KZread didn't post the comment I left here 2 days ago because it was long which happened before. As you put so much effort into the video, I'm going to skim watch it again and try to repost as much of what I remember. I'm sorry to hear about your friend, RIP. In 2 to 3 years I plan on getting a workshop built with 3 phase power, gas etc so this is a very helpful video, especially your 1 work benches, dust / vac and 3 phase observations. Good call on getting quality tools sooner if worth it given the costs are going up. I'm based out of Ireland with 3 phase outside my door. I pay the cost of installation and trenching but that's it unless I go past the Maximum Import Capacity (MIC) of between 12 kW and 16 kW which no 3 phase tool I'd be interested in should. The standing charge is the same. Knowing 3 phase machinery is going cheap is great. A friend imported a 3 phase Colchester lathe. Cost £6000 and £1000 to bring to Ireland. Festool's integrated system is great yet Mafell don't seem interested for some reason. Peter Millard did a good comparison of Festool vs Mafell plunge saws and had concerns about the Mafell. I've heard bad things about Festool's Carvex and have just ordered a Mafell P1 cc to cut some hardwood sleepers. I may pay £1500 for a mitre saw if it is quality and I get the use out of it. I'm a tool snob and work in software development. You stating that one of your biggest regrets is buying cheap tools to start with gives me licence-to-snob : )

There are channels like yours that I wish would concede and climb just enough for satisfactory reach and payment. Some may not be who they were after or be sick of it shortly and quit. It’s a system like many others that rewards people who are better at things like gaining grades or marketing and advertising. I don’t think going viral is a thing anymore, especially in woodworking, and success on KZread is a climb with following trends. Somehow it is a mess and orderly at the same time. More concisely. Sensationalize everything and market personality over content. Only post rising trends. Stomaching that is painful even for a minute. It may not be worth it.

Enjoyed the tour. The right level of detail & pace, mixed with some dry humour. When it comes to the tools one needs & how to set up a workshop, there is no correct way. It depends on what you're making, what your budget is, what space you have to work with etc... Cherry picking the ideas that work for your own space & workflow is, as you said, the way to go. A couple of observations from my own experience. French cleats are probably a good idea for large workshops (typical US ones) where you have tons of wall space. In your typical UK garage or shed-size shop, they're quite space-inefficient. I had a cleat wall when I first started a few years back & it was good in that it allowed me to swap things around to suit my workflow. A few months ago I took all the cleats down & replaced them with simple cabinets with shelves inside & door, onto which I mostly attached Lidl Parkside £3.99 magnetic strips everywhere. This allowed me to pack in a huge amount of tools & consumables in a small footprint. Regarding dust collection. I'd love to have multiple shop vacs but don't have the space to keep them. I set up a system of 40mm PVC pipes, 3D printed blast gates & extensions back to a power takeoff on a Stanley Fatmax vac & DIY cyclone. I use this for my stationary tools (bar jointer/plainer) and have a hose to connect to sanders & tracksaw etc... This works relatively well but I found it often clogged up when I tried to clean the workshop floor of bigger chippings & debris. For this I got an Evolution worksite box vac, which I can easily clear if it were to block. I also acquired an industrial extractor which vents out a window & should keep the air relatively clean.

I was lucky enough to find a used Festool router table a few years ago with all the add-ons minus the router. I do run it with the 1400 and no problems. Happy I didn't go down the make myself path since I already had the 1400. The manual seems to not want the end user to fit the 2200, glad to see you have no issues with that combination. Oh, that’s interesting but then I’m not one for manuals I thought it was the opposite, how the lift connects to the router also seems designed for the job 🤯 Doesn’t help mind you, I don’t like the handle on the 1400 and I don’t like the 2200 for the weight for free hand stuff, I can’t win 😂

Cheers Ben, My next major upgrade would be going to a combo machine for space. You made me take not of some wtf options. Re adjusting. I gotta watch the work bench section again as well

Yeah it’s kinda a pain to find one that I would 100% recommend too… there’s two tiers really, simply put you have one company making them all and then companies tell them what changes to make and then slap their brand name on and sell them as theirs, then you have the higher tier why actually do all the R&D make their own and they’re big bucks!!! Rag and bone brown did a good video on the tier we’re talking about, I’d want one that the tables lift up as one too but you’re see in his vid kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqZ5vM2NZ8ync6w.htmlsi=0vXlv-mpZGKF1rkV check the comments too, all that will save you hours of research! 👍

@@dainermade To add to that, I went for the Record Power PT107 with spiral cutter which is mentioned in Rag 'n' Bone Brown video. It has 2 single bed instead of one but it doesn't bother me at all and I am very pleased with it so far. Best buy I did. but you're an aussie idk how easily they are available there.

One tool I really regret buying is the Bessey clamps. I was suckered in by the hype. Of course, they work, but they’re a bigger to handle. My pipe clamps are fantastic.

So much good info. A lot sapping my pockets but I’m Patreon’ing up the moment I can. It’s all real and honest, opinions and harsh reality of staying in business even with a practiced skill set and solid as (beep) work ethic. The dovetail tool reminds me of Jim Kingshott’s tool. Good to know some things still prove “if it works, why change it?”

I haven't gotten through the entire video yet but thank you for 2 things so far...mentioning Bosch, which, aside from their routers, don't have nearly the following in the US that DeWalt does and I think that's a shame. And 2...cordless tools. Other than my drill/driver, my woodworking tools stay in my shop. I prefer corded because, as you mentioned, I'm not wasting time waiting for batteries to chsrge and honestly they're just cheaper. Thanks for all the great content!

The whole battery fascination going on now blows my mind for so many reasons, I mainly feel it’s a con ££££. I have to replace the batteries for my camera every year costing well over £100, camera I don’t have any choice corded just doesn’t work when you’re moving a camera around every 5 mins. And let’s not forget what goes into making them. When I spoke to dewalt recently about their new router they said they won’t be making a corded version, well I won’t be buying it then, made me question why though. Comprehensive mate. What I take away is being careful to invest in the right tools for you, and spending the right money on what matters. A quality and curated tool collection that gets used is better than having everything under the sun.

I feel your pain, I have a Felder combination machine that I have used for the last 20 years and it is a PITA to setup the temple bolts for the J/P and the run out of the sliding table is a constant annoyance. If “General” were still in business (the Canadian equivalent to Wadkin, Oliver and the like) I would gladly send the thing packing a buy all separates. Great video, I’ve been caught over the bench a few times with my trousers down when it comes to tool purchases.

Festool should really look into changing the ergonomics of the domino jointer to look and feel more like a hand planer. Think about being able to grip the handle and just punch it in. Though, I’ve never personally used one, I find myself at Woodcraft in the festool section quite often 😅

100% agree with you, if I have a lot to do with it I keep having to put it down and rest my wrist, I’d sooner pick up the 700 than the 500!

I've done a few 3 phase to single phase motor swaps in old machines (wadkin sliding table saw and robinson thickness planer), both 4kw (I think 5hp). Needs a new DOL starter and some belts, but pretty much just nuts and bolts work. Motors are around £350. They draw much higher amps and are larger but otherwise do the same job, and it opens up a world of quality old tools.

Great stuff Ben. I'm gagging for the Festool Kapex (my Makita is good but not great), but the cost is ridiculous. Mind you, my local. Audi dealer now charges £200 an hour labour so it's pretty clear that the world has gone mad. Love your content, it's still the best. I aspire to your skill level... Bit by bit! Yeah I know, my brother had a fast as fuck Audi car, A something, just a service and new pads was 1000’s. I looked into it and saw there was to many engine codes that would be shown if I tried myself so said no can do. I believe, we’ll have been told you can’t even change the battery cause it has to be programmed to work with the car, I’ve got one foot out the door with this world to be honest fella, it’s a cluster fuck and will only get worse.

I wiped some wax on the bessey bars and the glue problem is much less an issue and they are much smoother to operate.

Nice video mate, I agree that the kapex price is absolutely bollox now! I will probably bend over bite the spoon and buy it, just cause my little shed setup would really benefit from its footprint and the better dust collection.

I think I’d choose the Bosch glider over the kapex now, I just wouldn’t feel right for months for spending that on a mitre saw, even if I had endless amounts of money I still got a point where I go no way, like buying a Bugatti, 🤦🏻‍♂️

A lot of your reasoning and opinions are spot on - a man after my own heart. As for Festool, yeah way over priced, well made but geez at those prices. I think the only one I would think about buying would be the domino and after what you said about the 700, probably the one I would have - once I've saved up the money, sold a kidney and taken out a second mortgage 😀. Liked your worktop workbench or is that workbench worktop, either way, next on my playlist.

Cheers dude, I’d suggest second hand if you’re lucky you might find one still under warranty and then send it in to festool for a free overhaul 👍 warranty is 3 yrs.

The thing about Festool is they're very refined but they're not all that robust. I've seen AVE videos where he breaks them down and they're kind of homeowner grade.

What a video m8 that was a proper good watch really nice to see your collection in depth (well what you showed i know there is more you didnt. Probably 😂 would love festool at some point but cant afford now. The professional plainer thicknesser Will be next. Agree totally though on the bar clamps i have 12 a think at different lengths there great although ebay pack 4 heads for 35 quid a think. I deffo got tool envy though although just upgraded the table saw recently so thats helped alot 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

Great, but why?

After a fairly nasty accident but not permanent accident with a cheap charnwood router table which was at least half my fault. And may partly have been the left hand side of the fence moving forward after it was locked down. Ive been thinking and looking, at switching to a variable speed spindle moulder with a router spindle and an auto feed, if i can figure out where to shoe horn it into the workshop. Its possible to get all of that that for 1200/1800 used, sometimes with an autofeed. I wouldnt be surprised if thats below what your router table set would cost new.

For sure, does it collect the dust like what I have, no. But don’t get me wrong I’m not measuring dicks. Wasn’t my point… I’d love a spindle moulder, they scare the shit out of me mind you, but what can be done with one far out does a router table.

As always….thanks for the video. Regarding tool pricing, how many festool clones appear after patent expiry. No one else is prepared to do the r&d.

@@HewAndAwe. I think we will be seeing increased prices for a couple more years. There is no doubt festool are expensive tools, but I look at the depreciation of these tools, buying once. It is not only festool, I have seen Dewalt increase 18-20% this last twelve months. I purchased a new 10” cabinet saw, three years ago and it’s “on sale” £600 more than I paid, ( I converted from au$). I live 400km from Sydney and it was an extra £300 in freight not to my home , but the depot in town, I then had to get it from the depot. That’s not a complaint just an example of how expensive woodworking is. I’m old enough that this is the second sustained period where inflation is far exceeding our annual income increases. Further I’m now on a fixed income being retired. Finally it’s not the tools, it’s the materials prices , even paint grade unfinished 18mm ply is £120 a sheet, and that’s in Canberra, 3hours away. As I said always enjoy your videos, and thanks for the reply regards

Hello pal, good to see you again and especially with a feature length movie. As a hobbyist the majority of my tools are entry level (Evolution, Metabo etc) The only issue with these things is you need to calibrate or at least check them every time you use them. But as they aren't used all day every day they are at least fit for purpose. The one decent tool I really want is a sander, I probably have about 10 power sanders with the best one being a Bosch detail sander. I want the Rotax but have heard they are not as good as some other cheaper ones. But what I use for heavy material removal is a polishing mop, I have several of these with the Rupes Big Foot being my most expensive. If you put a decent head on it and some decent paper it cuts like a mf. So do the cheaper non orbitals as well. No good for finishing though. I have a DeWalt orbital but it is out of balance so it is a pain to use. Any advice on a decent affordable sander would be greatly appreciated Ben.

For woodworking, I haven't yet gravitated towards expensive hard woods(don't even know where to get the stuff from other than B&Q, which is extortionate. I guess general pine, spruce, cedar and ply for now. Some sanders I have are so underpowered they bog or stall even on the hardest of B&Q pine, some are more like grinders, the DeWalt is like holding a jack hammer (I believe this is a fault of my sander and not DeWalt typically. I think I want it to do a bit of everything, finishing will invariably be by hand anyway. Budget, well here's the thing. I don't know. I have never used a decent sander so no idea what to expect. BUT. ppl say the Rotax (which to me seems like the holy grail of sanders) is not a good sander unless you want to hog. I think, if I am being sensible my budget should be a non entry level (but not brand specific) that would take me to the next level with plenty of room to upgrade later should I feel the need to do so. Could you recommend a £50.00 one a£75.00 one and a sub £150.00 one. Is that even possible 😁😁@@HewAndAwe

@alexcollins9513 ..have you thought about card scrapers 😂 no I can’t mate, that’s to cheap. Even if I was desperate I’d have to be absolutely desperate to buy the dewalt their sanders leave you with pins and needles for hours after using them! I forget to mention those sanders which I kicking myself for, they’re what I had way back when. For a rotex type sander with out the festool price I’d buy the Bosch version (not a finish sander though) a general sander 5mm stroke I’d say the metabo the one with the paddle switch 400-600 it’s pretty much the Mirka then there’s only the festool ETs 150/3 sander. Saying that if you have a big compressor you could buy air sanders which are very cheap, I think the mirka air sander is 150 quid, electric version 600! Outside of that read some reviews rake KZread and take a gamble. For a tool you can be using for hours it’s worth spending good money on if you can dude.

I agree with almost everything on this list, minus the cheap tool bit. If you are 100% certain you are going to use a tool regularly, buy once cry once, but in the instance of not knowing if you will actually use the tool or learning HOW to use the tool the cheap alternative can be better.

Agree on pretty much every point here. Given the space (and money) I'd have a fleet of bandsaws and separate planer and thicknesser n'all. Defo a bit of brand tax going on with festool and mafell. Im a mafell user as you've probably seen. Been eyeing up a 3rd drill/driver - 12v. Dont like the battery in the handle (too fat) so was looking at Mafells new A12 drill. Its a Metabo but slightly different spec (speed, balance aides). Its about £100 more than Metabos own. Madness. In fairness, for the tools they make themselves, both festool and mafell are over 90% in house or german sourced components . Still, £700 for a jigsaw and 1500 for a mitre saw? Its a big ask. I was gonna make a similar tool talk vid at some point. 👍

Even now, one of the best routers I've used. Just buttery smooth. Copy of the elu 900w ...dewalt bought them out. Its 110v though. @@HewAndAwe Works the same as on your festool of2200 big router mate. You have an opening on the Base for dust to go into, which goes into an extra fat leg and, on top, there's a port for the extractor. Love it!

Well if you were a brand and you asked yourself would you pay 1500 for a mitre saw and do you think these will sell, the answers gonna be no, but they put that price up. If you look at other tool companies most of them haven’t doubled or by a third the cost, granted they’re prices have gone up but not anything like festool and Mafell have raised theirs, also my thinking, they get most of their electric, ball bearings parts from china, stuff from china has hardly changed in price over the last 4.5 years. If I sound agro I’m not meaning to be 🖖

Hey I have quick question for you. I just got a jointer. I bought a cutech 8 inch spiral jointer. It has like those changeable teeth. Works good. But when I do side grain like on a charcuterie board , it tears out some of the wood. When it does tear out the grain , it’s like funky not straight grain. I work mostly with walnut and maple. Any suggestions ? Looks kinda like planer tear out. The setting on the little gauge said under 1 32nd. Thank you 😊

Some woods you’re gonna get a bit of tear out, but you maybe running the board too quickly over the head. But I’m a little confused cause you’ve said jointer (we call a planer) and then said planer (we call a thicknesser) there’s two different cuts so I’m not sure if you’re talking about both or?

@@HewAndAwe it’s the tool that joins the board together Like so you have a parallel side. I have one of those dewalt thickness’ers Like the part that you flip to get to on yours. 2 separate machines though. I get tear out on the jointer on the side grain. Another question that is separate. I watched the video when you restored the table saw. That was pretty cool. On my cuts through my saw , I get a tiny bit of tear out on the bottom left corner of most of the cuts. I work around it, but it annoys me. I like to make things as perfect as I can. I’m still learning , and you’re a very very good teacher and talented wood worker. I’ll watch you over Malecki every day of the week 😊. I know it’s late across the pond. @amazinga.f.artwork9047 forgive me, but only glue joins boards together, this is getting lost in translation I fear. More often than not either planer or thicknesser tear out can be minimised going at a slow speed, unfortunately a lot of thicknessers don’t have a speed setting, planing a board the speed you dictate.

You're going to the the Mafell over the new TS60 or TSV60 (if you want the scoring feature)

I said I’d like to, unlikely though.

Had to pause half way through... 3 Phase, I went the other way, I got the kit before having the ability to run it, simply because I couldn't pass the opportunity to have 4 really good Wadkin pieces of kit (specially the RM and the RS Lathe), I got them in what I think was a bargain, Total cost so far to install 3 phase, around £7800 and this my friend is without the ground works (which I'm hulking up myself), just ENWL and an Electrician to come in to put the board up and hook up the house. #justanidea Will it be worth it, Hell yes!

Curious why then didn’t you just swap the motors for single phase? I really had no idea, I googled it and what googled said was way under what you guys have said in the comments, why is it so expensive though?

@@HewAndAwe several reasons really, Firstly motors are expensive by their very nature, I also wanted to keep as much as the original kit as possible on these old beauties, considering I'm going to refurbish them top to bottom. Furthermore, they are power hungry, I simply didn't want to have to think about overloading or even any risk to either the machine (lack of power or anything else) or the circuit on a potential single phase workshop. But doing this I can separate everything nice and neatly. Also, what you said, 3 phase machinery are a LOT cheaper in regards to quality vs buck... so... I'd rather cough up then buy cheap, buy twice (I think someone else said that in this video ;) ) As for the costs, yeahhhh, I had that too... but getting ENWL to install the 3 phase and actually getting it up are two different things, out of everything drawing the power from the street was the cheapest bit (or is going to be) at around £3700, it's the rest that's the killer.

I know when I needed 16amp supply I was quoted silly money so did it myself and then had a man that knows wire in the hot ends, I know it’s not the same but in a sense of saving money.. hope that makes sense.

@@HewAndAwe ENWL - Cut Single Phase, --provide-- 3 phase cable - £3800 (this includes cable from the street to the Distribution Board in the garage) Electrician - Everything for connection (happy to share the quote with the breakdown privately/DM) - £4800 Grounds Works - dig up a ditch to run the 3 phase cable to the garage from the main supply on the street - £1000-£3000 - needless to say I'm doing this myself.

As a hobbyist , no way I can afford Festool. Nor would it be worth it for the amount of time I use my power tools. That said I did buy an expensive Sawstop table saw which i absolutely love. And how much is a finger worth by comparison. At the end of the day my really cheap Wen miter saw gets the same results as a Kapex and I’m totally satisfied with it. I could buy 15 of them for the price of one Kapex. That wouldn’t make any sense to me. Sure the Kapex is nice but not that much nicer.

Im not sure what to think about the Sawstop, really push sticks save the day so I kinda feel its unnecessary (Ive had 3 fingers cut off and sewn back on, not from tools) so I don’t say this lightly. Why Americans more so than not permanently remove the important safety features like a riving knife or splitter I’ll never know. A blade guard/dust hood will stop fingers getting to the blade just fine too. You will have to have a cartridge on standby if its set off which is expensive, it can be set off from a staple in the wood, quite common that people put tags on the wood with staples you could easily miss them, you could easily put a bit of seasoned damp wood through it and set it off by accident, or even a rogue foreign object no-one knew was in there, happens to saw mills every day. I think really you have to have two spare cartridges on standby, you pop one fit one and you haven’t another, would you still proceed to use the saw knowing if you pop the replaced cartridge you cant use the saw. The funny thing here is, I’m not sure if you are aware but TTS Tooltechnic Systems Holding own Sawstop and have since 2017, they also own Festool, so you say “theres no way you can afford Festool” gear… Was a yes or no question though dude, like I said I didn’t want a dick measuring contest over it. So nonetheless… The Wen…. It’s extremely loud, the dust collection doesn’t even come close to the Festool Kapex, its badly balanced with a stupid foot under the throat plate which is problematic, and at full extension it has a huge amount of play left to right, the hold-down clamp on some of them is laughable at best, it’ll take a lifetime crank that down on a workpiece so unlikely it’ll be used. And the knobs, those little plastic things… oh-dear. …It’s a beginners saw at best, certainly no good for fine work. Im sure I can safely say you haven’t spent any time with a Kapex 120 to say what you’ve said, bar that it is NOT worth 1.5K, hobbyist or not thats for sure, despite it being the most refined mitre saw available to date, not for 1.5K Anyone reading this I would suggest the Bosch or Dewalt mitre saws over the Wen below the price point of the Festool Kapex.

With tools, I always try to buy the best quality stuff that I can afford.....the problem is that I've spent all my money on tools and then I compounded the problem...by getting married! I like Mafell gear, but it's too pricey and most of their stuff is aimed at huge timber framing work. I love Festool, and try to get it if I can, but you're right about the pricing. It's gone mad. Fortunately I bought most of the essential stuff before the prices went crazy, although the Kapex remains on my wish list...but not while it's 1500 squids....I get by with my trusty Dewalt 708 aka the dust monster. I love the Domino haters who reckon that you can cut joints faster by hand or with a router....obviously they have never seen the machine in the flesh and /or are jealous that you can afford one...or both🤣(where's my tiny violin?). When it comes to routers, I like the old Elu/ Dewalt machines...Elu 177 and Dw625 can do just about anything you ask of them, but my favourite machines are the Dewalt 621 and 622...Not as advanced as the festool kit, but the best dust extraction ever.

I just saw the new dewalt router, man I nearly reached for the rugby sock, dust extraction-mind blown 🤯 and then saw the new safety mechanism… then I did reach for the rugby sock! BUT dewalt told me they have no intention of making a corded version, so I’m back in therapy.

@@HewAndAwe yeah, I like the look of the new Dewalt 18v router...I've got the smaller one already, and since buying it I have hardly used a corded machine, so a heavy duty 1/2 shank one would be awesome...might have to dust off the sawn off and balaclava and make a couple of withdrawals 🤣

You can actually just use a phase converter, and you don't have to spend all the money to actually have three phase Set up at your house that's probably the cheapest way to go about it.

Yeah I’m hearing that, not overly keen on bolting that to a fresh newly refurbished wadkin though. Maybe they can go on a wall and run a cable to the motor from there?

I wish the brother had seen this a week ago he asked my advice i said a sedgwick CPr or the like something with a cast fence and dovetailed tables but noooooooooo he likes shiny things (his words) bought a fellder lift up table but that lift up table and the fence i dont like i mean they went cast on the most of it so why not go with a cast fence and dovetail slide with the rack and pinion ffs , sorry for the rant

Yeah I hear ya! My fence is aluminium, but then I think to go to thickness mode I have to lift/move the fence completely out, cast iron would be pretty heavy to be doing that.

$3000 and the fence doesn’t stay square. Unbelievable. Same issue with the Jet Joiner Planer combo. Crap aluminum fence.

That really pisses me off, I forgot to mention to that the fence is aluminium, the bracket is cast iron though. I really liked the look of the jet thought it was made by powermatic which I believe to be good, but couldn’t get them here not with out pulling my pants down.

I have the original corded Mafell P1cc and cannot find fault it especially with the W1 blades ,it does needs target light but so does the Domino which is why I use a head torch now as my eyes are pish poor from age and other crap that makes you go blind

I wasn’t meaning quality, I’ve no doubt the mafell saw is good, I’d have one if it was necessary to my workflow. That reminds me I’ve been meaning to fit a light to the domino for ages!

Don't install 3 phase...buy 3 phase tools and put a VFD on them. I've even had luck with the

@@HewAndAwe Yeh, one VFD per tool, but they're about $75USD, so pretty cheap. The other cool thing is that will give you infinite speed control via a dial. So, for the jigsaw, you can go from barely moving to extremely fast.

@@HewAndAwe Cost and loss of variable speed control would be the only reason not to swap the motor. That motor plan would definitely work, but most folks, at least here in the US where residential 3-phase is not common, just keep the machine original and slap on a VFD. I have them on 3 old tools in my shop. That said, if you really like the idea of buying a new motor, that will definitely work....just consider your shaft size (insert funny film clip here), mounting, and speed when shopping.

going to 3 phase is not cheap was quoted 32k for uk power network to run 3ph to my workshop , sold my 3ph saw and bought a single phase combi machine as I have kek all space but you can get a variable speed drive to convert single to 3 ph

@@HewAndAwe going though the back and forth with u. power networks they were going to have to run new cables underground over a half mile from the village sub station to the yard and were having to do loads of legal with the farms en ruete . but ended up that Id be paying to ahe all that done on a rented workshop ( this was in 2015 , How I got around it was I built a 30M sq workshop beside my house which still is not big enough for my collection of slabs and exotics so now have a decent sized workshop round the corner and use the one beside the house to store and dry wood and also my hand tools ( non stationary ones)
