornstein attacks. That is absolutely beautiful and mind blowing at the same time.
Wonder why Nameless King went hollow or near hollow since he’s not mad or crazed, he obviously found a new home and worshippers. Yet again Allfather Lloyd, his great uncle did kick him out and destroy all mention of him after he supposedly inherited the whole realm. I think it was a coup

I think the implication is that Gwyn and the other gods are not much different from humans. Gwyn in a sense went hollow after lighting the first flame and the Nameless King is more like an undead lacking humanity after many ages have passed. The Nameless King is likely the last of the old gods surviving in the world by DS3. In a way the straight line he took was the long way around.

Where in the lore or anywhere in the games does it say the gods don't turn hollow? I see people site this all the time but I've played the games multiple times and nothing I can recall makes this definitive. It's pretty clear to me that Gwyn is hollow at the end of DS1. Also, where in the lore or anywhere does it clarify what the difference between the gods and humans are?
This was one of my favorite moments in my first DS3 playthrough When I first fought the Nameless King I genuinely felt his move set was familiar but when I saw how he attacked and what he was wearing he just screamed "Gwyn" in the back of my mind. I was in complete shock when I realized I was fighting the First Born, like I had always wondered who he was playing through the games after reading the item description in of the Sunlight Medal in DS1 It was like a huge reveal just showing itself to me in single combat honestly the highlight of DS3 for me.

I can only wonder what the nameless king must think of his father, his legacy, and what he did to the world. A powerful man not willing to let go of something that doesnt belong to him, going as far as building a massive city in the middle of nowhere just to hide the dark soul. I still don't know whether to think of gwyn as an absolute failure and awful person or as almost heroic for the amount of things he did.

To this day I think the Nameless King is one of the coolest fights I've ever experienced playing video games.
Crazy how Fromsoft actually all but confirms that the nameless king IS Gwyn's first born It makes you think if Manus is truly the furtive pygmy or not
Thanks for showing the Sunlight Altar statue painstakingly put back together and comparing it to Gwyn and the Firstborn. It's curious that Gwyn seems to have ab armor of some kind on the rear plate for his torso. It's almost like the armor was accidentally put on backward, but with how even the intro cutscene uses the final game's arrangement, it probably wasn't an accident. The Firstborn looks and sounds like a hollow in DS3, whereas Gwyndolin, for all the abuse he has suffered and the time that has passed, is still recognizable as his DS1 self. If the queen of Lothric is indeed Gwynevere, rather than a daughter who took closely after her (a Ranni to her Rennala, so to speak), then Gwynevere is still able to have kids, but the Firstborn is all sorts of messed up. It doesn't seem like age did that to him, it's as though someone cursed him and burned his soul to fuel the First Flame. Perhaps removing the Firstborn's deific status wasn't just a symbolic gesture, and he was given the same treatment as the non-divine, the humans, and hit with the Darksign. Thanks again, Crest!
I had forgotten that they used Gwyn's hollowed boss fight model for his statue in DS1, which they corrected in DS3. Awesome stuff, love your channel Crest!
Nice touch showing off the resemblance the Nameless King death animation has to the one from Demon's Souls. I thought it looked familiar, but couldn't put it together. Fantastic and detailed video as always Crest!
It's really cool to see how much of the Dark Souls series is converged in the Nameless King, the boss. The lore, the fighting styles, a dragon of course, if anything could sum up Dark Souls it's that fight. Even the way get to Archdragon Peak, there's nothing more Dark Souls than hiding the best part from the players. It takes massive balls to do that aswell. There are so many stories and questions that are finally answered with Archdragon Peak and the Nameless King. As a fan of world-building and non-conventional (and GOOD) storytelling, I consider Miyazaki to be one of the greats.
This video is freaking awesome!! Thank you, nameless king is my top 3 bosses of all souls games and I have loved it! Keep going man

Most terrifying thing is he mixed Ornsteins fighting style with Gywns making a brutal and offensively brillant style of maintaining speed and damage together. He keeps you on your toes like Ornstein yet has the powerful strikes of Gywn. Its beautiful to behold yet terrifying to face considering hes using ACTUAL lightning magic and not just a copy of it. Him being thought to be Fareem the War God could be seen. Not to mention being one of the only figures in the games to befriend and even ride dragons making him even more dangerous to make a foe of.
Cool. I particularly like the father/son comparison. Such fine touches. It’s the little things that make these games great.

The whole thing about Ornstein becoming the king of storm made sense originally but with the comparison it's starting to seem less likely. @VioOrWhatever
2 ай бұрын
@@rigorm136 This is a bit of a stretch but it's also the closest example I can give. In Cyberpunk 2077, there's a part where Johnny brings you to this hotel that he used to live in years ago. In it you can find a pair of dog tags, and Johnny said it belonged to a fellow soldier that took a bullet for him. He died so Johnny could live. Thing is though, the dogtags are Johnny's if you look into it. So if you take all that into consideration what he's saying is that he stopped working for the man just before he went AWOL. One of the best things I've found about souls lore is that there's a lot pointing towards misleading information or the fact that you just get straight up lied to, an example of which is Gwyn sacrificing himself to the fire. A lot of things point towards him never doing that at all, and actually he sacrificed Ludleth to the fire. Why would Gwyn, a being similar but separate to humans, sacrificing himself to the fire then brand all humans? Wouldn't it make much more sense for a human being sacrificed to brand all humans? Anyway, point being. Ornstein, the firstborn, the god of war Faraam, etc. may have separate names in descriptions, but it's all notes taken by those who aren't those people in the first place. You're reading someone else's observation, not making the observation yourself. Ornstein could have left his name behind, ergo the nameless king. Everyone knows Ornstein well enough for an illusion of him to work in Anor Londo after all, but no one really knows who the nameless king is.

They aren't hollowed because they aren't human. Hollowing and the undead curse are just human things.
