N&W 382: The Virginia Creeper (2017)

Norfolk & Western #382, a 4-8-0 "Mollie" type locomotive, was built in 1906 by the Richmond Locomotive Works. A workhorse of the branch lines, the engine saw work over its lengthily lifetime notably on the Abingdon Branch of the Norfolk & Western Railway's system, and a notable photography subject for the great O. Winston Link. Sadly the engine was dismantled in 1957, but her sister engine #475 escaped the scrapper's torch. Today, #475 is dressed up as her long lost sister for Lerro Photography's "Virginia Creeper" charter, the third event of its kind, at the Strasburg Railroad. Recreating scenes commonly seen on the Abingdon Branch, #382 races along the countryside with a mixed freight consist, just as she would over 60 years ago! Now please enjoy this special video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions in conjunction with Lerro Photography!
This video was filmed on November 6th, 2017.

O. Winston link would have loved this and be proud they are recreating what he preserved for us to see in the future. I wish he could have seen this.
That whistle doh! This deserves to be heard

4:37 I can't believe 475 wore PRR 7002/6083's whistle!!!! How did the museum of Pennsylvania agree to this?!??!?!

I mean, it's not like 7002 is going anywhere anytime soon. Plus 7002s whistle was probably the closest they had to a Virginia Creeper whistle

7002s whistle? Her whistle should be on the 7002 at the RR museum. Same with 1223. Maybe that whistle you heard belongs to #39.

Wow. A lot of work went into the staging of those scenes!
I just biked all 40 miles of the creeper trail last week. It was beautiful
I love the sound of that bearing slop.
Great video!
What's the story behind that smokestack? Never seen one with a "fluted" end like that. Is it some type of spark arrestor?
Very well done!
Keep the good work up
I love the way it flew through groffs!
Nice valve sound!
Excellent!
Bruh I’ve been here about 3 times and haven’t seen 475 yet darn
Is it just me or does 475 look way better as 382? I think Strasburg RR should leave her like this!

Well, Strasburg used to have on their operating engines was a Yellow, Rectangular pinstripe That went around the tender & cab #.
Wow - where did they find the outside braced wooden box cars?
What kind of whistle does she have in this video?
Brilliant video! How often ae photo sessions like this held?
Great stuff! This is the look 475 should always have. And the whistle too! What happened to the shop built 3 chime for this trip? Wasn't available?
Hey chad i like it man
6:58 in the train station
that sounds like MILW 261 at 2:34 although I know it is a PRR 6 chime or a 3 chime.
Yes
Watching this I realized one huge problem with the Strasburg trying to realistically modifying # 475 to resemble # 382 when she ran on the N&W's Abingdon Branch. The 475's tender is from a USRA Mountain Class K-2 with four wheel trucks. The tender on 382 when she ran on the Abingdon Branch in the mid 1950's was a larger tender riding on six wheel trucks that was from an early articulated either Class Z or Y-2.

I wouldn’t say it’s much of a problem
Not the engine I was looking for, but a delight nevertheless. Like the period touches with car, wagon and passengers.
Why does that thing have two whistles???
I could be wrong but isn’t the 2nd 3 chime from a PRR or LIRR steamer???

"Epic!"
wow that's 382's actual whistle? How did Strasburg acquire this?
@charonsferryold

Sadly no, it's actually a replica the Strasburg shop crew made after analyzing some old recordings of 382's whistle. However I think the real whistle may still be preserved in Roanoke.
So, if I'm getting this straight, the 475 is Wearing 382's Original whistle as Her Primary, & PRR 7002's As Her Secondary????
That opening shot is very picturesque. Another great video! Also, what whistle is that?

@@dolothedolphin there are two whistles on the engine in this video. The deeper one is PRR 7002's 3 chime, but the higher one, to my knowledge, is N&W 382's original whistle. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've heard.
I know that other whistle on 475 besides the homemade shopbuilt 3 chime whistle, it's LIRR 39's PRR 3 Chime whistle.

Peepers Lerro will be proud of this video
Is the reason why 475 has masqueraded as 382 a few times in the past few years and was this video filmed around the second time 475 was dressed as 382 since 2010 I believe so? And is it true she'll be masquerading as 382 again once 611 visits this fall and I hope she'll be heading there by steam. I mean if she was able to go all the way to Ohio in 1994 under her own power then I bet she can do it all the way to Strasburg Pennsylvania
