I think that’s one of the problems with people’s understanding of character development tho- it’s not his position that makes him interesting or that he is the leader of something. What makes him interesting is his growth in realizing the differences between him and his father, understanding he has to fend for himself, growing to comprehend the differences between justice and vengeance, becoming both more merciful in some regards, but also hardened to the suffering others face. Victory and loss are not interesting in a vacuum, their effect on his character is what makes him profoundly important.

He was afraid of being killed so he ratted them out and was afraid of getting banished so he couldn't tell them the truth either. At his last moments fear also consumed him when he almost rats them out again even though he felt remorse earlier, and I don't know if it's intentional but I feel like his story arc continued with Donkey really well.

Also love Caesar’s ride or die crew. Caesar EARNED their loyalty & friendship, and they reminded him of who he is, not who stupid Woody Harrelson wanted to make him. If Caesar was the way Koba or the Colonel wanted him too, he would have never befriended Rocket or Maurice. It’s Caesar’s fairness, great leadership, and always wanting to try for peace that draws the loyalty to him. This is probably my favorite trilogy that came out in the 2010's. I love the connections to both the original 1968 film, and particularly with this one the connections to the Ten Commandments (which was Charlton Heston's other major film role). Just as God told Moses that because he broke faith that he would not be allowed to enter the promised land, Caesar died as a result of succumbing to his need for revenge over the safety of his own people. The biblical themes are integrated into this story about apes so naturally. I highly recommend watching the original film at some point, it's basically a feature length twilight zone episode.

It was interestiong to see Caesar basically take Koba's actions as his own personal failure in life. The starting of the war, the realization that animalistic behavior is not subject to species (or race), and that Koba was scorned by time and torment. Caesar really used him to personaify his own animalistic nature slowly growing as the war continued and as he watched his family and people die. He hoped that when Koba died in Dawn, his ideals would too, but that scorn continued as Caesar's personal demons. Mourice almost seemed like the opposite end of this personification, as the angel on the shoulder, helping Caesar to remain loving and focus on what is beautiful. Notice that Mourice, and his ideals, lived on even after Caesar died. Those morals were not forgotten or abandoned, but continued to live on in his people, and with the Original movies, into Cornelius.

For the young folks, Nova is the woman who Charlton Heston fell in love with in the original movie, written by Rod Serling, the creator of Night Gallery and Twilight Zone. Cornelius was the most reasonable ape. There was a virus in the original trilogy, but it killed off all dogs and cats, so people started using apes as pets and eventually slaves, until Caesar was the first to say no. The timelines of the trilogy don't line up because the original was 2000 years into the future, where most apes didn't know where they came from. They had re-written the bible to be ape-centric, and were cruel to humans.

  • @dunringill1747

I'm not sure if you are avoiding spoilers, but there are more layers to the original 5 PotA movies than you are stating here. *[Spoiler Talk Below for the Original 5 PotA movies]:* The original 5 can be segmented into two alternate timelines. The second timeline is aware of the major events of the first timeline. The first 2 movies deal with the first timeline. This is the timeline where Aldo the Gorilla was the first ape slave to say "No" to humans. Aldo was the Leader for the Ape revolution. The war to follow ended in the future with the Ape-Centric Bible & Apes being cruel to humans. The humans had the capacity to speak yet for "mysterious reasons" never did, nor did they possess human level intelligence. Humans are nothing but pesky animals to the Apes in this timeline. However, A small segment of humanity evolved differently from the past nuclear wars between humans & apes. They were intelligent mutants with psychic mind control abilities. They were also Zealots that worshiped a doomsday bomb created by humans from the past. The first timeline ends when the bomb is detonated, destroying the entire Earth. The 3rd through 5th movies deal with the second timeline. Cornelius and Zira escaped Earth before it exploded in the human spaceship from the past. They went through the worm hole back in time to our 1970's and had a son named Caeser. This is the timeline where Caeser the Chimpanzee was the first ape slave to say "No" to humans. Caeser became the Leader for the Ape Revolution (not Aldo). After Ape victory, humans were first treated as second class citizens under Caeser's rule and were ordered to educate the Apes. In this timeline: Aldo the Gorilla formed his own gorilla militia and was rebellious to Caeser's rule. Aldo and his militia found the small segment of mutating humans that were destined to become the ancestors of those mutant Zealots from the first timeline. Aldo's militia killed them all but kept this a secret to Caeser. Aldo attempted a coup (Coup d'état) to overthrow Caeser and lost. After this, Caeser granted full citizenship rights to the humans. The epilogue of the 5th movie shows an Orangutan from the far future teaching the entire history of both timelines to ape and human children. Apes & Humans are treated as equals in this society. The History Teacher Orang explains to the children that they are prepared and waiting for the mutant humans to make an appearance. They are unaware that Aldo wiped out these mutant humans' ancestors long ago.

Since you've watched the entire trilogy, I recommend checking out the original part. Especially the first one (the next ones aren't that good anymore). Everything in the trilogy led to the events of the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes. In each part of the trilogy, there were references and plots that continued or ended in the original film - which is why I believe that after watching this excellent trilogy, it is imperative that you become familiar with the film that started it all.

Former certified sign language interpreter here. The sign language that's used here is not only "perfect" - it's perfectly crafted for the rudimentary use that the hands of an ape would use in two ways. One for "someone that knows sign language better (Caesar) and then ultra-foundational for the rest of the Apes. It's genius film making knowing that the actors mocapping have to perform it, and then the animators have to map-over that to generate it. It is SUBLIME.

It's been a great privilege for the fans of this channel to see your growth and depth of knowledge continually increase, and I don't think that I'm alone in admiring your connection to these films and many others having a real effect on you, to the extent that you are affected emotionally, which happens so often for us nerds, welcome to our wonderful (although occasionally sad) world, more to come that will connect all of us to both you and Holden, what a rewarding journey it has been since you were first introduced to this channel, we all stand with both of you in being profoundly affected by the magic of the movies

Fun fact: The ending Caesar was supposed to die off screen, but the ending was emotional for Matt Reeves, Andy Serkis and Karin Konoval as they lost family members during production. Maurice wasn't supposed to speak in this scene but Matt Reeves and Karin thought it would be much more powerful and impactful if Maurice spoke instead of using sign language. Caeser stroking Maurice's hand was literally Andy comforting Karin while shooting the scene. During the death of Caeser, Matt Reeves told Andy Serkis to "Just Let Go" so Caeser slowly lays to his rest which wasn't in the screenplay, and in return Karin comforts Andy. This is why the ending was so powerful and emotional .

  • @thomaskilroy4573

The point of focusing on the soldier is that you end up thinking he will be the one to save Caeser, then when it turns out to be the Gorilla traitor, it makes it all the more impactful and shows how the apes truly do have that loyalty deep down for each other that the humans lack. It makes it all the more satisfying that they are the ones who end up becoming the dominant species.

Caesar not making it to the end with his people he led out of bondage is right out of Exodus with the story of Moses. So many Biblical references thrown in were great. And yeah the first episode of the original would be good for Jen to see how the story goes and who knows she might want to get nuts and watch the crazy stuff that happens after that with the human bomb worshipping cult and stuff. POTA was like the first serialized movie series (other than the old shorts that they'd run in theatres ) iirc. Anyway back in the day these were huge releases. Would probably be a good series for your channel. But let's watch The Batman first :)
