Valve clearances out of tolerance can cause starting problems. Do a compression check and go from there. The beauty of the old xj600 is it really is a very easy bike to work on. Good luck

100% agree! It's very simple to work on! And there are still lots of parts available and cheap too! For example : I have seen quite a few used running engines for less than 200 Euro! Or even full bikes for less than 300!! Sometimes the owners just want to get rid of them because they are not valuable bikes.

@@FreeMilesMC ive had starting issues with mine before, find a wireing diagram and check for any wireing issues, i had a starter wire loose going to my main relay box. also check the starter circuit, unlike moden bikes theres no real ECU so everything is simple to fix my headlights wernt working once because the plug had fallern of the back of the bulb it can be really simple dumb stuff

It’s probably something simple, check the needles for wear and if there is debris in the fuel system. Just keep going back to it when you get stuck, you done need to be a mechanic just meticulous with problem solving. I’m glad you are keeping it as they are well made machines with previous generations behind them. Good luck with your new machine 🤘

Took this off an XJ600 forum that was having the same issue as you. ""Well either the pump is faulty, or the electrics are faulty. There isn't much to the system in terms of electronics. The fuel pump relay supplies power to the pump when the ignition is turned on. This is a constant feed (usually). The pump is a low pressure unit with a pressure sensor built in. If the pressure in the line is below x, it pumps. If the pressure is above x, it doesn't pump. To test the pump: 1. Disconnect the pump outlet from the carbs, put it into a container. 2. Switch on the ignition. It should pump, and keep pumping. 3. Put your thumb over the end of the line and hold it there. After a little build up of pressure, it should stop pumping. 4. Take your thumb off the end of the line. It should pump again. 5. Repeat steps 3&4 until you're happy that it works. I would probably do this test off a separate power supply - like a 12v battery wired direct to the pump, seeing as the wiring is also suspect. If the pump behaves properly running off a battery, then the wiring is the next place to look. 1. Find a wiring diagram. Get familiar. There will be two main areas to look at. The feed from the main wiring loom to the pump relay, and the wiring from the relay to the pump. 2. Find the earthing points. The wiring to the relay probably uses a main frame earth shared with lots of other circuits. Even so, find it and clean it up. 3. The pump may have its own earth point. If this is heavily corroded, or the wire looks knackered, clean up the earth and/or replace the knackered wire. 4. If all of the earthing side looks fine, then look at the live side. You could have an internal break (pain in the arse, the wire looks fine but is broken inside the insulation), but if you are lucky you're find a wire which has chafed against something and is shorting out. Replace the offending section of wire. 5. If all of the earths look fine, and the wiring looks fine, and the relay is new, I would just replace the wires feeding the pump and see if that fixes it. So that's the live side to and from the relay, and the earth side from the pump. Finally - make sure you know what voltage the pump is meant to have before you start fiddling with it. I have come across 9v fuel pumps on scooters before. I discovered it was a 9v pump after I put 12v across it and smoke came out. Also, if all of this fails, it may work perfectly well on a gravity feed. A fuel pump on a carbed bike should only really be necessary when the fuel level in the tank is at or below the fuel level in the float bowls. This is only likely to be the last litre or two of reserve.""

In summer, I did my motorbike license after almost 20 years of driving cars in Germany. When it came to get my first bike, I explicitly went for a easy to work on, old bike with carbs. Wonder what you will get as a replacement for your XJ600. I was looking for a 600 N and some other bikes, but ultimately ended up getting a SevenFifty from 1995. It's an awesome, chunky lady.

Is there a spark? The coils (zundspülen) could be tired and might just need replacing. They’re wear & tear (Verschleißteile) items . Hopefully enough there’s fuel getting through , check the fuel-filter - maybe it’s blocked however, this is combined with having a clean tank without any sediment at the bottom. Be kinda cool to see that sweet red Xj600 back on the road. Best greetings from Düsseldorf 😉

🏍️🏁💪👍 PS: Was macht eigentlich der Fuß? 🤔🙏
