Mystery of the Ice Cream Villa (Yelnow Villa, Colworth, Beds) | S16E08 | Time Team
Stacks of high quality Roman remains have been found in a rural field near an ice cream research centre, including a huge collection of coins. It points to a high status building, possibly a villa. But it's far from any road, and geophysics doesn't come up with anything definite, apart from a large square ditch. Stewart identifies a potential Roman road, running right past the site. Though they are unable to find a substantial stone building, the outline of an Iron Age round house emerges, showing continuity of occupation over hundreds or thousands of years. Late on day three, evidence of a Roman structure emerges. They are joined by Roman coin specialist Philippa Walton, Ben Robinson from Peterborough City Council and Louise Revell from Southampton University.

The producers decided to get rid of Victor in favor of computer graphics. Mick Aston quit over the "dumbing down" of the series. Mick died of a broken heart less than a year later. Very sad on both accounts.
Victor had such a wonderful sense of humour. He would put members of the team in his drawings as characters from history and make you realise how ageless their faces are. And there was so much light in his drawings.

Seemingly, there was nothing creative that Victor couldn't do! He made a clay bust one episode. He made the mold for a time team coin in another. He illustrated about a hundred books. Sorely missed.

RIP Victor Ambrus. Thank you for inspiring many with your artwork (myself included), and helping to bring the past back to life. You will be greatly missed and I’m glad that Time Team can memorialise you just as you did with those in your works of art.
Rest in peace Victor. Your illustrations helped much in bringing the past to life.

😰. Victor....You will be sorely missed...Thank you for all that you gave and shared, bringing the past to life in the most observable ways possible, and your unending patience for details throughout, that we could have that spyglass and open window into others' lives, so long ago. I'll just bet you have more than a few thanking you for remembering them up there, but how dearly we appreciated you and your exquisite work as well. And how much we'll be missing your bonny, yet calm, countenance! Thank you for being you, and Godspeed friend.
Oh so sad. RIP Victor had an outstanding talent of looking at bits of rubble, stone, dirt, and listening to the comments of the team, to bring it all to life with his drawings. Awesome is not a strong enough word. Hopefully his drawings and any other artwork he did, find a permanent home, somewhere that everyone can enjoy his grand achievements.
Rest in Paradise, Mr. Ambrus. Thank you for sharing your gift of drawing with us all these years.

A true artist who will be sadly missed by one and all. You brought to life where ever Time Team Dug . RIP Victor
I will so miss him. While the team dug a site to bring it to light, Victor drew a site which brought it to life. You will be missed.
So sorry to hear of Victor's passing. He had a unique style, and every art piece he composed told a story that fit each TT episode perfectly. I always looked forward to seeing his finished art at the end of each episode. very inspiring. Will miss his exceptional talent. Thinking of his family and friends at this time.
So sorry to hear this news, Victor reminded me of why I became interested in history, my gran would buy me illustrated history books for Christmas which I adored as a kid, the pictures drew me in to read the text. He brought the archaeology to light in a way I still appreciate. Thanks Victor.
So sad to read of Victors passing. An amazing talent. Loved his work on Time Team. RIP Victor.
The beers for night 2 were clearly good!!
When Louise said "starting to sound like ritual", I like to think that wherever he was at the time, Francis somehow knew.
Victor's artistic vision delivered a spark to light our imagination - a legacy that will be passed from generation to generation, as precious as the finds. I shall miss his presence on the shows dearly.
Mr. Ambrus Thank you for everything.
This man was a great inspiration he literally put the archaeology and visual content on paper. His drawings will still inspire all

Get Phil half in the bag around a camp fire, and I'd bet you're in for some good stories.
Perhaps it was a Villa of a not so wealthy family. That is why it is located away from all the major roads. So they bouild it with mostly wood, wich is cheaper, instead of stones. Maybe it belong to a local family that lived in that area long before the romans arrived and the villa was their atempt to follow the fashion of the times...
RIP Victor and thanks for the many, many drawings

I love how the team interact with each other and the local archaeologists/local residents, there is a lot of banter and Micky taking, but there is a lot of respect for each other’s opinion and expertise, they really have got teamwork down to a fine art, and then you have Tony, the glue that holds it all together, except in this episode where none of the team seem to be able to make any sense of the site. Thanks for sharing sharing another excellent episode, TimeTeam is a programme that I could never get bored of, thanks again for all the hard work and making lockdown a bit more more tolerable. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴 P.S I wonder how long it took the team to fill in all those trenches, a lot longer than it took the archaeologists to dig so many trenches and pits?, I actually feel sorry for that team, or do the archeology team help them?.

Love Neil, but you can feel the lack of Mick or Francis on this dig. There was a certain gravitas they brought forged in years of experience.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired. I couldn't help but laugh, while rewatching it now, how much Mick would have told Tony off for forgetting the very first thing about archaeology - don't chase the building, decode what you find. Tony going on about the villa would have irritated Mick no end. Neil showed no end of patience logically placing the story of the site together and showed the deterministic qualities of a great archaeologist.

Victor inspired me as a child to draw... Its so sad to hear of his passing... But whether he knew it or not he was a great inspiration...
It doesn't end after the 3 days. If something Superior and important is found archaeologists keep working on that area. :-)
I find it quite interesting how on some Roman sites, they dig 6 inches and find things. In other fields, they have to dig 6 feet.
What's the mystery about the number of coins lost in that field? Kids get excited when they near an icecream factory! They loose the odd coin... 😁
By capturing the lives of our ancestors on paper Victor has immortalised his own legacy too.

This is Time Team and the archaeology is important as are those who are interpreting it. I would not normally have a bone to pick with the way Time Team is presented; but this had too much of Tony Robinsons piss taking, which on reflection spoilt this episode. It used to be more balanced when Mick Aston was explaining and a balance to Robinson, but in this episode there was no one to counter him and this needs addressing when the new venture comes to fruition.

Money. It was an expensive show to make (contributed to its cancellation). The 3-day limit keeps it in budget.
The only thing I don’t enjoy about this show is how easily frustrated and impatient Tony is. If I found even a single Roman coin, I’d be ecstatic. Let alone finding a whole villa. And here in the USA we have very few artifacts that are over a couple hundred years old. Finding 2000 year old archaeology is incredible.
