Nagaland: Hundreds rally against alleged murder of leader by Naga wrestlers

Hundreds of men and women from the Western Angami area in Nagaland rallied in Kohima to protest the alleged killing of a local leader, Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou, by two Naga wrestlers.
The Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO) organised the rally, which began at Paramedical junction and included a short program at Old MLA junction before proceeding to the Deputy Commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum.
The incident, reported to Kohima Police on May 18, involved a quinquagenarian hospitalised at a private hospital following a physical assault after a vehicular traffic scuffle. Miasalhou succumbed to his injuries the next morning.
Police have registered a criminal case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and arrested two individuals, Neizosetuo Kire (24) and Khrietsonyü Whuorie (25), both known Naga wrestlers from Kohima Village.
Protesters, donning Angami traditional attire, held banners and placards that read “We condemn murder”, “respect elders”, “Justice delayed is justice denied”, “wrestlers or killers”, “all roads are not yours”, “Am I next?”, and more.
During an interaction with the media after the memorandum was submitted to the DC, Khrielievi Chüsi, General Secretary of the Mezomia Mechü Kehou (MMK) informed that the deceased was a political assistant to the deputy commissioner of Kohima, and also the president of the MKK, a citizens' forum of Mezoma village under Kohima district.
The memorandum submitted by WAYO demanded the arrest of the two accused under all relevant sections of the law and be given exemplary punishment. The memo also stated that no bail should be given to them under any circumstances, warning that if any person or group tries to bail them out, they will be held responsible for any untoward consequences.
Chüsi informed that the DC assured cooperation and legal action against the culprits.
Earlier, during the gathering, WAYO President, Neitolie Khrietuo Peseyie, said that the protest was held to show their resentment against the “murder” of a tall leader by two Naga wrestlers. He said that the incident had tainted the reputation of Naga wrestling, a sport cherished by the Angami Nagas.
Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) President, Kepelhoutuo Chüsi, said that the community is not against any family, clan, or village. However, the peaceful rally was held to voice their sorrow that such an inhuman act should not be repeated.
In a civilised society, he said that issues should be settled through dialogue and not by physically assaulting one another. He said that the Angami community which hosts other Naga communities in the state capital, must be hospitable.
Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) president Metekhrielie Mejura, Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) president Seyieneilhou Keyho, Northern Angami Youth Organisation
(NAYO) Vice President Kevizelie Pienyü, Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) president Kesosul Christopher Ltu, and MMK general secretary Khrielievi Chüsi addressed the gathering.
The speakers sought justice and demanded that law enforcement agencies punish the accused as per relevant sections of the law.
Meanwhile, a criminal case under sections 323/325/352/302 of the Indian Penal Code was registered by the police following which the two accused were arrested on Sunday.
The Kohima Village Council (KVC) and the Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) also condemned the attack on the deceased, and his son by the two accused.
The village bodies demanded legal action against the perpetrators, urging that the law be applied rigorously to ensure justice.

@@tzuyu3473it is not a matter of % of people playing and actively participating in it But rather the historical and cultural significance behind it. Just because the current and upcoming generation are less interested doesn't mean it is insignificant. Moreover calling it naga wrestling is a way to cement its deep roots in naga history and heritage, a unique sport originating from the nagas. But hey forget all that today's world is much more interested in k-pop and basketba and football so why do we need to preserve our cultural heritage right? Our youths are not even interested anymore.

Just because you're into wrestling, doesn't mean you can just go around using your strength on whoever you want. And seriously, taking the life of an elderly man? That's just totally wrong and a complete misuse of your physical abilities. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - there's no excuse that can make murder acceptable. Remember next time, if you feel like being aggressive, find a better outlet instead of resorting to violence.

This news really came as a surprise for me, being from dimapur where driving is no easy task as 90% of the drivers drive with the ‘Motto: Moi eh first javo-laki’. Added to the taunting heat and humidity, followed by the free gift of the yellow-three-wheeler which comes from north-south-east-west-left-right-middle-anywhere-wherever-possible. So, kinda understandable if it had happened in dimapur because all of the said factors can cause the rush of blood to explode.( though by no means i encourage the murder or the violence that took place, but i guess you get what i am saying right #heat of the moment, men being men). So, from personal experience the news really came as a big surprise because whenever i go for some certain works to kohima or visit family members. I often come across very patient car drivers, who would literally wait patiently as i turn my car around and what not. I often use to acknowledge to my friends and family about the people of kohima and their sense of car driving ethics. So my point is, to have this incident occur from a traffic tussle is indeed really shocking. (P.s: #IMPO) #RIP for the departed soul. And as per the law that is laid out #Justice should be served. P.s: People this indeed is a sensitive case so don’t drag in the tribal tagline, every house has rotten apples. #Let’s condemn the ones who got their hands dirty, not the whole house.

The sons regret, the scar of this incident, etc will always remain as a demon in his heart. I truely feel sympathatic to the departed souls son. Praying that he overcome this obstical. Hope the culprit be punished severely for their action. Hope this incident be an example to all those goons that nothing goes unpunished. If ever the party brings in backer the backer should also be jailed for supporting the culprits. Hope the victims family gets justice and may the departed rest in peace.

Yes, while it's true that every story has two sides, one cannot simply ignore the fact that two cocky and conceited youth resorted to physical assault, resulting to death. It should not be a day or two blown out issue but one where justice will see and speak for itself. May the departed soul rest in peace. #justicedelayedisjusticedenied
