Yes it was an experience then, dark huge theater with the film shown in 70 mm Dolby on a collosal screen about 3 or 4 stories high with a packed house of moviegoers. I was 14 then and wound up seeing it about 6 times within a few months to a year. It was terrifying, unique and creepy to the enth degree, a horror film more than a sci-fi film. A true cinema classic. Ridley Scott is brilliant and hires the best teams around him. And the acting all around was just top tier. From Ash to Parker to Dallas to Ripley and etc., it was just real in every sense. This film is a cinema classic.

About bringing cats to a space: From the dawn of time when travelers where making long voyages (sea, land) they took the pets to give them company, make them not go crazy, make them laugh and release stress. Thats why dogs were introduce for voyages to North/South pole exploring (not just for the slide riding)

One more reason for ships cat was the pest control. It was extremely important for wooden ships (as mice and rats could literally eat trough the hull and cause flooding and chew ropes and canvas which could endanger rigging) and even in the age of metal ships rodents coud cause a fire (by chewing on cables) and spoil food supply. Only in 1975 did RN officialy ban cats and all pets from its ships.

The Xenomorphs are iconic, but they're just giant bugs with acid blood. The most horrifying alien entity is the Thing. Because it doesn't need to chase you down, stalk you in the dark, or any of that other monster tropey stuff. All it has to do is imitate a cute fluffy kitten or puppy and brush up against you. Or just some random person and bump into you in a store, on the sidewalk, etc. Or some little kid coughing or sneezing near you. One single cell is all it needs to take over your body. And nothing biological is immune.

Waaaait, wait, wait, wait, you've got to see Predator 2! It started the *whole* Aliens vs Predator franchise! Its significance as far as the lore of the Predators being galaxy faring hunters, and hunting xenomorphs can not be understated. Imagine for a moment when the original Predator came out; at that point, the audience could only assume that the Predator aliens had *only* been hunting on Earth. But in Predator 2 it officially *expands* the scope of their tradition. Idm if y'all skip making a reaction of watching it, but certainly off screen, to give context as to how the AvP franchise began.

This is my all time favorite horror movie. There are very few classic movie reactions I look forward to as much as Alien. Especially from people who have absolutely no idea what the Xenomorph’s are or what they can do. I saw it when I was WAY too young at age 11. The Xenomorph was literally the embodiment of my nightmares throughout my childhood. Fun/Scary Fact: The Xenomorph is actually based on a real life insect, the Tarantula Hawk which is a wasp from the southwest United States. It reproduces by hunting tarantulas, paralyzing them with it’s stinger, dragging them into the spiders hollow, laying an egg on the spiders belly, then the egg hatches and the larvae devours the spider from the inside out.

Alien...a master class in building tension and mystery. It's the concept of don't go in the house pushed to the limit mixed with the darkest side of sci-fi. Except for the computer aspect of the movie, it aged like fine wine, the model used and painted glasses in the cave of the ship giving a more realistic feel to everything on screen. H.R Giger is a mad genius with his creation of the Alien monster, a model of touching the inner human fear in his design ! It's a good candidate for top 5 best horror movie/sci-fi of all time !

You were talking about the beginning of sci-fi movies, actually, this movie, "Alien" took very close inspiration from a 1950s alien movie called, "It, the Terror from Beyond Space." They did not have much in the special effects department back then, but the basic plot is the same. Yes, you are not supposed to use a spoon, or anything else for that matter, to stick in a person's mouth during a seizure. When I taught CPR, the only thing you are supposed to do is place a soft object under their head, move objects away from them, and call 911, having the AED and first aid kit on hand in case they are needed. Trying to keep the victim from biting their own tongue can lead to you getting bitten or greater injury to the victim of the seizure.

There are some factors of the movie that could only be experienced when it came out. The actor of the first guy who died was a big name action star at the time, and all the other actors were recognizable names as well, except Sigourney Weaver. She was completely unknown at the time. So not only was that first guy getting killed off so early something nobody saw coming, neither was Ripley being the only survivor. On top of that, we praise her for being badass and smart right away now, because we know she’s the star now. But her actions in the beginning, trying to keep them quarantined, intentionally come across as heartless. They’re meant to get the audience against Ripley for callously leaving her crewmates to die and going by the book for her own self-preservation. Dialogue from her soon afterward reinforces this. We don’t get that sensation anymore, because even new viewers probably know who Sigourney Weaver is and know she’s the hero of Alien, or at least would have no inkling that she’s the least recognizable actor in the cast at the time the movie came out. Even right down to the scene where the xenomorph makes its last two kills, the movie is weaponizing tropes to make us not suspect that Ripley will be the sole survivor. The other woman on the crew is set up as that right up until her death scene. She in a team with the big, strong guy with a weapon, while Ripley goes back for the cat. Every victim so far has been someone who’s caught alone by the xenomorph, including one who went for the cat earlier, usually in dark places with plenty of hiding spots. Ripley is set up to die in that scene. But instead, the xenomorph abandons the pattern we’ve gotten used to, and makes its last killings of the movie in full view, against the group, not the individual, while they’re armed. It completely turns itself on its head at that point. This movie is really good.

I love this film various reason. The Riply's character is smart, quick witted and brave. Ripley is not just bimbo sex object (what Sigourney Weaver Spoofed in Galaxy Quest brilliantly) . She is top on my list of realistic heroes like with John McClane and Sarah Connor as heroes who bleed, who have traumas and are not superhuman but do incredible feats because its right thing to do or its according their principles.

I'll fix the uncertainty for you. "Prometheus" does take place before "Alien." Yes, it's in the same cinematic universe. No, it's not a direct prequel to "Alien." No, that's not the same ship, or Space Jockey. They aren't really connected story wise in any significant way.

Alien and Aliens are both incredible works of art! So much genius details and design in both. Idk if you guys play video games, but Alien Isolation is a fantastic game to give you the feeling of being in that situation. Also, since you're on a sci-fi alien movie binge, The Thing 1982 is a must!

I feel like prometheus only happened because ridley wanted to do a sci-fi story and could only get funding if he made it about alien. as far as i'm concerned there are 2 predator movies and two alien movies and that is that. there are some good parts to some of the others (predators, avp, and even prometheus) but Those 4 are the only ones i love.

Alien came out just 2 years after Star Wars, so yeah it's perfectly fine to compare that opening scene of the underside of the Nostromo with the opening scene of Star Wars showing the underside of a Star Destroyer. The scene in Alien is pretty clearly inspired by the scene in Star Wars. Aside from that, and the fact that everything has a lived-in & used feeling rather than being squeaky clean like in almost all other sci fi movies/shows at the time, the two movies don't really have a lot in common. Also, IMO you should really watch Predator 2. There are some movies in the Alien and Predator franchises that can (and probably should) be skipped, but I don't think Predator 2 is one of them. The first 2 movies in each franchise are good and really give you a feel for what the predators and xenomorphs are all about.

Star Wars also showed there was an audience for well made, big budget science fiction movies. Prior to A New Hope, there hadn't been very many, and the most recent one that had been spectacularly successful was 2001: A Space Odyssey, which came out all the way back in 1968.

Prometheus came out in 2012. And the derelict spaceship seen here in Alien & in Prometheus are more or less identical, of the same design & made by the same alien race but it's not the exact same ship. The Alien fandom is still waiting for exact connections between the prequel alien films & the original & it seems most unlikely that we will ever get any answers.

In the past, at the time of sailing ships, used to explore the unknown world, they would bring a cat along to control the vermin. At the time, it was rats. Jones symbolizes the advancement of travel, as well as the danger, with humans staying unchanged. Also, when people died on board, they would do an "ocean burial" and throw them into the sea.

Ripley went back to disable the self destruct because the alien was blocking the way to the escape ship (because of his fascination with Jones the cat). After attempting to disable it, the alien was no longer there (because he had stowed away on the escape ship!) so she could board the ship and be on her way. The ONE thing I would nitpick about this movie is that when the Nostromo blows up - THREE TIMES - it was just a tad overboard. But still a genuine 5 star movie! In the theater, when she blows up the Nostromo and then the credits DON'T start rolling, everyone was like, "Say what?" and we knew something was up. What that 'something' was turned out to be awesome.

She was right in ALL here statements about protocol to avoid EXACTLY what happened, unbeknownst to her the company was one who basically set different priorities. She was good person who cared about her crew. She wanted to get everyone home alive, and you can see Ripley was truly traumatize by not only alien but loss of her crewmates. Sigourney did amazing job. This is a good strong female character. She wasn't a flawless character, but a woman trying to right thing with everything going against her. Don't let the Rotten Tomatoes score fool you, it's every fan's favorite film besides the original, at least up until recently. It features the coolest looking Predator IMO and it's the only other Predator that's played by the original actor (Kevin Peter Hall) and uses the suit made by the original designer, the legendary Stan Winston, so the creature is badass. Just a few points... 1. H.R Giger, the Swiss surrealiast artist who designed the facehugger, chestburster, alien, alien ship etc actually used bones in his sculptures, including that of the derelict ship 2. The chestburster scene - as some others have mentioned, none of the cast knew what was going to happen. The chestburster was rigged up and loaded up with blood. Their reactions caught on film are 100% genuine "WTF". Ridley Scott was genius! During its initial runs, many cinema goers ran from the theater to be violently ill in the toilets after this scene (or were sick in their actual theatre seat). 3. The robot guy, was Sir Ian Holm. He not only played the priest in the 5th Element, but also Bilbo in the Hobbit trilogy. Classically trained actor with a wealth of very famous roles during his life (he passed away a few years ago). 4. Some scenes were omitted from the theatrical cut - Parker, Riple and Lambert in a cut scene actually trapped the alien in a airlock, only for Ash (the robot science officer) to release it. Also, after Parker and Lambert's death, but before initiating the self destruct sequence on the Nostromo (that's the name of their ship), Ripley stumbles upon a cellar section that had Dallas (the captain), and Brett (engineer, Parker's sidekick) being slowly turned into more alien eggs - they were cocooned by the alien. Some theaters did feature this in the theatrical release by mistake, but it wasn't until the movie was released to DVD many years later that these cut scenes were properly re-introduced as cut scenes. 5. There is a PS4/5 game called "alien isolation" based on Alien that is scary AF. If you have a feint heart, don't play it. 6. Finally, AVP (Alien Vs Predator) originated in a comic book series published by the now defunct Dark Horse comics. I have some of these original comics in my collection. Both franchises were owned by the now defunct 20th Century fox (now owned by Disney sadly) who took advantage of the idea as Dark Horse comics had to licence the material (and thus 20th century fox owned anything that they created). 7 Ridley Scott was heavily influenced by both Star Wars and 2001: a space odyssey. Some recommended movies to record reactions too: 1. Raiders of the lost ark (1982) 2. John Carpenter's "they live" (brilliant!) (1988) 3. Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" (same year of release as Alien - 1979) 4. The howling (1981) - classic werewolf horror film. 5. predestination (2014) - this film has sci-fi/mystery elements and is a complete mind fuck. Highly recommended. Vastly underrated, simply brilliant and thought provoking.

He's also not worried about an alien the size of a chihuahua - unless he lets it bleed on him. So going off alone to catch Jonesy seems like a pretty good idea so they don't keep picking him up on their motion scanner.

Jonesey: Space Cat. The only theory that makes sense to me is that he was a stowaway feline. I don't think that the "company", who had strict quarantine protocols in place would give consent to a furry mammal for space travel. Hence, Jones was probably discovered by the crew after launch and there was no turning back so to speak. No way would this cat survive the environment on it's own, so I'm guessing that he was sharing the sleep pod with Ripley. And with no Purina Cat chow on board, I'm sure Jones just ate what the crew ate. Also, since Jones was in hyper sleep for 57 years between the Alien and Aliens films, he holds the record for the "worlds oldest cat". Coupled with the hyper sleep time-line from this film, Jones clearly lived well past 60 years old. Maybe 70+.

I haven't read the books themselves, but I've watched so many lore videos, and it seems all of the adaptations miss different parts from each other, and there are some parts that got missed entirely by all 3, so outside of reading the books, it's kinda hard to recommend one adaptation over the others.. I've seen the three adaptations and the miniseries so far was my favorite, but I don't know how well they are going to do part 2 in 2023 yet.

@@apollohateshisdayjob9606 It's not the 1984, that was David Lynch...there was a documentary on it, it's a movie that Alexandro Jorodowsky try to make but it fail, and wasn't filmed, however all the talent he brought onbord was later use in most of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time like Alien and Blade Runner, shaping the sci-fi style for decades !

While landing the landing strut landed on a boulder pushing it up into the ship. Also, the crew are basically space truckers. P.s. the alien was blocking the way to the shuttle.

30:30 "I would have asked for something better than a net." When the thing can bleed acid that will carve a hole through your ship out into space, sucking all the air out of the ship and making it impossible to survive, there might not be anything better than a net. Catch it, contain it, freeze it, go home. This ship actually has laser guns. In the Director's Cut, we see Kane with one when he's investigating the eggs. They just can't use anything that might make the alien bleed.
