Based off everything Jen said after the movie, she's going to love Top Gun : Maverick. I think the filmmakers purposefully subverted the audience's expectations with Iceman. They want us to think he's going to be the unlikable rival in the beginning. But he's basically Maverick's conscience throughout the movie.

I would like to be excited about the sequel reaction, but (for my personal tastes), I'm not excited when they do reactions with Matt. I don't know him, so I'm not passing a judgment on him as a person, but it feels like he goes into movies with a "You can TRY to impress me, but you'll fail" attitude. Again, just my personal feelings, but as long as people are watching, I won't begrudge the videos being made.

Maverick is a shallow self-absorbed, arrogant, narcissist who has a problem with authority and difficulty in social situations with basically one friend who keeps him balanced. It deals with the psychological impact of someone losing their only meaningful relationship. Iceman is the foil to Maverick but that means he is the opposite of narcissistic and self-absorbed. Maverick gets chewed out and in trouble in almost every scene of the movie; it is to represent his problem with authority despite being in the military. You have come to expect some ideal protagonist. A set of values that the main character will come to embody by the end. This movie represents that is not reality. Reality is flawed people become less flawed....not nearly perfect people become perfect.

In 1986, if you aren't already trying to get your audience invested in a side character, you hire Meg Foster to play their wife, not Meg Ryan. In the 80's, if you were the main character's best friend, and got a famous actress for a wife, but never got any lines except to drive the main character's storyline, you were pretty much a goner.

Growing up in the 1980s like I did, you don't skip out on what this film meant to the culture. Months earlier, there was a film of similar content called Iron Eagle (loosely based on true events) that had spawned 3 sequels. But Top Gun would eventually outrun, outgross and overshadow that film. Cruise as an leading man on his A-game with a great supporting cast. The late, great Tony Scott (brother of Ridley Scott) with one of his first blockbusters features with producers Bruckheimer and Simpson. Everybody wanted to be a fighter pilot after seeing this and the impact on recruitment was unbelievable. No.1 film of 1986, soundtrack goes platinum and the song "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin won an Oscar & Golden Globe for Best Original Song. There was a video-game franchise, 18 games. It was in limited re-release for IMAX theatres only in 2013. I saw it for the first time and enjoyed it. At that time, that's when the sequel was starting to take shape. RIP to Clarence Gilyard as LTJG Marcus "Sundown" Williams.

I watched Top Gun all the time as a kid back then, and I loved the Iron Eagle franchise too. Even in those days, I knew Iron Eagle wasn't on the same level, but I recently went back and watched some of the first one. It's even more delightfully campy 80s action B-movie than I remember. I figure I should add this too. So my dad's a massive pinball machine collector since before I was born. Well back when I was a kid he got the F-14 Tomcat machine, which coincidentally also came out around the same time, in 1987. I was born in 86, same as Top Gun & Iron Eagle. Anyway I played the shit out of that machine, it was one of my favorites. Another one called High Speed was very similar to Sega's Outrun, and I think it came out around the same time. Another one of my favorites.

Iron Eagle was one I loved growing up as much as Top Gun. As a kid in love with the Air Force ..... and being a kid .... I could see myself being part of the gang jumping in and planning. I put them on the same level but for different reasons. TG had more intensity but IE was more Fun(?) as a younger person.

I've seen a couple of comments claiming this doesn't have a storyline, and that's nonsense. It has several very clear paths from start to finish in terms of plot, character, and theme. We have a very clear 3-act structure, primarily centered around the Top Gun School and building to graduation. We have the character arc of Maverick which carries through into the real world to show the growth that he has achieved on his journey, literally a hero's journey, which includes everything from a mentor to the innermost cave to everything else Campbell put into the mix. The evolution of his attitude, the need to work as a team and *not* try to be the top gun, all of the stuff is so clearly spelled out that it could not possibly have a more obviously clear storyline from beginning to end by every standard of screenwriting.

26:50 - They purposely didn't name the hostile foreign nation as this movie was made during the Cold War and they didn't want to add fire to international tensions. The "MiG-28s" were American-made F-5E Tiger jets painted black with generic markings. They had a similar "mystery villain" with Iron Eagle (1986) and Iron Eagle II (1989), which you should react to as it competed with Top Gun in the 1980's. Ironically, they adopted the mystery villain concept again with Top Gun: Maverick (2022), despite the Cold War having been over for over 30 years.

I was so psyched to see this on my feed!! This has always been one of my fav movies, one of those few where, when I would be channel surfing (before streaming), and I’d see it on, I had to stop and watch it! I still remember the night I saw this in the theater back in 1986, the summer before my freshman year of HS! And the soundtrack is so iconic! I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU TO DO TG: MAVERICK!!! And, as I’m sure you know, the enemy “MiG-28s” were actually Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighters, often called one of the Best Fighters Never Made! Obviously, not “never,” but, not like it should have been! As an adult, when I realized the connection between the F-5 and the MiG-28, I went down a deep rabbit hole (which I occasionally revisit) about the F-5, and MAN! It, and its successors could have really been something special!!

The comparison between Iceman and Maverick is legit, and really shows itself in their friendship in Top Gun: Maverick. Iceman IS the superior pilot in almost every way. He knows the book, is precise, skilled, and thinks very tactically. He IS what the Navy wants in a pilot. That is shown in the end sequence when he is on the back side of five-on-1 against the migs and still managed to hold them off, completely defensive, until Maverick can get there (minutes later). Maverick is the outlier. He has instinctive skill to a level that takes him outside the book so far that it doesn't limit him like it does Iceman. He is one with the plane and it sings for him. He doesn't have the discipline or true focus to play to the navy rules, though, and that is what people dislike. They acknowledge the skill but are trying to tell him how to use it to everyone's advantage in spite of his barely toeing the line. The military can tolerate such a pilot in war time because they are effective, but fear it to be an infectious rot in peace time.

"Why are they sweating so much?" It gets hot down in the bowels of a warship. You've got a giant steel machine, filled with lots of inner compartments, all made of steel, and filled to the brim with electronics that produce even more heat, not to mention all the people (an American aircraft carrier usually has around 5K men on it when the squadrons are deployed). Also, these ships are usually patrolling trouble areas, which tend to be hot climates. When I was on carriers, we were usually in the hottest areas of the Pacific and in or near the Persian Gulf. My ship spent a lot of time patrolling the North Arabian Sea. It would get so hot that it would just overwhelm the air handlers. The most popular device for sailors on my carrier were these little plug-in fans that we could mount in our racks to help cool us down during sleep hours. Without them, you'd just lay there miserable in your rack, sweating and feeling like you were breathing soup.

love this movie!!! I had actually just joined the Navy and awaiting my departure date for boot camp when this movie came out. and as someone who was in the Naval Aviation side of the Navy, the general attitudes of the ppl in the movie was quite similar. Airdales always had an attitude vs. the rest of the surface Navy. OH and the song you were asking about at the begining "Danger Zone" this was a Kenny Loggins song that was an original song done for the movie and was only avail. on the offical movie soundtrack. even though it stayed on the billboard charts for ages, 'Take My Breath Away'. by Berlin(another orignal song for the movie) Won the Academy Award for Best Orig. Song.

Admiral Pete Pettigrew was technical advisor to the movie. He came up with the idea of Goose’s death and it not being Maverick’s fault. The f-14 would depart controlled flight and enter a flat spin and there would be a low pressure area above the spinning aircraft and the canopy would hang for a while and then disappear and you could easily hit it while ejecting.

The strange thing about this movie is that, in every military-based movie or tv series when someone is killed in action, the only explanation their family ever gets is "training accident", but Goose actually was killed in a training accident.

3:06 it was indeed written for Top Gun and was originally going to be performed by Toto, but they pulled out over a legal dispute so Kenny Loggins, who had already contributed a song to the movie (Playing With The Boys… the volleyball scene) took over. Danger Zone, Playing With The Boys, Take My Breath Away, Mighty Wings and Top Gun Anthem were all original songs for the soundtrack. Fun fact about the opening scene, the ship they were on (USS Enterprise) was on operational duty and had a set course, that course took away the sunrise backlighting the scene, Tony Scott requested the ship be turned and was told it would cost $25k to do so… Scott took out his personal chequebook and wrote one out on the spot. He later claimed that he made sure it bounced 😂 17:47 😬 this is gonna be painful… 19:50 yeah, just a concussion… and a fractured skull, broken neck, spinal compression, death… 25:46 the Enterprise has 4 catapults though 🤦🏻‍♂️ 28:20 they have multiple tags, Goose’s family would already have a set. 28:46 Kelly McGillis is 5ft 10in, Tom Cruise is 5ft 7in… for them to be the same height in this scene they dug a small trench in the floor for KM to stand in 😂 The flat spin scene was a depiction of a real world incident, the A model of the F-14 was infamous for its underpowered engines that would occasionally stall out and in extreme cases result in a flat spin, and in the movie it resulted in Goose dying. Sadly, while actually filming the scene, the camera plane shooting the footage lost control and plunged into the Pacific… the plane and its pilot, Art Scholl, were never recovered. The end credits has a dedication message to his memory. A little bit of fun… violations committed in Top Gun: 4:54 violation 1: dangerous flying… and something that could’ve sparked an international incident. 5:15 violation 2: obstruction of instrument panel. 5:27 violation 3: disobeying orders. 6:57 violation 4: riding a motorcycle without a helmet. 7:07 violation 5: riding a motorcycle alongside a runway. 9:16 violation 6: harassment. 9:56 violation 7: threatening an instructor. 11:08 violation 8: dangerous flying during a training exercise. 11:25 violation 9: flying, and engaging, below the “hard deck” (simulated ground level). 11:34 violation 10: disobeying orders. 11:34 violation 11: low level, high speed fly by over populated area (the base). 15:35 violation 12: engaging in relations with an instructor. 18:50 violation 13: dangerous flying during a training exercise. 22:48 violation 14: disclosing classified information. 26:06 violation 15: desertion. 27:44 violation 16: disobeying orders. 27:50 violation 17: low level, high speed fly by over the ship’s bridge. 14 of the violations in this movie are by Maverick, and then there’s his “rap sheet” that his CO read out near the beginning… safe to say he didn’t get his callsign because he was a goody-two-shoes 😂

I like how there is only 1 airboss in the whole Navy and wherever Maverick goes he follows him everywhere. Every ATC tower he ever talked to that guy was there to tell him no. At this point he should've filed a restraining order. BTW someone should've taken that girl to the flightline and show those F-5s that were parked there since she was so interested in those MIG-28s. ( F5s were used to pose as Russian fighters, they've painted them black ) Now you guys have to watch Hot Shots. Its funny and almost as accurate as TopGun. :)

I am wondering if Jen noticed or remembers that Slider (Rick Rossovich) was also in the first season of ER, he plays Dr. John 'Tag' Taglieri or Carol's boyfriend/fiance/orthopedist. The most of the "romantic" scenes were added in post, at the studio's request. The scene in the elevator Kelli McGillis has a hat on because she had already dyed her hair a darker color for a movie called Made in Heaven she was shooting. Also Tom Cruise has the towel around his neck because he was growing his hair out for a movie called The Color of Money. The sex scene was shot in silhouette to hide this changes in appearance as well.
