My "useless" philosophy degree | VLOG

This is a clickbait title, sort of. Everyone will tell you that a degree in philosophy is 'useless'. "What are you gonna do with that?" they'll say. During my annual trip to SUNY Oneonta for alumni weekend, I discuss how important studying philosophy was to my career in magic and speaking. Click SHOW MORE for links.

I think there are a lot of misconceptions about a philosophy major. It can actually go very far in life. You can use a philosophy degree as a great platform into a career in science and engineering. It has transformed how mathematicians think and how scientists deal with the technical facets of reality. The beauty behind the numbers is what is taught in philosophy and it is an advantageous perspective to enter jobs like data science and quantitative analysis, which are excellent-paying jobs for any fresh graduate these days.

Hi Brian, after graduating with a 2:1 in Philosophy I fell into one of worst sorts of ruts but eventually emerged out of the other side. However, as I was putting my life back together I got back in contact with an old class mate from high school. He had gone off to do Programming and has now found himself in an intensive research project for Imperial College London - prestigeous world wide for AI and medicine. When he came back he was mocking my degree choice, constantly asking whether I was proud of taking such a useless path in life and whether I could demonstrate to him what I had gained from the degree. I did not answer, primarily because I felt his questions were only putting me in a terrible place when I was on the verge of leaving something very serious and heart breaking behind me. I am still in contact with him but he still insists on lamenting that my degree was useless, as a 27 year old man this shouldn't bother me but I feel like I should have been able to rebut him. I wasn't, especially when confronted with an inability to get a job in any meaningful employment (at the time). In all earnest, how would you summarise the purpose of philosophy in the face of vehement empiricist badgering? More specifically, what does philosophy offer that is different from the more vocational degrees that ultimately demand the same thing - critical thinking, elegance of argument, geneological awareness etc... I suppose it falls on me to find the purpose or the 'why' but to me it was self evident in some cases. Nonetheless it would be great to get your input.

I disagree lots of philosophers are indeed concerned about answering questions but attempting to answer the question leads to many more questions. This is where analytical philosophy's goal was to make philosophy clear and concise. This is why we have a solution to the free will vs determinism problem by carefully examining what do these words mean, and we come to a conclusion that both are not reciprocals of the other but instead are two faces of the same coin and one must exists for the other to be present, sort of like magnets in nature, polar but they exists in one entity. I do think however continental philosophy is bullsh!t. This is what most people think about when you tell them about philosophy. Analytic philosophy is actually closer to science and engineering. Philosophy is sometimes badly used to debate your point, the main goal is to understand the world and ourselves.

It seems to me that analytic philosophy is fundamentally limited in its ability explain one’s subjective experiences. Although analytic philosophy is definitely more practical, it seems that reducing all of philosophy to rigid arguments and truth tables takes the humanity out of philosophy. Continental philosophy is also much more “Constructive”, relying more on concept creation and therefore becoming more expressive. For example, Heidegger’s concept of “Dasein” might not be a tangible or scientifically verifiable thing but it has quite a bit of explanatory utility when talking about what it is really like to be.
