Naga Darshana At Shree Dattatreya Durgambika Devasthana By Sri.Vasudeva Acharya
There are two distinct rituals performed in reverence to the snake. They are, Aashleshabali and Nagamandala. Of these, Nagamandala is longer and colourful than Aashleshabali. Nagamandala depicts the divine union of male and female snakes. It is generally performed by two priests. The first priest, called as patri inhales the areca flower and becomes the male snake. The second priest, called as Nagakannika or the female snake dances and sings around an elaborate serpent design drawn with natural colours on the sacred ground. The ritual is supplemented by playing an hour glass shaped instrument called as Dakke. The drawings in five different colours on the sacred ground are white (white mud), red (mix of lime powder and turmeric powder), green (green leaves powder), yellow (turmeric powder) and black (roasted and powdered paddy husk). Aashleshabali is similar nature to the after death rituals performed for the humans as per the Hindu tradition.
The ritual, centered around the serpent design, continues till early in the morning. A similar kind of ritual is found in Kerala and is known as Sarpam Thullal and Sarpam Kali. All communities of Tulu Nadu revere snakes.

This is a type of worshiping methodology for the snake god in the Tulunadu region of Karnataka. Snake god is most revered in Tulunadu and snake worship is an Integral part of tuluva culture. By the way that is not grass.. it's the flowers of Areca nut(Supari) tree locally called as Pingara or Hingara

Here in Mangalore we strongly believe in Serpent god as the land we are living was Nagaloka which the snakes sacrificed for the mankind upon Parushuramas request. I have seen people getting benefited after performing some specific Poojas. I have even seen some Muslim families doing the specified Pooja. But don't go blindly about it. Consult a good astrologer and then identify the root cause of the Dosha. Later you can perform the specified pooja at Shri Kukke Subrahmanya kshetra .

It might be business... It might not be related to religion. But it's part of our culture. Today we don't know the significance of these rituals because we have adopted modernity. But these are age old traditions.. these are part of our history. Why can't you see it as a folk art form ? What is not business in this world? Our education has become business.. access to water has become business... Taking care of our parents has become business... There is business in everything buddy.. that should not be a reason to abandon our traditions

Free food is served to all the devotees present in this ritual. Buy the way these rituals happen is Tulunadu region of Karnataka where is lowest poverty rate and it's a prosperous land
