Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the myoneural junction (also called neuromuscular junction) and is characterized by varying degrees of weakness of voluntary muscles. It affects more women than men.
In most cases of myasthenia gravis, thymus gland is believed to be the site of production of autoantibodies. These antibodies bind to acetylcholine receptors on muscle endplate and make them unavailable to bind with acetylcholine resulting in weakened muscle contractions.
