NA cams upgrade on the Volvo 850, S70, V70 T5 engine. All of the NA cams from '92 TO '98 work - VOTD

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There has been a long standing debate that the NA cams from the '93 vehicles are different/better for the T5 mod than the cams from '94 - '98. I was able to measure 4 sets at one time. A pair from '93, '94, '96 and '98. All 4 appear to be the same size. All 4 measured between 40.59 - 40.64 mm.
Bottom line, I don't believe it matters if you get NA cams from a '93 or '97 B5254S engine. All of them between 1993 - 1998 should work the same.

Love your videos thanks for making them . I think the NA cams have a higher lift duration than the turbo cams so if you swap NA cams into a T5,it should give a slight raise in output . But from experience it's marginal . All the best from the UK Robert.

Late to this mod but love your videos Robert…given me enough confidence that I bought a 97’ 850r wagon to learn to wrench. Pulled an na intake manifold and cams from a 98’ v70 na car. Just wanted to confirm 98 cams are ok for this swap?

There is a debate that has been going on for a long time... There are people wondering if a Non - turbo glt could be into a turbo glt? I think there if these people wants to turbo a non-turbo car needs to modify a few parts and upgrade the ECU, injectors, manifolds and piping. Possibly cams as well. But, to clerify. I don't think cams will make a difference in these vehicles since they look the same. Think it's possible?

In Sweden the saying is that for t5 cam upgrade you shuld get the early 850 2.5-20v cam from 91 or possible early 92. Roumor say the earlest cams where the hardest. But after rough idle complains from owners volvo put tamer cams for later cars staring 92 model year. The cams that you have have should differ between 94-95 model don't know how, but the reason is that Volvo ditched the vvis intake for cost and reliability reasons for the 95 model year. To compensate for the low to midrange torque loss when removing the vvis they redesigned the cams.

+nilsutt Oh, the '93 & '94 cams here have the same part number. The '95 - '98 share the same part number. But I could not see the difference with the caliper.

I wouldn't change the cams... without more research. In german forums the consens is you lose power all around except top end and a tune should be used. Imo that makes sense - Volvo did design them like that for a reason.

+hausm3ister I put them in two cars now. If adjusted/timed properly, they are great all around, tune or no tune.

I am not saying you are wrong. But I do not think it is as easy as a bit more lift = more power. first google hit: www.hotrod.com/articles/hrdp-1011-cams-for-turbocharged-engines/ There is a lot more to it. What I am saying is that without a before and after comparison it is wrong to talk about an upgrade. I don't have the experience to contradict you, but I know what I do not know ;) If you have some data on it please share it :)

Sometimes the engine on my volvo V70 stops a couple of times and I have to restart it a couple of times before it finaly runs without stopping, it mainly happens when it is wet of damp outside but not every time. so what could be the problem ?

Worth? Supply and demand. It takes about an hour to remove them and they cost $40 at many junkyards. I'd ask $100 for a pair based on that.
