Also marriages were is the correct usage since marriage is singular and 'marriages' is plural, also compelled is the correct spelling, also i think you missed to add "the" somewhere inbetween the lines, hope now it makes sense..

Indian princely states history together with British Victorian era is a relatively modern one( only 163 years history). I would consider 'ancient', if we were talking about historical periods Before Christ(B.C.) or just right after year Zero(after Christ's death). Even the birth of U.S.A(European colonization of the Americas in the post- Colombian era and Australia in the 1760/70's is considered modern in the modern history. [I am neither talking about the indigenous Native American dated back15, 000 BC, nor about the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492]. If we want to talk about ancient colonies and language influences then Egyptian, Greek, Byzantine or other colonies of those time could be considered as such. Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome have had contaminated their culture and language from West to East. Ancient Greek Empire had had reached even Northern Indian regions, not to mention about Central Asia. But the relatively modern Ottoman Empire(1299 - 1922) never tried to invade India during the rule of the Mughals because they lacked the means to do so. Yet, it had had conquered many regions of Central Asia, Europe and Middle East, although, it couldn't completely conquer Persia. So, coming back to Indian Princely states history, it should be considered modern. Princely states, also called a native state, feudatory state or Indian state (for those states on the subcontinent), was a vassal state under a local or indigenous or regional ruler in a subsidiary alliance with the East India Company and after 1858(only 163 years of history) with the British Crown. Before the Partition of India in 1947, about 584 princely states, also called "native states", existed in India, which were not fully and formally part of British India.
