Naim Audio Supernait 3 Integrated Amplifier Review (Take 2, Ep:13)

This Take 2 episode features the Naim Audio Supernait 3 integrated amplifier, which Roger Kanno reviewed on SoundStage! Hi-Fi on September 1, 2020. Designed to be more of a purist integrated amp than many are today, the Supernait 3 is priced at $4990 in the United States, is equipped with a moving-magnet phono stage, and has rated power output of 80Wpc in 8 ohms of 130Wpc into 4 ohms. If that doesn't sound like much power - wait until you listen to it drive most speakers.
In his review, Roger called the Supernait 3 a “revelation” and also wrote: “I never thought I’d enjoy an all-analog integrated amplifier as much as I did this one. . . . It sounded fabulous, and I now understand why Naim has such an avid following.” Read the full review here: www.soundstagehifi.com/index....
So now that you know what Roger thought, watch this find video to see learn how the Supernait 3 performed in Jay Lee’s system. What he says might surprise you - and might have you clamoring to hear what makes the Supernait 3 special.

Really great review Jay. I own a Supernait II and it's an amazing integrated. After watching your very informative review of the SN III I was considering buying one. But my satisfaction with my SN II is so high I just don't think I need to look at a newer model yet. I think I may go with a power supply upgrade at some point because I'm a firm believer that you always benefit greatly from a higher quality power supply. I like this aspect of the Naim line....that you can upgrade incrementally instead of having to buy a whole new amplifier.

I have Supernait 3. Im 100% satisfied. It powers obscure speakers in the US anyway, Lu Kang SP230. This amp reproduces the attack of horns or drums like a live performance, and even a quartet of singers stands out from each other easily. Poinciana by The Four Freshman sounds like it was made yesterday with perfect timbre and sense of space.

Hey Jay...great job...really like your new solo format...much more focused, concise and quickly conclusive. I'm a vintage Linn LK guy. Nonetheless, I have always loved Naim given their similiarities, not to mention their storied historical partnership, before subsequent fierce competitiveness over the years. Several dealers sell both for a reason. I have recommended Naim to several friends, especially those seeking one box solutions, who bought and love it for life. What's not to love about the Super Nait, XS or 5si? Keep up the great work while you continue your all important engineering education. Cheers!

I have naim equipment old enough to be Jay's grandparents! Lol. Got separates in 82. People knock naim for their price but in my opinion have it wrong, it's great value and has always competed with components costing twice as much in my opinion. It would be great if you all read the article in the link and actually get a listen to naim equipment before slamming it. Enjoy music with whatever gear you have! Peace

"People knock naim for their price" I like the lower-end stuff, but in an industry that's littered with overpriced, boutique garbage, drenched in a helping of snake oil, you've got to admit, Naim have dipped their toes in with some higher end gear ... but no more than the rest of them. But as Earl Geddas said; kzread.info/dash/bejne/fmh2z5NrY8axcbA.html - 9:00 "I'm and Electronics minimalist ... the speakers are the key ... speakers and rooms are the key to sound systems, not the electronics!"

Your point about it being completely transparent is absolutely spot on. I've got my Supernait 3 hooked up to a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 500 floorstanders which are very resolving, and combined with my DAC (Schiit Bifrost 2), any issues with the mixing or mastering are blindingly obvious. Anything sub-par recording wise sounds really bad, but the other side of the sword is that anything that sounds good sounds absolutely fucking incredible through this system.

I bought the Nait XS3 in June, very happy with it and my dealer who also sells Hegel. I really wanted the Super Nait 3 but couldn't get it approved by Mrs. Capital Committee Chairman... Next move is speakers, I know that is somewhat backwards in most people's eyes but my speakers are less than two years old and my Amp was a 1983 Denon PMA 750. Again the wife couldn't understand replacing "new" speakers and even the 37 year old amp since it still worked. Had to start someplace... Dynaudio Evoke 30's are what I am eying. Very happy with Naim.

I am more than happy that naim still continious to build this beautifull pcs of music. for me it is a perfect amp without any compromising. and I am so convenced this amp has no dac build in. I couldn't agree more with your review. I am living with the SN3 three months now & I have to say that this amp really rocks, really badass piece of equipment. I mostly listen to electronic music & the punch of the amp is amazing. I paired it with the Naim Ovator s-600 & it drives them flawlessly, without much of an effort. For those who leave negative comments about the Naim gear just remember two basic rules: 1.Synergy between components. You can't blame an amp if the speaker tend to be bright or boomy 2.Speaker placement. If you consider yourself an "audiophile" you MUST position your speakers the right way & experiment even more to find the "sweet spot". If someone follows these rules with the Naim gear, then he will definitely fall in love with it.

Supernait 1 was my first amp, and I still feel a pang of regret for selling that beautiful piece. It brought so much joy and warmth to my listening experience. I moved on to an Accuphase, but it left me disappointed. Now, I've switched to an all-in-one solution with the NAD M10. It's convenient, but I know deep down that if the NAD ever fails, I'll go back to the Supernait. That amp was unparalleled, giving me countless hours of relaxation and joy, even at low volumes. The rhythm and style of the classic Naim are simply unbeatable, and you can find them second-hand in superb condition. Plus, it pairs perfectly with my British Spendor D7.2. I don't understand the fascination with tube amps. Every time I had the chance to listen to them, I felt they offered less control, more distortion, and were overpriced. I also don't get where the idea comes from that they're difficult to drive speakers with. In my 30m² room, even with several speakers, I barely hit the 12 o'clock mark on the volume regulator. The Supernait had everything I needed and more, and it remains unmatched in my heart.

I personally own the budget Naim Nait 5si with NACA A5 speaker cables but hate the decoupled ac power cord to reduce vibration, I don't use my upgrade power cord from Naim, instead use a stiff power cord from P.S. Audio which works well, my speakers are budget Elac and KEF which sizzle with Naim and my digital front end is an Arcam Ir Dac with Kimber Silver Streak. It took over a year to truly break in my Naim amp to the point its now very smooth sounding and very deep and spacious! I could only imagine what the Supernait 3 sounds like? Thanks again!

When the lights went on everybody in that room agreed that Hegel had a much better dark or black area . The instruments came to life the distance between them the musicality wow as I said Naim amps play great but the h 390 is a graet player. There is the 590 and so on and some Hegel mono blocks that have almost no match.have all three of the amps mantioned above. Maybe add a bmc at some point and a pathos in my collection. I use it with Dynaudio S40s and I'd say the combo makes music sound dynamic, fast & punchy..2 × 150W in 8 Ohms and 2 x 300W in 4 Ohms and though specs isn't everything the Amp is known to drive difficult loads well just like Naim. Why is it that none of you (includes Thomas & Sean the great) talk about Primare and try to get your hands on one and experience it. It has a very elegant design and oozes quality to top if off.

Ignored is a strong word that implies that they do it on purpose. They don't review whatever they want whenever they want. A company must be take an interest in their work and offer them their gear. Why don't you send an email to Primare and ask them politely?

@@calaf_725 Edited my post not cause I thought it would come across as offensive but cause I thought it could do with some re-wording. I'm a regular on their channel and I appreciate their time, effort and honest reviews. I'll email Primare and see if I can make that happen however the way I see it - it appears rather strange if none of them ever happened to see, hear or experience any of the Primare amps in their years of seeing and playin around with loads and loads of audio gear to have an impression. I didn't think of it as you'll only see it in your lifetime if the audio company gives it to you for review. You can even see it in demos, at the dealers, at a friends place, maybe borrow one from a friend, etc. etc. I heard a Naim + Dynaudio excite & focus combo at Adelphi mall when I was working and living in Singapore a couple of years back so my comparisons with Naim might not be up to the mark cause I'm going by memory. Rega Elicit-R is another amp that had amazing slam and is stuck in my mind since I heard it at a distributor's home 2 years back. I was damn close to buying one but didn't cause the guy didn't have a new boxed piece at the time and so I put off my purchase for another day and ended up buying a Hegel H80 for my KEF R300s and eventually the Primare i35 for Dyn S40s. Myryad (MXI2080 I think) was another gr8 amp - punchy and that slam - was freakin nice driving KEF R300s, LS50s and R700s that I wanted to buy it but the chap didn't have a new one and was trying to sell his demo piece which I politely declined.

Naim neutral sound ? Not my experience at all ! I had nap150 + nac122 and the sound was tense. Good for 1 hour demo in a shop but my satisfaction in the long term went down and i sold it. My new amp was.. hegel h300 ! I prefered the sound of the hegel. A lot of power but not in your face. More relaxed. I recommend not to buy naim on specs but listen with your ears. It's special and you may like it. Or not. Jf

Not enough power for the price, it cant handle 2 ohms loads as rivals like Hegel h390 no streaming or dac either, witch the Hegel has, denon pma 2500ne for half the price is even more high current, and Hegel H190 can be bought for a lot less, and its also more powerful

Neutral? Naim has probably one of the most contrived sounds of any mainstream amplifier. Limited bandwidth, limited channel separation, high output impedance and verging on instability at high frequencies. If people like it, that's all well and good, but it certainly is not neutral. As an audio engineer once said to me, "If Naim is right, then every other amplifier is wrong"

I have a Rega Elex R and got the NAIM X3 and didn’t like it at all. This comes from someone who loves pace and rhythm. It was within seconds I didn’t like it. Was too tight and didn’t allow the instruments to breathe. Constricted them. I couldn’t hear the entire bow of a violin. I couldn’t hear a wide tone of a drum. Didn’t like it at all. Cheers
