Mystery suspension clunk, Nissan Pathfinder 2013+

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Both 2013+ pathfinders that I work on regularly make this noise, and I thought I would share what I found. Not a strut, tie rod, end link, ball joint, strut mount..... Check out the video.
EDIT: For my friends replacing their own bushings at home- a lot of people asked for a video fix. The clearance is just too tight to have good video of this. Nissan was not very nice, and mounted the bar with mounting brackets on TOP of the subframe, unlike normal cars that have them mounted BELOW the subframe.... Therefore pointing the brackets and bolts, at the ground. Here is the fix in my words:
All you needed to do is put both front wheels in the air, you do not need to take them off. There is 2 bolts on each sway bar mount bracket - you need to use all the tools in your collection, like a low clearance 3/8" ratchet, 1/4" ratchet, and metric, offset wrenches or ratcheting wrenches (like from GearWrench). These will be KEY in getting those bolts out. The clearance between the heads of those bolts, and the steering rack is terrible - it's kind of a busted-knuckle type of job. By the way the front bolt hole on the bracket is slotted, so you could just take out the front bolt HALF way, and then the rear most bolt, all the way. Then, you'll be able to remove the mount rackets, and then the old bushings. Remember, before you reinstall new (hopefully Moog or anything besides Nissan) bushings, use a small amount of either bushing grease or a synthetic grease like Super Lube, on the inside of them before you fit them over the sway bar. IF you don't do this, the bar will squeak over bumps, for the next year or more.

I’ve had a popping sound that only happened when turning left when accelerating from a stop. Over about a year now it has slowly gotten worse. After ridiculous quotes I started a you tube search and went through all the common items…replace outer tie rods, sway bar links, and just did the CV axels this week. Still popping. Finally took it in and the mechanic called saying he thought it was the rear diff bushings 🤨. Glad I found this video. Replacing these tomorrow. Also worth mentioning all those parts I replaced were in terrible condition. Seems the suspension in these cars are junk.

Ok. I have a 2014 Pathfinder....and it has been clunking in the front really bad for a while now. A while back I changed the sway bar links....and no change to clunking. So....like he says in the video...must be the bushings. I tried to attempt changing these once before....but ended up backing out because it just looked too hard to do. Just not much room at all. But ....finally got tired of the clunking the other day and I rolled up my sleeves and attempted it. Jacked it up, pulled the tires off, and man did the sway bar move easily (not good). In total it took me about 2.5 hours to do both sides. I will say that the there is a tiny bit more room on the drivers side than the passenger side as far as getting the hard bolt out. What worked the best for me was a long flex-head ratchet, a short skinny extender (especially needed for the passenger side), and a lower profile 16mm socket. A 16mm wrench helps as well for the other bolt. After removing the bolts (the hard one not all the way out though) you will need a pry bar to help with moving the sway bar to get the old bushing out and the new one in. Make sure to put a little bit of lithium grease in the bushing before putting on. After i got the new ones installed and tightened up....the sway bar is super tight now. Took it out for a test drive......and that clunking is now gone. This is certainly the culprit people. Nissan quoted $430 labor plus parts. I bought the bushings from amazon for about $32. It can be done....but it does suck. Good luck folks!

Thank you. This just saved me $1500 that Nissan wanted to replace the shocks. I found sideways play but only at a particular loading of the suspension where it came loose. all other load positions it was tight and didn't 'thunk'. Now to figure out how to do the replacement. Hopefully they are split bushings as I cannot imaging having to remove the stabiliser bar to install the two bushings from one end.

Commenting from Nebraska on 10/3/22...I have 1996 nissan pathfinder SE. Granted its got almost 204,000 miles and runs actually fairly well. However, I think mine has the same problem. I hear a low constant rumble under my driver's seat on the left front area when I'm going over bumps at low speeds. I hear at higher highway speeds but it's not as noticeable. I don't have terrible play in the steering but I can feel some. Could this very be the same problem? With almost 204,000 miles, I'm not surprised some of my suspension is getting bad.

Hey John. Check a few things right away to get better miles per gallon back- intake air filter, tire pressure, make sure you aren't rolling on all terrain or snow tires. This black 2014 in the video averages 24 mpg. The sway bar mount bushing job is not a big job, but more of a pain in the butt job. The mount bolts are facing up, instead of a normal vehicle they usually face down towards the ground, and mount on the bottom of the subframe instead of on the top like your vehicle. Make sure when you do the job, the front of the vehicle is in the air, and NOT one side at a time. When both sides are in the air at once, you take the tension off the sway bar.

Usually a classic clunk sound is ball joints, but also dont forget about control arm bushings- BUT usually control arm bushings you will be able to feel in the brake pedal, when coming to a stop and pulling off from a stop because of the weight shifting forward and backward. If I were you, also go under the front fender while the car is on the ground, and with both hands try to rotate the spring- if you can, you have an issue with how it was assembled by who ever replaced the struts.

Yes you will. Since the rear should almost always be higher than the front, did you ever have someone replace the front struts before? Maybe they installed struts not made for the pathfinder, with shafts that are longer than factory. Or, someone replaced the springs in your car with the springs from another model Nissan. Springs/coils are what change the height of the car. When you have "bad" shocks, your front end will bounce over bumps and dips in the road- that shows you that only the springs are working, and the shocks or struts are blown.

Junior unfortunately this could be a lot of different things. When you think about it, you're saying right from a stop - so it's not taking real speed to make it happen; could be a bad half shaft, badly bent wheel, horribly warped rotors or a frozen caliper- when a caliper freezes it keeps pressure on the disc and overheats it, warping it. How many miles on your Pathfinder?

  • @MidknightMechanics

    @MidknightMechanics

    2 жыл бұрын

I'm sorry man I do not. But, all you needed to do is put both wheels in the air, you do not need to take them off. There is 2 bolts on each sway bar mount bracket - you need to use all the tools in your collection, like a low clearance 3/8" ratchet, 1/4" ratchet, and metric, ratcheting wrenches (like from Gearwrench). Then, you'll be able to remove the mount rackets, and the old bushings. Remember, before you reinstall new (hopefully Moog or anything besides nissan) bushings, use a small amount, of either bushing grease or a synthetic grease like Super Lube on the inside of them, before you fit them over the sway bar. IF you don't do this, the bar will squeak over bumps for the next year or more.

Is it common to feel the bumps in the road from the break pedal? I just starting driving a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and I can feel the bumps in the road through the breaks? Thx for your advice

That's tough Dave, that is not that uncommon to feel separations or bumps in the pedal, but if they seem significant, that would be old (dry) tires, or depending on your mileage, possibly your front struts. When the strut gets tired or worn out, only the spring is absorbing the bumps. That can lead to a bouncy ride up front and feeling every bump in the road through the brake pedal and usually through the steering wheel. This would be a quick test drive with a mechanic to figure out. How many miles on it Dave?

@@MidknightMechanics The car has about 104,000 and now that you said it could be the tires and that makes sense because it definitely needs tires. I do not feel anything in the steering wheel only the breaks and it's just kind of a reaction. Thx Broski!

@@MidknightMechanics how would you know if the struts need replacing? I was told my struts need replacing a while ago because my Pathfinder 2013 140,000 miles has for a while a year driving not as somooth like every bumb I can feel it.

My 2014 Pathfinder does this weird front end (left side it sounds like) clicking noise whenever I do the initial acceleration after being parked for a bit. Any idea what this could be?

I have a 2015 qx 60 and one day out of now where I have this grinding loud popping cracking noise and when I drive it feels like I'm dragging something. I put kt in reverse and it almost wanted to stop it was a real bad jerk So I take it to get checked they tell me I have a loose bearing but I've got a hole in my front differential so it's got no fluid. I travel for work I'm in this small town no one can fix it. I don't know anything about cars but I've got to get this truck moving. So I get some epoxy to cover the hole it's decent sized hole and after some busted up knuckles I figure out where to fill front differential and transfer case. Now once I do all of this the super loud dragging feeling is gone I feel like I just saved the world. Now at this point it's all trial and error with the epoxy and putting fluid in because

The epoxy is just slowing it down but the truck is working better but I have thatsound I hear in this video almost sounds like coffee is brewing. Now once I got fluid in it wouldn't be really loud and so I'm thinking I'm OK during this period minus the fact I don't have Full power like sometimes it wouldn't want to go past 2nd gear but I drove from New York to Maryland and back twice. Anyway so ghats been My process I've been driving all over ny. But yesterday the initial loud noise came back with like a popping noise no real power tried to do the fluid thing but nothing so I just parked it until I could figure it out

In my opinion, after having 2 customers with them and servicing them both for several years; Stay away- because of the CVT transmission issues I've seen them have, and they do not hold up in serious car accidents, they don't have sturdy sheet metal and crash protection. They try to compensate with airbags everywhere, since they are lighter weight than using a thicker steel structure. Otherwise, they do have good engines and fuel economy. I would go with a Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, instead.
