it’s because lily actually watched mamma mia so many times when she got the role so she could learn how meryl did it. she knew she was never gonna be able to fill meryls boots but you could tell she did it in honour of meryls donna. anyone else would have just said “no it’s my role. donna will be my version”. she knows donna belonged to meryl and she didn’t wanna take over that. and i love that so much about her.

The fact that Donna calls the fiancé beautiful shows that she, unlike most girls in the situation in other movies, acknowledges that it’s not the fiancé’s fault and that neither of the girls did anything wrong. It’s a nice touch showing how selfless Donna is.

Don’t get me wrong, I *absolutely* love the first Mamma Mia - however, I definitely *LOVE* the second one much more. I feel the storyline explains everything so much better. Granted, the plot may have changed a bit since the first one like the order Donna met the guys and how she met them and/or what she was doing when she met them but in this movie, you can definitely feel how different each relationship was and the connection between her, Sam, Harry and Bill.

Yeah, the second movie definitely had more effort put into it plot wise. The first one was hard to follow in that term. Not to mention, the musical numbers flow a lot better in the second one. The first one kind of made them a little choppy

Violet Rose I absolutely agree. The plot is just so much better and I said, it explains the “affairs” between Donna, Bill, Harry and Sam a lot better. Even though the storyline is a lot different from the first, I like this set up so much better. Also, I still have this feeling that Bill is Sophie’s father. Only because Donna found out she was pregnant not long after Bill left. That’s my theory.

The tone of Sam 's voice was enough to know that he really regretted hurting Donna when they were younger 💔😢

I love that Donna acknowledges that she has every right to be mad and heartbroken as Sam’s fiancé. Usually the girl who the guy gets with during his relationship with the other girl says something like “well he must’ve got bored of her and that’s why he got interested in me”. I love how Donna knows he used her just as much as the fiancé and she also makes a point to call her beautiful.

I love the fact that she actually took the time to let him speak, most scenes the woman just storm off not letting the man speak. And as little as he did explain, those questions were actually the ones you need in order to understand he messed up and she is just too hurt to be with him

The fact that she filmed this with a sprained ankle proves she is amazing. She also filmed the Waterloo number with a broken toe.

Totally agree, it's heartbreaking. I mean, we knew it would happen in some way, shape or form, but still I feel really bad for both of them. Yeah Sam fucked up, he fucked up ROYALLY, but let's not forget that he left to end things with his fiancé and came back as soon as he could. It was unfortunate timing, that Donna was off with Bill right then and only learned of Sams return over 20 years later.

I always liked Sam the very least because of this. I would have sent him packing when he came back the second time. Screw him. I still think Bill is Sophie's biological father anyways.

2:57 the dialogue was so perfect and powerful.

People don't understand love at all. Love works in the most mysterious ways. It may hurt people, may bless people or anger people. But he came back a 3rd time years later. What he did to his fiance was wrong as was what he did to Donna. But he came back and she had always loved him since they were young. And so they wed and lived happily until she had passed on. It was absolutely a new eye opener for me on love i mean. Love isnt supposed to always be happy or great all the time. Its supposed to break your heart at times in order to get back on the right track.

His return was unfortunate timing (and Donna sadly didn't know about it until the first Mamma Mia!). Had he gotten back to Kalokairi a day sooner or a day later he would have most likely gotten the chance to at least talk to Donna again.

That would have most likely not stopped Sam and Donna from falling in love (can't exactly help something like that), but at least all cards would have been on the table. I personally seriously wonder what kind of relationship Sam had with Lorraine. They were engaged, but she wasn't with him on his trip. Neither was he (as far as we know) taking a trip with friends. Donna is the only one he seems to spend time with there and it doesn't exactly take them long to fall for each other to a degree that those feelings are still there after 20 years of heartbreak and no contact.
