My Wife Dropped me at the Mexican Border - Yuma County Backpacking
3 Days of Desert Camping and Backpacking in Yuma County Arizona.
For this backpacking trip, I headed even farther south to a remote corner of Arizona not too far from border with with Mexico in an area known as the Kofa Wilderness.
For sleep and shelter I brought an ultralight trekking pole tent, 3-season inflatable sleeping pad, and a 40 degree sleeping bag, as the forecasted temperature range for this December adventure would range fro highs in the eighties down to as low as the upper 30's depending on wind conditions and where I chose to set up camp in the vast array of mountains and valleys found in this corner of the American Southwest.
My choices for camping food on this backpacking trip would be pretty simple - mostly because there are no reliable water sources in this desolate sampling of the Sonoran Desert. Since I would have to pack in and carry all of my own drinking water from the start, there was little reason to spend money and effort on traditional dehydrated backpacking meals.
Instead I chose to hit the local dollar store for some calorie dense, if not nutritionally diminished, food sources. The end result? 3 days worth of calories for under twenty bucks, and no water or stove required. ...there will plenty of opportunities to eat salad back in civilization. If I manage to get back there...

That pile of rocks with the lumber is a mining claim marker.
Always wear thick leather hiking boots in the desert, a wide brimmed hat for shade and never black anything- it absorbs heat and makes you sweat more when walking and you use up your water faster. Carry a small drone to send up on recon to avoid climbing up only to find a cliff on the other side. Cool adventure. 😎 Stay safe out there.

@@Cooperfelts 1. I am not old. 2. Trail runners come in thick leather should one prefer that type of shoe. 3. Gaiters are not desert hiking gear unless they are snake gaiters. 4. A good broken in pair of cowboy boots are best for going off trail in the desert.. no wimpy gaiters are going to save your legs from barrel and cholla cactus or possible snake bites. Great video. Thank you! I always enjoy. Just before the 49 minute mark you get quite the meteor shower in the morning. If you missed it, take a look. Super cool. Thanks again!
The rocks with the wooden post is most likely a marker for part of a mining claim
When I heard where you were, I got very uncomfortable......but you made the best of it. I prefer the hikes you take that have trees and water. Looking forward to the next time!
Great adventure. A bit unsafe being alone. Tougher shoes and gloves to avoid cactus thorns and stinging insects. Give you a lot of credit for undertaking this terrain on your own. The desert is in itself a splendid beauty
I'm from Mississippi and my older brother lives in Yuma. I've visited him back in the 90s it was a total shock to the mind from someone from Mississippi! Nice place to visit but I'll keep my butt in Southeast region lol!

Great video, just a heads up though you may already be aware but those water bottles are not strong enough to resist a sharp rock when you put your pack on the floor and the first thing you will notice is when you go to grab a drink and it's all gone. I've seen it happen. Keep up the good work love those views.
What a adventure bud, outstanding filming!
Great video. I really like that you're not on a particular trail. Just sort of finding your own route. Sounds fun.
Enjoy. That’s an amazing area to hike around. Some areas suck. I have completed San Diego to Cooks monument NM following the US border in 2019. I was on the Great Western Loop Trail. I followed the Roosevelt Easement most of the way. It Was amazing hike. Stay safe! Live Your Adventure!

I started in Feb 2019 in Grants NM. I had no issues on this hike. It was amazing. Border Patrol was great. (The Goverment carried a lot of water for me) Thanks again Border Patrol! Pretty safe and clear about 70 ish miles from the border. Been out in the Kofa game range many times growing up out in the desert southwest. Lots of mining was done out there in the past along with bombing range on the other side of the 95. Typically its very desolate and quiet out there. You got out there just in time before all the winter visitors/campers and off roaders over flowing from Quartzsite get out there. Its our prime camping season until april, temps down into the 30s at night right now in January. Pretty cool you made it out here. 👍
6 L is super impressive. I’d want that much water just for one day lol.
41:58 - Head on over to Saguaro National Park, you'll see loads of 'em. When you make a loop like this in the future, take a day hike in with a gallon of water and stash it for yourself. You can hike straight into your loop to stash it.

Sorry I was a few days late catching this one. I am subscribed to your channel but I don't seem to get notices when you have a new video. I find myself checking often, but missed this one until now. I must say you are a brave soul, being that near the border, alone, in the dessert. That is one place I don't think I would care to visit. Too brown for this Tennessee girl, and I am constantly sipping water, but thank you for visiting it for me. Our country is so vast from "sea to shining sea," and when I visited Colorado I felt like I was I a foreign country LOL! England is actually more like Tennessee than is our West. Your looking for the "road," reminded me of my hike in the English moors, a few years back. I as in Haworth, Bronte Country, and was hiking to the deserted farmhouse, Top Witness, that was the inspiration for Withering Heights, I started out by the city cemetery, following a path which got more and more narrow. I was alone, except for the sheep, and and that time I had no cell phone; just a video camera. Just as I was beginning to get frightened , as I could to longer see the path, I zoomed up that old video camera, and saw an old pick up truck next to a stone house. I also saw the sign leading to the place to which I was traveling. I played the video for my High School English students later, when I got home, and they kept saying "Mrs Robbins, you should have turned back." I was proud of myself, though, and I felt like I actually got the real Heathcliff experience! We live and learn, and next time you hike in the dessert, thick leather boots should should be a must. I was thankful for my English Spirit tennis shoes out there on the moors, thinking "no wonder Emily Bronte caught pneumonia and died, from her last visit out here. Take care out there, and stay safe . I always look forward to your new videos.
Thank you for sharing. Great video. You need to watch those bees in the southwest; they could be of the killer type. The desert has no place for lightweight clothing or shoes. Easy way to get pricked and punctured by pointy objects and infection before you know it. All the best and safe travels to you and the wife.
Omg what a trip for me to see Yuma again! My ex was stationed there for a few years early 2000s and it was definitely an interesting place to live 😁 I don’t miss living there but would love to see it again someday. I forgot about the blimp! And is that castle dome in the background by the blimp? We used to hike in the foothills. I imagine it’s all built up now. The boom you heard is from the Yuma proving grounds
I’ve done some desert hiking out in New Mexico and West Texas. It’s a different ballgame than east of the Mississippi. Good Stuff!

$250 in 1941 = $5,262.35 in 2023. Just a wee bit more for that souvenir than you thought lol Its nice to see you in my neck of the woods! You'd probably enjoy Northern AZ a lot more. I'd always bring a mini leatherman with me for all those cactus barbs when I'd hike.

It was heartwarming to see Sarah and Denali at the drop off. Countless fans are cheering you on, especially me. And the meteor sightings lift our eyes to the heavenly. There's also some great fossils near the mouth of Painted Gorge. You can climb up onto of this massive slap of them with a great view looking over the old military bombing range. Yeah, the desert is a hate it or love place that's for sure. I'm still on the hate side, and I know I always will be, however after visiting a few times now, I can at least appreciate it for what it is.... but it's still what it is lol.
Water: There may be ways to obtain water in the desert that few think about. In Chilli they use large screens (Mesh) to extract water from the cool night time air. A few years back there was a NOVA episode on that very technology. They extract a few liters per square meter of mesh. Much of the fruit from Chili is grown in their desert using that method. I wonder if you can get drinking water the same way? Shoes: Leather shoes would be far better protection than those mesh ones! Gloves: Gloves would permit using all 4 limbs to climb down or up! No cook Food: Ryan Van Duzer (Cyclist Vloger) eats Burritos that should be cheaper there, he gets wrap shells and squeezes refried bean, out of a toothpaste like tube which doesn't need heat Destinations are a fake, the adventure is everything! Jorg Schlagheck (Cyclist Vlogger)
High level cirrus clouds will not lock in the heat, it takes low level cumulus clouds to do that. You experienced a major temperature change from day to night. Your reasoning escapes me.
I live my adventures thru Sintax 77 …

Having watched pretty much all your videos, and as always I appreciate your efforts in doing the hikes and the videography.....this was not exactly a "wowzer" in scenery...or interest. It did get me through 300 calories on the exercise bike, but barely..... At least it wasn't the muddy Dolly Sods woods and such that you do often.

I had an epiphany backpacking in the desert. Why carry dehydrated food AND the water to rehydrate it. Just carry regular food and skip dehydrated and stove in the desert.
