In the 70s and 80s there were way less distractions, no cellphones, no internet, tv broadcasts went of the air at 12pm so music was what we did for fun and you spent enough time to perfect your craft. Black and white people were more talented back then because that's all you did, all day every day. There are very few today who will take the time to become true masters of anything because there is just so many other things to eat into our time.

I don't remember how I heard this but I used to go see these guys and I think it was one of their roadies who told me, because they are Albinos they couldn't play outside so their parents got them instruments for their birthdays and holidays. And boy, can they play. Johnny played with BB

I saw so many concerts in the 70s - Led Zeppelin to Edgar Winter, and many in between. I married in 1981 had my kids and divorced in 1991. I picked up going to concerts again, but I always look for music that has real talent. My son took me to see Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Edgar Winter in 2017 for my 62nd birthday. Yep, I raised my kids on great music!

Johnny played at Woodstock in 1969. His younger Brother Edgar could play just about every instrument and made instruments out of everything.😊❤

The bass player is Tommy Shannon who went on to join Double Trouble and play with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

...And the drummer: Bobby Caldwell [NOT to be confused with the singer-songwriter: Bobby Caldwell, best-recognized for his R&B/Soul single: "What You Won't Do For Love" - TOTALLY different people, but born in the same year!], who later became the drummer for: CAPTAIN BEYOND and ARMAGEDDON! (Not NEARLY as big a profile as: Double Trouble! No! ...but: as skilled and nearly as important! 😉😛). 🤘🤘

@@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra Actually, in this video the drummer is Uncle John Turner, who played drums with Johnny Winter from 1968 to Spring 1970 when he disbanded the trio and formed Johnny Winter And with Randy Z on drums, Rick Derringer on guitar, and Randy Jo Hobbs on bass. When that group started to tour, Randy Z was replaced with Bobby Caldwell.

They are white and they are also albino's. Their eyes are pinkish. As kids growing up in Texas they couldn't go outside to play with other kids because of their fair skin and their eyes are very light sensitive. Their father who was a musician and played several instruments taught them to play.

You should hear David Lee Roth's band cover this classic by: John D. Loudermilk [a well-known & well-respected Country/Pop song-writer (and artist, as well)]. Loudermilk wrote this circa ...I think in: 1959 (but might've been '58 ...or '60🤷). He had success with it, but not as much as other artists would, later-on! Lou Rawls, also, recorded a great version of "Tobacco Road" (which, surprisingly, he, also, did not find commercial success with! -although it became a staple in his live sets!]. I believe Rawls recorded it in '63. Edgar Winter started out playing with his brother, Johnny (although he later achieved greater public notice with his own bands [The Edgar Winter Band ("Frankenstein", "Free Ride", et al.) & Edgar Winter's White Trash]), but later broke away, achieving greater public notice with his own band/bands. Johnny Winter recorded "Tobacco Road" and released it in 1968 or 1969 and Edgar released a version on his 1970 solo debut. I am pretty confident in saying that: Johnny Winter's version is the most well-known and well-respected, overall (🤷). In 1986, when David Lee Roth was cut free of Van Halen, his new band cut a blistering version of "Tobacco Road" for THEIR debut album: Eat 'em And Smile, which, very much, deserve its own listen! This version, though (again) is the source of the song's, primary, recognition and fame. 👍👍 A Blues/Country-Western classic.

Try Edgar Winter's band, 'White Trash', with Rick Derringer and the great Jerry LaCroix. Specifically the live recorded album, 'Roadwork'. Johnny makes an appearance on it too. 😉

The white musicians honored them and brought them back to the stages they deserved . Isn’t time to acknowledge there are stiffs in every culture. Great Musicianship transcends Melatonin .My mom born 1915 introduced me to Louis Armstrong,Ray Charles , Ella Fitzgerald all the jazz greats to many to say . We were dirt broke but we had the music, that my darling is living the Blues ❤️

Personally, always had that blue-eyed soul! Born in 63, first song I remember singing was from Charlie Pride. My parents had good taste in music. The Platters, lots of vocal groups, older sister inspired me to play keys, 2 older brothers with So many different influences! Love you brother! Peace

This song was also done by Rare Earth in the 60s on their Get Ready album. Get Ready the whole 1st side of the album anout 30 minutes long and all instruments have a solo. The drum solo is one of the best. No one has ever redacted to it.

Actually no one stole anything. Both Johnny and SRV play in the same league (Texas Blues) but different styles and influences. While Stevie was heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Albert King and a lil T-Bone Walker. Johnny was way more puristic when it comes to blues and more traditional. He used finger pickin. His influence was the old Delta Blues like Robert Johnson and Son House but also Chicago Blues like Muddy Waters and Texas Blues like Lightnin Hopkins and of course Chuck Berry's Rock 'n' Roll. Both are great guitarists anywayz 😊

Mugs you got that right. White people wouldn't have a thing in the world of rock and roll without the black man's blues. There are several forms of blues. The Winter brothers were both blind from albinism. Couldn't see color but sure knew good take you to church music.

@@neillenet291 Yes, there are many kinds of blindness. Total blindness would also be included in the legally blind club for sure. Is one with color blindness legally blind? I just don't know. This is where the law and the diagnoses get blurry for me. Can you help educate me?

Johnny, Edgar and Rick Derringer are a world unto themselves. Johnny's album Still Alive And Well is one of the best blues/rock albums ever made.

There’s still a lot of extremely talented musicians out there. Back in the day we really didn’t care about race just talent, we would share are playing talents with whoever and we’re influenced by many I’d listen to Led Zep , Bad Co, Montrose and the Temptations, Tower of Power or Earth Wind n Fire. Separating everything and everybody by races, pretty much a newer thing for a lot of us

Unfortunately music shifted away from rock , blues , soul in the 90s especially when Rap and Hip Hop became so prevalent in the music industry. Back in the day it wasn't unusual for singers to also play at least one instrument. Different times but I'm happy that the younger generation is finally discovering the fabulous music from the 60s & 70s . And there are still white & black musical artists performing the blues / rock . Check out the fantastic Joe Bonnarassa, guitar player/ singer. Johnny Winter was a Texas Blues Man who once got on stage with BB King at a black Juke Joint in the 60s Johnny was unknown at the time and he was the only white man in the place. He ask if he could sit in with BB , at first BB was not sure but not wanting to appear racist he said ok. When the song was over BB turned to Johnny and said do you want to play another. Yeah it must have been some night.

Saw Edar about 15 years ago, still amazing!

On the BB King comment, to be honest, I don't think BB King ever played at more than a fraction of Johnny Winter's level. He wrote some good songs and was a decent singer, but I personally always thought he was always overrated as a guitar player, but just my personal opinion from having seen him play on TV. Even I could play a lot of his lead solo's, which is a bad sign, because I'm a fourth-rate player! But you're right, I'm sure both of these guys listened to and were heavily influenced by a whole range of black artists - blues players like Howlin wolf, and Led Belly, as well as black R&B and jazz players. To my ears, it's always been the black jazz players who were super, super talented as musicians, more than the blues players. The guitar blues players had soul and expression especially as singers, but were not usually all that proficient as players IMO, people like Johnny Winter took a lot of their riffs, modified and super-charged them and played them much faster and better. But the black jazz players?, holy smokes, serious, serious talent and skill there. Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Bird, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and so many others - amazing. I think Edgar listened to those cats, and the skating he does in this song is more jazz than blues I think. The natural talent with the Winter brothers is impressive though, especially with Edgar, to be able to be a knock-em-dead virtuoso keyboard player, AND a virtuoso sax player, and an amazing singer too?? And in your mid-20's? As you said, come on now!

He and Johnny grew up in south east Beaumont Texas ,,what else can you say

Everybody has got soul. These guys were influenced by the great black musicians of the time. Then Rap happened and the focus was less on playing instruments and singing. The focus was on the beat and rhymes. Things changed. Change is constant and inevitable. And cool.

Both Edgar and Johnny were indeed Albino and could not be in the sun for more than ten minutes or so. They are from Texas too. Johnny was one of the greatest Blues guitarists in the world. Jimi Hendrix Jammed with him one time, in a New York Lounge for about 15 minutes in the late 60s. Someone had a tape recorder, but no video. Two of the greatest together.

I'm almost positive that Johnny Winters band was Double Trouble before they joined Stevie. I saw Johnny at Rowan university in New Jersey,probably like 2002. He was in a wheelchair, and he was still destroying the guitar. Very underrated blues guitarist.

Always fun to watch someone discover Edgar! :-) I'm sure you'll get lots of requests for his band doing Frankenstein live; be sure to react to the video at kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmyaj7ObXcXdnLg.html. There are others out there, but this is the cream-of-the-crop performance. (Side note: Edgar put together the first version of the song when he was in Johnny's band; even played it at the same venue as the Tobacco Road set you just watched.) The album version went to #1, but Edgar always said Frankenstein is a visual song, so the live version is a must. And by the way, that bass player on Tobacco Road went on to play in Double Trouble with Stevie Ray.

They are straight out of the Texas blues scene. Gospel , soal and a large part of the blues.

The Winter brothers…wow,they were amazing.Texas Bluesmen throughout.The same thing that happened to all great music…it got replaced by Beyoncé and Taylor Swift type fluff.Blues is still played but few artists get recognition like they used too.

Saw a bunch of great bands back then. So glad I got to see Johnny live in the early 80's at a small club. Wish I had seen Duane Allman but he died when I was young. There's a band Arc Angels that ended up forming with SRV's rhythm section. Not sure if they're still gigging but they have some good feel.

This is Edgar Winter playing with his brother Johnny and Johnny's band. Uncle John Turner on drums and Tommy Shannon on bass. This was long before Tommy was part of Stevie Raye Vaughan's band Double Trouble. You see how young Tommy is. Tommy's been doing it a long time. Their inspiration comes from Texas bluesmen and God. From the church. Your right they were around one of the Kings. You picked the wrong one though. It was Albert King who Johnny loved.

Both Winter brothers were way talented. In 1988 Johnny became the first non-African American inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Edgar Winter is a top-notch multi-instrumentalist. He makes his home in Connecticut. Yes. Albinism is a genetic disorder, but doesn't always pass, directly. [can skip generations]. Albinism and Vitiligo are related, but not the same (Albinism affects the entire body and is present from birth. Vitiligo happens after birth and only affects the body (skin) in "patches" (not in totality.).).

You're right- White musicians do indeed owe a great debt to influential Black artists. That said, I think you would be completely blown away by "Dying to Live" (and I for one would love to see that reaction). This brings back memories!

Music is an example of how we cross bridges. No cultural appropriation. Just something that makes everyone feel good. We figured that out in the 60’s. But feel good doesn’t sell like feel bad does, so we get pounded with feel bad. For a short time we were all going in the right direction, but something changed. That’s too bad….

Our generation was cast aside when the Disco scene came to town. The sappy crappy stuff took over since then. That's when Hollywood teamed up with the Music Industry. Now we have cover songs and auto tune.
