Myanmar's Forgotten War Explained: The Military Coup, Revolution, NUG, Rohingya | 2023 Latest News

There’s a war going on right now that you've probably never heard of. The war in Myanmar has been referred to as 'The Forgotten War', which began in early 2021 as the military launched a coup and seized power.

The military claimed that Myanmar's 2020 elections had been rigged, something independent election monitors and experts have said is simply not true. A state of emergency was announced and General Min Aung Hlaing took control of the country. Politicians and critics of the military were jailed including the nation's leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The military in Myanmar has a long history of using violence to seize and maintain power. When Myanmar (Burma) gained its independence after more than a century of British rule it didn't take long for the military to step in and take control.
The military controlled all aspects of daily life and violently dealt with anything that it perceived as a threat. One of the most infamous examples of this came in 1988 with the 8888 uprising. The military responded with brutality, shooting live ammunition into protesters in the street.
Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as a leading voice of this pro-democracy movement & was placed under house arrest for 15 years. She continued to push for democratic change with her political party the NLD.
The military also targeted minority ethnic groups to the point of being accused of genocide. Myanmar is made up of a number of different ethnic groups the largest and most powerful being the Bamar who traditionally have dominated the military and positions of power. When Myanmar gained its independence the Panglong agreement promised a number of these minority groups autonomy and a potential pathway to independence. When the military seized power, burmanisation policies were introduced to suppress the culture, language and religion of minorities.
This oppression led to rising ethnic tensions which the military responded to by introducing even more brutal & extreme tactics, like the Four Cuts Policy. One of the military's bloodiest campaigns was in 2017 against the Rohingya people (considered by many in Myanmar as Bengalis from Bangladesh) who haven’t had access to citizenship rights since the 80s.
By the late 2000s the military announced it would be shifting to a more democratic system of government. However, the new constitution ensured the military would keep control over key areas of everyday life and defence and would always hold a quarter of the seats in parliament no matter what. Even in 2015 when Myanmar held its first genuinely open elections since the 60s and the NLD won in a massive landslide against the pro-military USDP party it still wasn't enough to break the military's stranglehold on power.
At the forefront of the resistance is the National Unity Government which is made up of a lot of the people that would have led Myanmar if the election hadn't been overthrown. The NUG formed in early 2021 and began working alongside and getting help from a number of ethnic resistance organisations.
All of this has significantly worsened the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and the military has been accused of blocking food, medical supplies and other aid. United Nations expert Tom Andrews says the military needs money, weapons, and legitimacy to sustain itself. The military has announced plans to hold elections so it can appear to support democracy with a government it can control. UN member states have been urged to ignore this election and recognise the NUG as Myanmar's rightful government. There have been calls for an international arms embargo as some countries like Russia and China have continued to supply weapons to the military junta. When it comes to money targeted economic sanctions are being encouraged. - Nicholas Maher

I see a few reasons why countries were so quick to act for Ukraine but not for Myanmar. 1. Myanmar is a civil war, not an outright invasion by a large power. If China decided to invade Myanmar to "liberate" them, you can bet there'd be a lot more attention. 2. Food and energy - Russia and Ukraine export massive amounts of both, and we saw how prices skyrocketed around the world. Countries care more about a conflict when it affects social stability in their own borders. The war in Myanmar barely affects anyone except for their immediate neighbours.

Thank you for making this video. I'm a citizen from Myanmar and want to appreciate this channel again for making this amazing video. I love the word used in the video titled "Forgotten War" which is indeed the truth of what's happening in Myanmar right now. I really hope that our civilian government can win the authority back against this Junta this time. If we couldn't win this time, I'm afraid that we will not have another second chance, and not sure how many years or decades we need to wait to get this chance again. So, we need all the attention and support from all over the world to save the justice.

In my very humble opinion, Burma would have been much better off without Colonialism. For instance, there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian there up until Colonialism.. [For more, pls read my insightful informative multi-pages comments by 'Ms. Gregoria' at, "Myanmar remains in social and economic crisis since military seized power/BBC News". It's on KZread].. I supposed it's fair to say that many of these tragedies that nation facing today, such as racial, ethnic and religious conflicts, began with Colonialism.. Just saying. 😔😔😔

'Anglo caused most of the world's problems.' - David Cameron, former British Prime Minister Anglo clans practiced centuries-long Slavery; from Caribbean to North & South America, by wiping out indigenous Native people originally living there, by replacing them with millions of slaves brought from Africa, by enslaving them and living off on their blood and sweat. Isn't it shocking to learn that Anglo clans invaded nine out of ten nations, all but 22 nations in the whole wide world? Anglo practiced centuries-long Colonialism in over 50 nations, by living off on their blood and sweat, as well as on those bountiful lands for natural mineral resources, which were essentials requirement for the industrial revolution. Anglo still Colonized many parts of the world, including two vast bountiful landmasses; North America and Australia. Among the five main Anglo nations of Britain, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, all but Britain were looted from others.

This is definitely a factual documentary. Thank you so much for all the efforts you have made to make this documentary. Military junta is dying for the legitimacy and the people don't want them at all. We're losing innocent lives, and plus hard-earned properties on a daily basis across the country. UN is just printing condemnation letters and posting them online. We know we must fight for our own freedom, but as long as the junta is getting access to weaponry how can we remain steadfast? We just need UN to force the junta not to use airstrikes on the civilians. That's it. If the junta couldn't use airstrikes, people would have won earlier.

I think people from El Salvador can heavily relate to this, as back in the 70's the country experienced a military coup then next a civil war broke out lasting for 12 years. My dad at the age of 13 to 15 already got his hand on an ak, though I'm not sure if ever actually went into fighting with the rebels against the military. The El Salvador Civil War is pretty forgotten unless your from a Salvadoran immigrant family or a Salvadoran. It's quite sad to see the same thing repeat.

I feel like the reason is because simply Myanmar isn't as important on the world stage as Ukraine is. The war in Ukraine is a global matter, as one of the fighting participants is Russia, a big player in the world stage, whilst the war in Myanmar is mainly internal affairs. It's the same thing with the wars in the middle east and Africa.

Why did not these same demonstrators stand up for the Rohingyas? If they had lost their lives doing so I would better understand. Aung San shu supported the army knowing full well, that a genocide was going on. She denied it. I have no idea why all these people lost their lives, goaded on by reporters, and other countries who had no plan to help, as it would escalate in a world war. If the demonstration had lasted say for a peaceful week, the result would have been better. Let the army have it's 2 years then see. Nothing will change I guess, but thousands would be alive for their families
