    I agree completly. If I had been around when people where taking from the wild I would have protested, but now that they are in captivity and have all been born there they are happy! So we should support them being taken care of well.

    Yup, we certainly do! I believe there are currently 87 Southern Residents right now and somewhere around 250 Northern Residents (I don't know the exact number). Of course there's a give or take of a few whales for each since there is a period of the year when we don't see any orcas at all (so who knows how the numbers change then) and since you rarely find orca carcasses it takes a little while to confirm a death (they go by how long it is not seen with it's pod).

    They have basic instincts that tell them how things should be to an extent. Even that young, without having lived in the wild, they have the instinct to swim great distances at speed, and they can't. Despite having not been in the wild, they know they communicate through sound, and the sound in the tank must be almost deafening to them because of how sensitive their ears are and how it reverberates. Just because they didn't live in the wild doesn't mean they can't tell that something's missing.

    It certainly is, that's why those particular groups of orcas are protected by the endangered species act. I'm not technically involved with orcas, not as of yet anyway. I've been rather obsessed since early toddlerhood though and I'm currently in university studying to become a researcher specializing in orcas. I just spend a great deal of my free time learning about them is all.

    @WillTheDiscusGuy The average lifespan of a dolphin ranges from about 17 years to about 25 years, with no significant difference between dolphins in the wild and in captivity. Females tend to live longer than males, and are the only dolphins known to stay alive more than 50 years. One female at the Dolphin Research Center in Grass Key, Florida is in her early 50s as of 2008 though it is very rare for any to reach that age.

    @FMAluver14 Oops, sorry, I let myself slip. Yes, you are correct that it was outlawed in the US. Pacific orcas weren´t caught anymore, so they took them from Iceland and Japan. Have you watched the videos I refered to? I just want you to understand that not all the orcas in captivity were rescued. To be honest, none of them were. The only rescued orcas are Pascuala (don't know how to spell it) and Morgan. Pascuala is dead now, and Morgan is in the Netherlands.

    @moledragonokay first of all nakai was born at sea world along with most of their orcas.sea world hasnt bought a animal from the wild in a very long time.its actually illegal in the US to take marine animals from the wild unless they are injured and are planned to be put back.next the orcas get fed no matter what they arent forced to do a show or anything if they dont want too and honestly the whales like doing this stuff because it keeps them stimulated.and they have 7 huge tanks not just one.

    @gally50 Of course they're cute in the wild too. But, like most people, the only place I'm going to be able to see them is places like SeaWorld, at least until I'm old enough to see them in the wild, anyway. I know the wild is better, but I just think that it is possible for them to be happy in captivity, too.

    @PacificOrcas Of course they bond with their trainers. They spend 3 years with them before they get into the water, and do you really think that they would allow them in their pool if they weren't comfortable with it? And it's not only food, they give them love, care, enrichment e.g. kelp, and everything they need. They trust them.

    @PacificOrcas And you think that they would just forget about their trainers, who they have been with and trusted all their lives, forget about their pod at SeaWorld and their babies there, and swim off and live happily ever after? I think not. They are used to being hand-fed, and used to their daily interactions. It would not be as simple as you make it out to be. Possible, yes, but risky, expensive and it would take a very long time. They would miss their families at SeaWorld, too.

    @PacificOrcas They were captured 30 years ago, or more. They have kids with them and a pod, whether it's their natural one or not. I actually think that Tilly should be released as he is just so massive (and possibly dangerous) and Lolita at least needs a tank about 4 times the size of the one she has now. Releasing Katina would be a bad idea as she has a newborn calf and a 4 year old with her too.

  • @missnoodles996

    @omerzoref Simple. The shows aren't for entertainment at all, so do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Putting them in a pool however massive and just leaving them there is cruelty, so training and shows enrich their routine and keeps them learning. The seem to like performing! There are about 4 shows a day and never at the same times twice, like the whales routine, they change daily to stop them getting bored.

    @gally50 I am a fan of whales and dolphins in general, wild or captive. Yes, they have more freedom in the wild but you do realize that a majority of the whales and dolphins (heck even sea turtles!) at SeaWorld or any other marine park are either BORN in captivity (which means they CANNOT be released into the wild) or taken in because they were injured. So no, we are not being selfish we are protecting them from an almost certain death. Ever read what happened to Keiko (Free Willy) after we set

    @PacificOrcas They can't be working with them every second, of course not. Orcas in the wild CAN live to 90 years, this is a maximum. Like some humans CAN live to 100, but some die aged 60. Think of Lolita, she's already 40 years old and in a tiny tank, and Katina is around 34. And all the whales apart from Kalina (no results yet) who have died this year had a cause of death not related to captivity, so you can't say that their deaths mean they are not taken care of.

    AGAINST WHALES IN CAPTIVITY

  • @PacificOrcas
    @PacificOrcas13 жыл бұрын

    @missnoodles996 Actually, it is impossible to keep an orca alive and well in captivity for their full lifespan, so I would say they are not well taken care of if they die in their 20's when they can live to be 90.

  • @PacificOrcas
    @PacificOrcas13 жыл бұрын

    @missnoodles996 Well, yes, releasing Katina now would be dangerous for her and her calf. But in 10 years or so, it would be completely safe. Orcas and other cetaceans have excellent memory. They can remember something that happened to them for over 75 years. So all the wild-caught orcas do remember their families, and they miss them. Family is the most inportant thing in an orca's life. If the wild caught orcas saw their families, they would be extatic and forget about humans very fast

    According to the standard phylogenetic tree, whales are known to be the descendants of terrestrial mammals that had hindlimbs. There are many cases where whales have been found with rudimentary atavistic hindlimbs in the wild. Notably Kyoquot station, Vancouver island 1919 case . For super books about nature & science try, ' The greatest show on earth ' & ' Unweaving the rainbow ' by scientist Richard Dawkins, also try PZ Meyers, Talkorigins

    @FMAluver14 The first captured killer whale was captured by accident. Then they caught a female orca to keep him company, Shamu. She was brought to Seaworld later. Now my dear, do you really believe that all the killer whales that ever lived in captivity were injured and rescued? No. What I said, NOWADAYS they don't capture orcas anymore. So, I did my research and I went to Seaworld. No problems there.

    @PacificOrcas I know there isn't. Of course there would be no place better, especially for the older whales, than the ocean. But in the last few decades our ability to care for them has started to get better, and all I'M saying is that captivity needn't mean they are unhappy or badly looked after. Agreed?
