This myth is as old as ONI itself, and IIRC it was originally caused because there was a very, very, very early patch where digging it up had actually caused the o2 to be reduced; the devs saw players leaving Oxylite tiles all over their bases and acting scared of digging them and didn't like it. Klei has no problems with min-maxing, but not in the early game where new players can end up punished. I think there was a debate between making all tiles drop 100% mass and reducing generated mass, or just fixing Oxylite somehow. Obviously, they chose to fix Oxylite. On a similar note, this was well before vents were added, so at the time the only permanently sustainable way to create oxygen was to get a whole colony of vomiting dupes, keep them as miserable as possible and let it offgass polluted oxygen. Fun times.

Wasn't it also originally one step further, where not only did the mined version have less mass _(and thus originally less oxygen)_ but that the _mined_ version released it a lot faster, leading to running out of generation faster?

I think the reason the undug one was 1388.9 vs 1389 is there was one less free square in that box. So, it all reached 1389 then filled in the 1 square gap left from the oxylite. Thanks for the video!

I remember playing when it did this… Probably a good plan that they fixed it, as it’s an early game resource.
Kudos to committing to the scientific method and making sure both experiments where identical. But I saw an Echo with a magnifying glass focusing the sun into the bit of debris oxylite, so you're caught 😛

oh hey, i asked for this video. thank you for making it, and for taking it a step further. there's a niche to be filled in the ONI community for mythbusting videos where there's video evidence of testing in the game. between updates, bugs, misinformation, and word-of-mouth, game communities have a tendency to operate off outdated/wrong information for years before someone bothers to check, and i've gotten to the point where i don't believe heresay in gaming communities without evidence. and having a quick video to refer to means it can be shared in the community during discussions. for inspiration, i recommend checking out Wand of Sparking, a terraria channel that has made a whole series of testing weird ideas about game mechanics (/playlist?list=PLTdvCLw0EMqt_wjaTewHUIzAv3TuIQedP). they ask for ideas at the end of each video and get a whole load of suggestions for the next video. maybe something to test next time: when, if at all, does damage/repair to a building destroy the materials? and is it possible to cheese the materials being lost?

I'm not surprised this myth exists. You can see half the mass get lost when mining. You'd have to do self experimentation however, to notice that the efficiency of mass to oxygen gets changed, or be digging through the oldest of patch notes for when it was made to do that XD

I don't like the mine it, because I like the watch it skrink, and use it as a timer to tell when i need to start up the algae diffuser again. But i already knew this, hilarious that it's still debated, i remember that the KZread channel "Grind This Game" did a similar Mythbyster like this, many KZread's have, yet the myth persists, it's almost like an enigma, or urban legend, lol. Good video!
I have literally never dug up oxylite because I thought it would be wasted. Thank you so much for disproving the myth.
You can do it like "ONI busters" which makes sense because in japanese "鬼"(oni, おに) means demon, and demons can also be very powerful ghosts, which aligns with "ghost busters" name
Thank you for busting that myth because now I know I can get them out of my way without losing the oxygen. :-)
Very informative

Nicely done. I too thought 50% would disappear on mining. I'm just not an asshole commenter - I usually assume people who make content for a channel have a better strategy than myself in their favourite game.
This format is great. Keep the uploads coming!
I use the "Better Miner" mod because I always thought if I dig a 1 cubic foot hole in the dirt, I should get 1 cubic foot pile of dirt, not half that amount. What this means, that I never stopped to test, is with that mod running, I get twice the oxygen by digging it up. Cool! Thanks!

I use a mod that changes how much a tile gives based on the digging skill of the dupe; unskilled dupes still give the 50%, then it scales up to 100% for the highest possible dupe skill, capped at 100%. It means in early game where you see oxylite you'll almost never get more than maybe 60% mass, but even in late game unless you outright tell non-diggers to never dig, you'll still lose a lot of mass from digging commands. I think some of my dupes do as low as 56% while my best are right around 90%. Feels more balanced, and gives me reason to put thought into my digging and who I let do it, rather than just whoever gets to it.

4:26 It's not a rounding error. When Oxilite tile depleted itself it created a tile of vacuum, lowering the average amount of oxygen per tile.
@nickdumas2495
Жыл бұрын
That shouldn't matter. And obviously wouldn't make a difference of 0.1, rather than 3% or so. The total grams of O2 should be the same (50000), in a box that is 36 tiles in size. Rounding error makes sense since it is floating point values and a lot of divisions by many different scaling factors over a long time.
an interesting result. so much better to mine it out and get a longer lasting source of fresh air. forget if dupes can freely move chunks around or not, would be nice if they could
@gimmethegepgun
Жыл бұрын
It doesn't change how long your air will last. It's the same amount of oxygen (well, slightly more, due to a rounding error) so you'll still run out in the same amount of time. And yes, dupes can move chunks of oxylite around. It's in the Consumable Ore section of the storage bin.

Something cool that you could have shown (sorry if already told before) was that the very few first seconds of mining the oxylite, the mass lost is actually turned to gas so you should have seen a difference right at the start.. Could you do a video explaining the vacuum of space? I opened the area around my colony up to the vacuum of space, expecting it to vacuum it out for me, but it hasn't done much after 100 or so cycles. Is that simply because of how my gas layers sit? Or does the vacuum of space not pull the gasses out?
@ShadowManceri
Жыл бұрын
Vacuum doesn't pull, not even in real life. Gasses move into the vacuum. In oni this happens quite slowly.
@slidexztv9727
Жыл бұрын
Make sure to have at least three tiles in width exposed to the vacuum, the more width exposed to vacuum the faster it will rise into space the gas will travel from high to low pressures so opening gas pockets to allow the diffusion will facilitate the evacuation of gasses. It can take a thousand cycles to vacuum a large map of all gasses.
@EchoRidgeGaming
Жыл бұрын
Both @ShadowManceri and @slidexztv9727 have good points. This is why if I want to vacuum out an area, I used a gas pump.
@IamCoalfoot
Жыл бұрын
@@EchoRidgeGaming You also need to make sure there's no _source_ of gas; I've left areas exposed to space for hundreds of cycles before and there was still co2 filling it. I was confused until I realized that dupes wearing oxygen masks still breathe out co2 into whatever environment they're in, but dupes holding their breath don't. Environment suits fix that up nicely, though.
thats an interesting result. it does mean that if you are low on oxygen, you still don't want to mine oxylite. because it ofgasses faster unmined. mining the oxylite would slow down production, so even though the efficiency is the same, you could have dupes asphyxiating with perfectly good oxylite on the ground. I think that a lot of the people saying it wastes oxygen are mistaking lower oxygen offgassing speed for lower overall efficiency, which is an understandable mistake.
I think the series should be called "No Research Selected"

MNI myths not included there's your series name. Please do ranching/critter myths next.
I believe this myth actually comes from the game itself. I think the log entry mentions that digging up the oxylite produces less oxygen than letting it dissipate. Guess they forgot to change it?
I don't think it was a rounding error. The Oxylite tile itself was taking up space that became a vacuum briefly when it destroyed itself, so you actually would lose a tiny bit of oxygen as it fills the vacuum? Or because of the lack of drywall, the oxylite tile's box just naturally lost some oxygen by the time the mined oxylite decayed.

With the full miner yield mod it will be better. Though I really wish they made the game give you 100% of the mass instead of 50%. This is especially the case with ice and water, melting the ice biome might be better than digging it out but either way you get plenty of ice and you can print 4 Megagrams (4000 kg) ice if you choose it from the print pod care packages.
