The otherwise bustling district, Dimapur in Nagaland wore a deserted look on April 26 following the indefinite shutterdown call by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). All shops and business establishments in the district remained closed.
Dimapur is also known as the state's commercial hub and according to the figures from the DCCI, the shutterdown call is affecting more than 30,000 shops and business establishments.
The district trade body, DCCI, in a press statement on April 22, called for the indefinite shutter down starting April 26 citing “unabated multiple taxation, intimidation, and summons” by Naga Political Groups. The trade body also stated that the shutdown would continue until the grievances of the business community are addressed.
The DCCI also had a three-hour-long closed-door meeting on April 24 which was convened by the Deputy Commissioner. Held at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, representatives from various administrative and civil bodies, trade and business associations, and civil society organizations took part in the meeting.
Speaking to the press after the meeting on Wednesday, Shikuto Sema, Vice President of DCCI, confirmed the Chamber’s decision to proceed with the indefinite shutter down. Sema also mentioned that they have the support of various Civil Society Organizations, and the business community and trade bodies including the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and the Business Association of Nagas (BAN).
Omega Yepthomi, Convenor of the Public Grievances Cell of DCCI, had stated that the shutdown would continue until the state government assures the safety of traders and the business community.

Tribal people need to wake up. We are too dependent on outsiders from low skill to high skill jobs. Whether be it motor mechanic, plumper, manual jobs, barber, etc. Grab the market. When will our people realize it. We are yet to understand dignity of labor. We have to be self reliant. We have to adapt to this ever-changing world or we will disappear and there would be no one to tell our stories. 😢
