Anupama asked the questions about women in Telugu cinema so politely prefacing it with her admiration for the industry. I wish it was answered with more thought instead of a defensive brushing off that the lyrics when literally translated are crass. The article Anupama was referring to was written by a native Hydrabadi. I am sure the journalist was not writing such an article based on English subtitles of Telugu songs. The songs aside, we all know the reason so many north Indian actresses make it big in Telugu industry without knowing the language is because their roles are limited to song and dance. It is changing with actresses like Sai Pallavi looking for meatier roles but these roles are rare. I hope the question atleast makes them think post this interview and introspect a little.

Kinda disagree about the heroines part. The most successful actress who are remembered for their craft such as anushka, nitya menen, sai pallavi etc are not your traditional bombay heroine as they. The amount of actresses we have had from malyalam from nitya, priyanka, priyamani, madonna etc in the last decade is incredible. Anushka, pooja hegde and rashmika are A listers in telugu from karnataka. Sam, shruti hassan, trisha and nayantara from kollywood made it big and are big. The only true north indians who did make it big were kajal and taapsee but then they have merit as well. The biggest heroines of the last 15 years have been from different places which is great.

@@tarunreddy2031 There are plenty of north indian actresses still - Rakulpreet, Rashi Khanna, Hansika, Avika Gor. Even many south indian actresses are used for Songs and dance only. Even in the most recent Pushpa, Rashmika was brown faced and had a relatively insignificant role.

The other point you mentioned is a problem throughout india not just telugu. Its still male superstars that are doing massive event films. If anything it even exists in Hollywood, all the big franchises biggest earners are based around their male superstars. Its a global shift that needs to happen.

Ignoring the meaningful roles of the acresses in small or medium budget movies in the last 14 yrs.... Films of directors like Praveen Sattaru, Tarun Bhaskar, Indraganti Mohankrishna, Shekhar Kammula, Krish etc.... And expecting meatier roles in big budget mass commercial masala movies is like going to Italian restaurant and ordering Dum biryani.... This Amupama looks for 'The great Indian Kitchen' vibes in every movie....

Hindi cinema is more sexist and malayalam cinema has also been sexist in a subtle way, in the sense that no star or actors supposed the sexual assault by a male star on bhavana, and films of mammoty and mohanlal where they play mass roles have always had women being seen as a sexual object. And in films like aptgatikam, kasaba, etc you have this quite explicit,

Everything should be viewed keeping the atmosphere and milieu around the characters.... If a male actor is playing the role of Politician or university professor giving speeches on women rights but still going behind a heroine half his age who isn't interested in him, that will be problematic.... Telugu movie songs unless proven otherwise have these ingredients 1.heroine mostly non Telugu, doesn't understand telugu atleast for few years , doesn't understand lines given to her is exploited by giving lines which will make any decent person cringe 2.most heroes are fully clothed and most heroines are clad in the skimpiest clithes in songs 3. Most heroes are happy with self praising, bragging about themselves songs atleast 1 or 2 4.1 raunchy number mixed with double meaning lines , talking about their family,s virility, maculinity etc 5. Songs mostly dominated by rythm,beat and less meaning in to the lines.. only .. Tune matters.. Harsh ,bitter truth in most films...

Very disappointed with Nagarjuna’s take on sexism and Telugu films portrayal of women. Bangarraju seems to be a crasser attempt at his EVV, Raghavendra era movies. He’s justifying his love for those movies. His language in Bangarraju is so offensive to women. I want him to break down Bangarraju to Anupama and other women. Chay seems to be a kid forced into working with his father. I don’t think even Chay watches these Bangarraju type of movies. Nag might think single theater movies will elevate their stardom but his sons don’t suit these movies. They will be successful when they do work they enjoy and connect with. Nag brushing sexism as “things getting lost in translation” is BS.

Hear it from me I am a telugite. The lyrics of some Telugu songs , the storyline of those movies are horrific. If someday had a leg fetish like allu Arjun in avpl I would have been creeped out to the max level. The portrayal of woman even in movies like pushpa etc is terrible and it's high time leading actors like these stop defending that nonsense.

@@daridram5975 happy to see someone echoing my thoughts on this. I always feel uncomfortable listening to those lyrics. Old movies were more balanced compared to the new trend..the trend of alpha male heroes with bimbette heroines. Wonder when this trend will change. The roles and dialogues of the female leads are cringe worthy and I wonder what kind of impact this will create on young minds.

These fc interviews less about cinema more about political correctness and woke bullshit and always try to ape the west.

I think the issue of songs being sexist isn't exclusive to Telugu cinema. Numerous Hindi moves have hit songs that are extremely sexist and demeaning to women, danced to by top Bollywood actresses. Anupama should have acknowledged this as well.

Anupama beware of film companion south editor baradwaj rangan, he wants to make it only tamil/malayalam based channel. We are expecting telugu actors roundtable and telugu directors roundtable soon. The FCS guys announced telugu interns but they reportedly don't respond to the mails. Telugu cinema should be represented fairly well, please anupama take this as a alarm. Rangan just wants to promote tamil and malayalam content

@Chachu P it's subjective, all industries produce shit like marakkar and kunjeldo in malayalam and bad remakes of telugu movies in kannada. Naming a channel as south, should include fair amount of all industrial content. If you look at rangan he didn't do a deep focus episode for a single telugu movie, shockingly for great movies like cinema bandi, Skylab and raja raja chora.

Without little writing it will not work I mean logic doesn’t exist in everything especially movies of single theatres mainly because they want to see a lead acting and going in a high against opposite force whether it is villain or anything You can’t say shit movies for Hollywood movies like die hard or many movies which exists in Hollywood they were meant for it People watched it Even in Hollywood major concept based movies only have limited collections that is fact It is mindset I watched people in usa where I came live now Bangladesh ,nepali , Pakistani , some Arab , South American countries Guyana ,japan to many watched know Indian actors now a days allu Arjun I almost watch all kinds of movies around world We simply can’t ignore fact Some movies we literally enjoy in theatre as including a don or anykind We should have all kinds of movies A auto wala or any person in middle class wants to enjoy the movie rather thinking what is this and what is that It is common Not all movies which have fighting or masala songs will not work if you know or not They were certain things only work Take care samples of recent masala movies in hindi or regional movies
