Nagra are BEAUTIFUL MACHINES!!!!......my grandfather had one,he was a shortwave radio operator. He went nuts and gave it to some guy passing by on the street. SERIOUSLY.

Thanks for posting this. I have always been curious about the workings of these machines. A few years ago, I saw a documentary about the audio archiving department of the US Library Of Congress. They use these machines for playback of very old tapes because they say they are very gentle with tape.

Seblington - The reason your IV-S machine did not fast forward was not because your batteries were flat. 'Twas because it only runs in fast forward in Playback / Speaker mode, not Playback Line mode. You had it in Playback Line mode. Thanks for a great video!

Love the sounds of the steam engines, especially the stationary ones, would love to own one of those but they are two high maintenance, Nagra were cheap last September but looks as if they have gone back up again.

Thanks for the comments, you are right, the fast forward will only work in speaker mode though the batteries where flat in this machine, it would play but when you switch it to the speaker mode, it would give a distorted pulse output so I couldn't demonstrate that, if you put it into fast mode with speaker, it would not do anything.

Cheers! the recorders are expensive but worth the money, the IV-S I use but not all that often, I am hoping to buy a SNST soon too.

You would think but no, the smaller the heads, the more they pick up background hiss, a modded Studer C37 in the UK managed to push the boundaries by offering 20Hz - 44KHz with a S to N or 109dB witch is better than CD, the machine ran 1 inch wide tape in stereo at an unusual 13 inches a second. The machine was re designed by Tim Deparavicini, said to be one of the leading designers in valve reproduction.

The same with the IV and the III but the batteries are very flat in this video on the IV-S, if I had plugged it into the mains then the machine would have functioned better.

The fast forward mode only works when it’s in loudspeaker playback.

I use to know some one who rented these to studios as props. Would always urk me to see movie magic add sound to an otherwise speakerless device..

Hi can you tell me how headphones connection for Nagra III works? Is it one bananna plug for + and one for - to feed a mono headphone? thanks

i know that these are irreplaceable, but i'm looking for either a r-t-r or digital recorder up to the sound quality standards of these machines. would anybody have any recommendations? i'd like to start doing field recording.

The pinch roller on my IV-S doesn’t disengage the way you demonstrate here. Can you advise on why the little tooth that should push it back in stop might not be activating as it transitions from stop to play. The pinch roller is always engaged even in stop.

The main rotary switch activates an arm mounted on the top section, and this arm moves the little arm pushing the pinch roller assembly slightly away from the capstan. Sometimes the arm/roller activated by the switch becomes disengaged when the recorder is opened. If you open the top, you will se the arm immediately, and usually you can just put the arm in place in its "fork" holding it.

@@larsdela5906 it worked!! A little fussy to adjust as the arm had fallen out. It may have once had a screw to hold the other end, but is now just held on by tension. In any case it seems to work nicely now. Grateful for you tip! I’m on FB or gmail. Drop a line if you wanna connect.

You can find a fully-functional Nagra 4.2 reel to reel full track mono recorder on e-bay for 450$!.

I have a Nagra which I purchased, at an auction years ago, for £25. Unfortunately, when I got it home I realised that batteries had run inside !!!! Is this correctable ? I remember working on a production,a while ago, when a Nagra was dropped into the sea (salty water). The Nagra was swiftly immersed in fresh water for a few hours and then blow dried with a hair drier!!! As New !! I recall the same happening with a Fostex DAT.....................F****d ! Say no more
