Tearing down the Pavilion was a grave mistake. The Strand has never felt the same since. It almost feels like a cemetery between 8th and 9th north. Just having it there was comforting. Now pulling into Myrtle off 501 really feels different when not being greeted by the backside of the Pavilion.
thank you...my hubby and I met in line for the Mind Scrambler....Memorial Day weekend, 1988. We'll have been married 25 yrs this Dec. Thank you Pavilion for bringing us together! You are missed!!
I worked there in 1989. was a french Young guy of 21 years old and met hurricane Hugo. one of my strongest memories. your vid is good.
WAS THERE THAT DAY... YOU COULD LITERALLY FEEL THE SADNESS HANGING IN THE AIR
This was a major loss to our lives. I still haven't gotten over the loss of such a great landmark that will forever live in our hearts and minds. I wish the video was longer and had more of the park in it. I wasn't smart enough to film the crap out of it before it perished. Myrtle Beach government needs to be ashamed of themselves for letting this landmark disappear. Such a shame...a part of me died along with it. The Queen song choice was perfect. I remember hanging out here back in 1985 during Hurricane BOB and many years after. 1984 was our first time at the Pavilion.

Kevin Thompson And they kind of suck
Went here since I was toddler. I'm 27 years old and still to this very day remain angry and sad that they tore this park down because "they had a better vision of condos and hotels" yet all that sits there is a stupid zipline. Time to face facts B&C, tearing this place down was the biggest mistake you ever made. This place is what brought Myrtle Beach to life especially at night now all we see is a vacant lot. It's very sad that my nephew won't get to experience the memories me, my brother, my sister, my cousins, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts all got to back in those days. So thanks B&C... I hope they remember you.
+toucheslapper Ugh I remember that was the highlight of myrtle beach. I remember when I was 11, my family would go to the pavilion every summer. When we hit the end of 501, all I saw was the rollercoaster. My mom always had a habit of parking near the backside of it,lol. We we got out, all you heard was screams and laughs. It was the best time of my childhood. Now when I go there, I see nothing...a got damn zipline....really myrtle beach? But I can say one thing, I'll never forget having a last chance to see the Pavilion during my last year of high school during a band trip in '05-06. I wish the new generation could have had the chance to experience what we did.

Phostings1 I can only remember the big pipe organ now. I was 2 when it was tore down, and I was actually there that day. I was too little to get on the rides, but I did see my family in the video. I love family kingdom, but I can just tell, that The Pavilion was better. Also, I'm starting my first season of marching band. this year too😄

Wanted to take my kids there never can they were 2 young then
Just made a grown man cry. I don't believe I ever missed a year from my dad bringing me as a child to me bringing mine. I was able to bring my first grand-daughter when she was four-months old 5 weeks before it closed. What an idiotic choice to tear it down. I can't believe the economy of downtime improved with a Zip Line and parking meters everywhere. What's there worth driving for?

I can relate. My dad took us every year during Sun Fun Festival week since the early 60s. A huge part of our childhood. And closing the air force base was nearly as bad as losing the Pavilion.
My childhood died a little in 2006!!! Whoever decided to get rid of this icon of joy made a huge mistake.
This is an amazing video. I cry when I see it. I think of the wonderful memories that I have of being a small child, having fun with my parents. Then, all of the fun my daughter and I had at the Pavilion. It's so sad to know it's gone. I am so lucky to have some wonderful videos made throughout my daughter's 11 years. We will never forget the Pavilion, and all of the magical memories it has given us.
I was actually there that day, just too little to be on the ride. But I did see my family in the video.
May our Children forgive us...

This video made my heart sink. I've been going to the Pavilion since I was a child in the 1980's. (Remember the original haunted house with the huge skeleton head and slow moving fingers??) I'm going back home to NC in 4 days and we're going to spend a weekend in Myrtle Beach - I will CRY when I look at the barren land that once was the Pavilion. Thank you for this memorable video.
Hard to believe the powers that be allowed the Pavilion to close. It was the heart and soul of Myrtle Beach. Now they have Myrtle Manor and Black Bike week - the most disgusting display of civil disobedience and depravity. Nice going, Myrtle Beach.

The Pavilion was the heartbeat of Myrtle Beach, other than the ocean itself. They should try their best to rebuild what they destroyed as closely as possible. It would be the best thing they could do for the area.
Great choice of background music. It brought back so many memories. We were lucky enough to be there closing year. My dad was from SC, so MB was our go to family vacation in the 70s and 80s. Then my brother and I started taking our own families in the 90s and on. We still go, but now we stay in Garden City since MB has just gone down hill. Thank you for sharing this.
Ugh, this is one of the saddest videos on the internet... I hope they salvaged Rainbow and Starship 3000 to use at carnivals or something because those were so iconic to the Pavilion. They could be immortalized in a museum for amusement parks (though idk how Rainbow would fit inside a building...maybe the seating section and the sun at the very least).
Oh my goodness! I didn't know they had closed it! Last time I was there in 2004. Had my first kiss there. Added many a wad of chewing gum to the log flume wall!!!
Too sad for me to get through to the end. The dumbest thing MB ever did was getting rid of The Pavilion.....sigh.
oh my gosh when i saw the part where they were tearing it down i started to cry! :(
I’ve watched vintage, nostalgic and tribute videos of roller coasters and amusement parks but this one always kills me on the inside
Great video guys. The slow part with the deconstruction about made me cry. Great song choice too, Queen rocks!
Great video guys!! Biggest fail in Myrtle Beach history. I moved down last year in 2013, so I missed it by a long shot but I remember sneaking in to the park with my Mom underneath one of the gates days before the construction started. R.I.P Pavillion.
Wow... Great camera work and editing. It was sad to watch but also warm to remember all the times I was there in the 70-80s.
the pavilion was so fun even though i was little i still remember the little airbrushed tatoos and the swing ride. that was one of the best places in myrtle beach and myrtle beach will never be the same again
@divinegrace01 Returned from MB 2 weeks ago and it was packed, and was somewhat hard to find an ocean view room for 3 nights. As lame as it sounds, my eyes teared up when we drove past the empty grassy lot that was the Pavilion. I went to Family Kingdom twice during my stay and it will just never compare. I had started going to the Pavilion in 1982 when I was 2 yrs old. I have pictures of me on the carousel, refusing to let go..I apparently rode all day. I'm with you - missing the old Myrtle.
The folks who owned it thought they could make more money closing it down and building condos. They were wrong.

ThemeParkSushi They didn't even build them. Just some stupid zip line, that I have always refused to go to
Sadly, this was the last weekend that the Pavillion was open. There were so many memories of not only my childhood, but the memories that I have with my daughter at this wonderful place. The only sad thing about growing older is living through the changes that our eyes see during our lifetime. Thank you for this video.
Alot fun that place was at Myrtle beach made vacation fun going to Pavilion
It's 2023 and I am still mad about this. My son was 2 when they tore it down. He never got to experience the shared joy and fun we did.

Same I was way too young to ride any of the big kid rides
I agree. I can't believe the Pavilion is gone. I spent a lot of time in there as a kid and also after I graduated from high school. And, it was also fun to ride past the Pavilion at night in the car and see it all lit up and beautiful!
this amusement park was my whold childhood. i went there every year that i went to myrtle beach and i loved it sooo much and now every summer when i go and see the ruins of this place it is SOOOO sad! i miss it sooo much!
now all they have is that stupid zipline

im i 14 years old and i would have to say that brought tears to my eyes. i was going on thoes rides since i was a young boy, the last time i went there they were taking apart the ride that i always went on. i cant believe that they are puting condos in there, i will never forget thoes times i will make a video(s) when i go in march 08, i go every year.
It is - "Who Wants to Live Forever," made famous from its usage in the first Highlander film. You can get it on the "Classic Queen" CD, which really should be required by law to own.
I know this sucks so hard. It’s depressing honestly. I have SO many memories. I don’t know who’s in charge, but it’s never too late to rebuild, right?

Great job with the video! You did some very good editing here. I remember going to the Pavillion twice, only when I was little. I haven't been since. Did not realize they had torn it down.
I remember taking my old wooden ticket box across the street to the Pavilion office every night when we closed
How can they tear down a place that, over the years has bought so many joy and sweet memories only to replace it with....nothing?
Wow! I can't believe it took over two years for someone to figure out exactly what we were trying to say with this video!! Good job! I thought the message was too subtle, but I guess I was wrong. (seriously, dude. Switch to decaf)
The Zipline their now always seems abandoned whenever I’m in South Carolina for vacation
The pavilion should be a historic place.
@NikkiDocherty74

It should have been protected as a historical place rather than torn down and demolished.
I was there the last day of the Myrtle beach pavilion. There was this sense of great sadness..it just permeated the whole area of the pavilion.
Oh the memories that park had for me.
Wow, what a really great video! Ahh, the memories. :-(
So sad, it was such a good and fun place to go, I miss it so much!!! RIP The Pavilion :'(
That was a very well put together video. Living here, I never got there much, but do share some good memories. The history there was great, but what bugged me is the hype they had over the new Rollercoaster "Hurricane: Category 5 ", in function for about 5 years I think, and its all gone now. Funny little side note, most of the parts not put in the Nostalgia Park at Broadway at the Beach or sold at auction, is stored behind Nascar Speedpark
Now that is a sad but enjoyable video. Closing just doesn't make any sense. The merry go round really got to me because although I outgrew it quickly, it seems to be the first ride I ever took at an amusement park anywhere. Gone, gone, gone....

I never outgrew the merry go round. I was still riding it when I was in my 50's. Sad to see this place go.
WOW i WAS JUST UP THERE IN 08 AND THEY STILL HAVENT DONE ANYTHING TO REPLACE THAT. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME THERE AND I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE LEFT IT THERE CAUSE I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO VISIT. I REALLY MISSED SOMETHING GREAT. PEOPLE OF MYRTLE BEACH MAKE THEM PUT ANOTHER PLACE LIKE THAT UP. IT'S A SWEET TOUCH TO MYRTLE BEACH. AND YOU GUY'S ARE THE BEST THERE THE PEOPLE ARE REALLY NICE!
If traveling back in time was a thing I would definitely go back when this was still open
this video made me cry myrtle beach is my hometown and the pavilion held some of my fondest memories and when they tore it down its like they tore down a piece of home
Wow this makes my heart ache
@mulchpuppy ..I lived in Myrtle Beach from 1995 until 2001, & it was a known fact even as far back as the late 1990's that the Pavilion's time was limited. I believe Burroughs & Chapin owned the land(& most of MB) & they were lookin at putting up condos & hotels was the talk back then. I haven't been in a few years so I haven't seen what they actually put there, other than the boardwalk, which I've seen on youtube. Myrtle Beach will NEVER be the same without the Pavilion!!
Thanks for making this video. It's really sad how it all disappears just like that for the sake of corporate greed that does nothing more but destroy the economy as opposed to helping it. In the process we lose our amusement, our joy of a certain place in the same area we love to vacation at. When we were trying to look for the Pavilion when we FINALLY had enough money to actually go to the beach for three days..seeing the empty lot...many other places like the Grand Prix gone too. So sad. :(
Everything sucks now. So many great memories gone. We are losing our innocence and becoming a bunch of dumb, lazy, boring idiots who would rather sit on our fat asses and play video games than have an actual experience. I'm glad I grew up in the 70s and had a chance to experience the classic American childhood.
It’s even more sad that pretty much the classics that were bought to Broadway at the Beach are gone
There will never be a place like this here in Myrtle Beach again if you don’t count Family Kingdom
this is cold blooded murder. smh ~
I grew up in Myrtle Beach what a great place when I was a kid now it's all about the money I guess sure miss that place sure miss the magic attic where I used to go dancing as a teenager
@ThemeParkSushi .....well that sux out loud!! Before I moved there in 1995, we started goin to Myrtle Beach in 1986 & we always stayed 4 blocks south of the Pavillion & walked to it. Never went to the Magic Kingdom.....just the Pavillion. LOVED the Rainbow ride.....lookin out over the ocean. Such a shame that GREED took away one of the BEST things about Myrtle Beach.
@CarnivalTragedy I actually came here looking for The Haunted Inn ride specifically. Now that you have returned from MBSC, how did you feel? I was there last summer, and it broke my heart. I was there 4th of July weekend and didn't see a single "No Vacancy" sign. Not one. On the busiest weekend of the year. The boardwalk and Pavillion area, once bumper to bumper with cars and a**hole to elbow with pedestrians, was almost desolate. I came here every year from 1978-1997. I miss old Myrtle!
I have great memories of the Pavillion, sad it is gone. 😪
I really hope we get something big like this park in South Carolina in the future
IF you visited Myrtle Beach, that was a huge part of the experience. We need to get a new Pavillion in it's place.
Mann... i went there when i was around 11 pavilion everything and now 14 yrs old we had a basketball tournament and all it was down there was all scrap and metal just big junk field it was sad but atleast i went to the pavilion for one time
When they torn this down MB hasn't been the same
since they got rid of this it has just gone down hill
Greed!!!!............So sad!
I hate it when I see that ANOTHER traditional family park closes down...and let me tell you I have seen and read about many of them. In addition to what Rodneywrc8 said about the changing times, the fact is that more and more people are staying home with their big screen TVs, playing on the internet, playing with their PS2s and Wii's. So less people go to parks and the cost to run them increases. The 'sue happy' U.S. society doesn't help either.
Ever since 2006 Myrtle Beach has sucked...and always will. Thanks for the memory.
i dont even know this park but it makes me cry
@Truckerfun01 oh i love the rainbow!!
My cousin almost fell out of the rainbow ride at 3:15. She was 12 and very skinny, wearing a slick jogger suit. My sister looked over and she had slid down to her shoulders in the seat and then was pulled back up by my oldest sister. then they rode it 4 more times XD
im just glad ive gotten 2 go there once but it is sad though i was little so could only ride the little ride any one who went there could love tht park
I can't believe people actually believe that the two events are related. The closing of the Pavilion was a business decision that had absolutely nothing to do with Hard Rock Park.
Miss that place
I was there this past summer and was at a time share presentation. They said they were part of the Pavillion being destroyed. They said that it was hardly used in it's last years and the crime rate rose, but if you talk to the "Real" people of Myrtle Beach, they said it didn't go down-hill untill they tore the Pavillion down. They just wanted to room so they could build their greedy condo's and crap, which they still haven't done, the lot is still empty!
Nicely done video, very sad. We drove from Canada to MB every March break as kids, then my brother and I brought our kids in 2002. Glad they got to see it before they tore it down. The reason for closing was economic (=too cold in the winter to run 12 months a year) so why did they open another park at Broadway at the Beach? Both sites (vacant Pavilion site and BATB) are owned by Burroughs & Chapin... now the new park closed too. MB gov. & investors could have stepped in to save the Pavilion
I was lucky enough to let my childern play there......like I did....What a Damn shame....no interest in going back...
I hate that only two pictures exist of this parks Top Spin ride and even zero videos
i didnt almost cry, i did cry, cuz i work on that bulivard, they should rename it from ocean bulivard to bulivard of broken dreams, cuz everytime i look down that street, all i see is this big empty space, and i feel an empty space in my heart R.I.P pavillion, july 5 around 6:30 to 7:00 pm, i will b standing in the middle of that open field were the pavilion used to be to remember the good times that the pavillion used to bring. if anyone cares to join me, i will be standing there for 5 miniutes
I stand corrected. Not living in Myrtle Beach, I was summarizing what I had been told. Your information sounds a lot more plausible to me, especially considering the fact that absolutely nothing has been done with the property (with the exception of that joke of a zipline).
thats so sad... you did a great job... *sniff*
The rainbow ride was all time favorite
I can't believe that the Pavilion did not sustain itself. It was probably that it didn't make enough money. They should have kept it where you had to buy tickets. All the good stuff has been torn down. MB Grand Prix, Pavilion, Pavilion Arcade, some of the arcades along the strip, Rock burger, and the list could go on forever. They can't even keep an airport running around here correctly.
caint wait to get down there and see that beautiful place CFOSSFADE calls home.
Mind Scrambler. I have a friend whose brother was killed in it in the 80s. He got thrown out of the seat and the ride operator didn't see it due to the darkness and as the seats spun around inside he was crushed to death. The owners of the Pavilion didn't even pay the family and the guys mother was a drunk and was too drunk to sue
If anybody knows me George Burr I go by rooster that grew up down there in the 80s get a hold of me I sure miss that down
For sure, made me real sad-feeling inside. With the Hurricane gone, it's like it was, well, somewhat when the CorkScrew sat there all of those years. Do some of you remember the CorkScrew?, it went upside down 2 times over the entrance. I rode it 30 times in a row one summer afternoon before sunset. After the 30th time, i was getting a bit nausiated from the 2 loops it had.
I live in Myrtle beach..born and raised..countless memories as a kid going with my family..to getting older and going with friends and doing a bunch of crazy shit!!!! NOW IT'S A ZIP LINE IN PLACE OF THE PAVILION MAKES NO SENSE...
they should have made it bigger instead of destroying myrtle beaches heart,,,, my parents are from here, their parents are from here and i am from here. If i would of been in control of this city,,, the pavilion would have stayed,, instead they are turning it into yankee central.... THE REAL MYRTLE BEACH R.I.P.
I grew up down there and it really hurts my heart that one of the death nails of the park was the "New Shiny" Hard Rock Park and then it died and became something else which is just as crappy and never really was developed into the correct replacement. Just gonna kinda stink when my Niece and Nephew grow up and they don't have something similar to go to.
@BigMattMoney Nope. Myrtle Beach Pavilion was on Ocean Blvd, right by the Ripley's Believe It or Not (if you go there now, it's nothing but a large empty lot with "No Trespassing" signs on the perimeter). Hard Rock / Freestyle Music Park is about seven minutes away on Hwy 501 right by Medieval Times and the old Waccamaw shops.
I’ll bet Myrtle Beach regrets that.

@DickieAnginson I remember that ride! I'm thinking the name of it was something like MindScrambler? Or was that the other dark ride they had there? I cannot remember. I am still so bummed about the Pavilion turning into a grassy field. Ugh. I wanna know what happened to the old facade to the Haunted Hotel back in the 80's. The one with the skeleton w/ the giant fingers that moved...
The whole Grand Strand area got caught up in dollars per square foot; very typical of today's time. They shut down amusements for skyscraper condo buildings, it's become places to stay and eat. They even shut down golf in the Golf Capital of the world. A nice beach ain't enough! The new park was a roads/travel nightmare! Reduce the tax burden for companies to bring in amusements inside the city and it will help pay their insurance. Bring back some Grand Strand fun! You too North Myrtle!
except in yankee country, they keep their historic old seaside amusement parks
That Hard Rock park was doomed from the start out there...they opened it up before it was complete and tried to charge like 70 bucks to get in. It is sad to go by there and see it sitting not running..I go by it five times a week. I go by the old Pavilion site many times and show my kid the pics and videos of what she has to miss out on because of GREED from B&C....They are taking over in Gatlinburg now too...Look also out at Myrtle Square Mall...perfect place for a Park to go in at.
Hey Dude It's the first time I've seen this vid!!! And I like my caf........
I love the pavillion so much... I knew when I kept my pavillion tokens they would be more found memories than the games I got shit out of.. LOL..
@DCRockerGuy ...they've got a few of the "kiddie rides" from the Pavillion at Broadway.....sadly, no Rainbow!!
