I just discovered "Sew Over It" and am charmed. Saw your review and so thankful!!! I am especially glad you discussed the adjustments for the sleeves; I can't stand tight sleeves, especially when it rubs under my armpit. I will be doing this project!

Hi Deborah - I just found you today and think your vlogs are fab. I am now watching the rest of them as I cut out my next project...the Sew Over It Ella blouse. Like you I love to sew and have been doing so for many years. After a bit of a break I am once more enthused and loving it more than ever. LOVE the dress you are wearing! Px

First time watching your channel and I loved it! Love, love, loved your review of the shift dress. I am a MASSIVE Sew Over It fan. Have a few of their patterns and I do agree, the sleeve fittings (as when sewing the sleeve to the bodice) are a dream! I have made the Eve wrap dress with flutter sleeves and oh my goodness, it is gorgeous. Love the fabric you chose for your shift dress, and the one for your daughter is dreamy. Thank you for spending the time to review patterns. It was great fun and very useful to watch your review, I will be buying this pattern asap and will be watching out for the armscye fitting ;-) Keep those reviews coming! Carolina, from France x

Margaret Turner Yes...I would say based on all the feedback I've been getting from this vlog it seems to be a common issue not only with this pattern but a few others they have also. Having said that, I love the sleeve/armscye draft cause it goes together so nicely. I just need to be aware of any future patterns I buy from SOI cause I think the sleeve tightness will always be an issue for me. Thanks for your comment!!!

So happy to find this review and your solution! I made the sleeveless version of this dress and it's so tight under the arm also. I have read that people with narrow backs/shoulders don't have this issue. I have a small bust but the fit is good everywhere except the armscye like yours. Great to know this adjustment works as I wasn't too confident about hacking into the arm (I made my dress in Liberty so really need to rescue it!). I was hoping this would be a go-to pattern for work dresses and was so fustrated with it. I have coem across a few other people with this issue but no-one seemed to solve it. Thank you! Your dresses look lovely.

+ thank you so much for your kind comments. Yes the armhole issue is very frustrating and I'm finding out that a lot of people have had this issue with SOI patterns in general. But I do love the way their patterns are drafted so I do plan to continue to sew with them. It's nice to have a solution to the problem! sewloulou loop

Excellent review. I'm 4'10" very slightly smaller shape, I too have a shorter torso so your info on armhole is well received. I seriously need a dress like that is easy to dress up or down. Your other two makes are beautiful too, the fabrics are perfect for us petite people - we're not swamped!

Hi Deb! I just found your channel and I'm so excited that I've found it. I'm a new sewist (about a 1 1/2 years - not counting high school sewing lol) and I'm really enjoying sewing and watching sewing vlogs, I'm in Pittsburgh, PA. It's nice to find a US based sewing vloger. I've found a few others (Inside the Hem, Melly Sews, Made Everyday) but most of my favorite vlogers are in the UK (Sew Over It, Sewn, InsideNumber23, Gabberdashery, Hollie Dolly, and EVIE la LUVE to name a few). You're review was lovely, I haven't made this one yet. I've made SOI Silk Cami, (a good beginner pattern). I'm on my second Betty Dress and my next make is SOI Eve dress. I have quite a few makes in my queue, a pair of underwear from EVIE la LUVE and a jacket from Vogue #7975. Your fabric for your shift dress is lovely! I haven't really found a good place to purchase fabric in the US. Joann's is nice, but I think they are a bit disorganized. I am going to copy (I hope you don't mind) your fabric card, I'm going to add where I bought it from. Where do you get your fabric? Could be a good vlog, if you haven't already done one on that subject. I am going to go back and watch your other videos. Sorry, I didn't mean to write a book here. Happy Sewing!

Well, I'm watching your first vlog and I think you're in Canada? I also watch SewVeryEasy's vlog and she is also Canadian based. Which is still closer than the UK, so that's great, but I don't think I'll find the same fabric stores. Happy Sewing!

This is one of my favourite patterns too :) I found overall the pattern ran a little small on me - so I made it up in a light weight interlock knit which wasn't really stretchy but did allow for more ease and it fits perfectly and I wear it all the time.

I ❤️ your review. I'm similar in size, though a little taller, and don't have the bust issue. I often do an alteration under arms as I don't like that tight, restricted feeling. Hi! Really enjoyed your review of the SOI shift dress. I made the same version last year and had the same issues with the tightness under the arm. The sleeves were rather tight on me as well and felt so despondent with the whole pattern I decided I would never make it again 😟 but your alterations to the pattern have made me decide to give it another go. I've learnt such a lot in a year of dressmaking that I can make the right adjustments for a better fit, so thank you for pointing me in the right direction! Your hemline is perfect, show off your legs because you can!!

+Liz Cole - The adjustment really worked well for me and ended up having to do the same adjustment for my daughter and also a girlfriend who I helped make the dress. In all three instances it worked out brilliantly. So I definitely think you should give it another go! Let me know if you do and how it turned out :-)

Great review! Thank you! I wish I had discovered your video before having sewn two "Ultimate Shift dresses", because I have the same issue with tight armholes. I also feel the fabric pulling in the back area when I bring my arms forward and the sleeves are tight, although the cap feels right. Otherwise, it's a very easy and quick sewing project and I will definitely make more Ultimate Shift Dresses, after following your advice about grading up in the specific area.

Yes you should!! Just be warned that the sleeve draft is tight but if you size up in the armscye and sleeve cap you should be ok. Thanks for your comment!!

Love your dresses. I did make the dress and had the same issue in the arm area. I will try grading up to the next size as you did with my next dress. Do you think it would work with a jersey such as Ponte de Roma? What kind of elastic did you use? I had a problem with the hook and eye opening so I made a thread loop and button which I liked a lot. I would like to try the elastic the next time.

+Jo-Ann Bousquet - I think Ponte would be a great fabric to try this in. If you do it let me know how it turns out! I used 1/8 inch elastic for the neck closure.

Great review Thankyou for this. I am making the Sew Over It Pussy Bow Blouse and have the same problem with the sleeve/arm hole being tight I scaled out the armhole bt not the sleeve so will do that next time. I thought I just had fat arms lol. I did make a toile of the Shift dress and my sleeves didn't fit at all took me 3 days to realise I had cut out the back and front of the sleeveless version ! I am going to give it another go :)

Your dress is adorable and fits you beautifully !! You can’t go wrong with a shift dress. Did you use interfacing?

  • @sewyyc1234

    @sewyyc1234

I used a very light interfacing to give some structure to the facing without making the fluidity of the fabric to stiff.

The instructions don’t mention anything about interfacing. I have this dress cut out and ready to sew. Thank you for the quick reply.

I wanted one more go with the ultimate shift dress pattern before I gave up due to bad fit of previous attempts ! I was so inspired by your vlog that I drafted up a dress using your sleeve alterations. In my haste to sew up a muslin, I cut the back on the fold and forgot to cut in half. This added the seam allowance (3cm) into the back width as I made it up without back seam or split. The fit was the great ! Thank you so much. I have enjoyed catching up on your past vlogs and look forward to watching many more.

Great video. I can so relate as I am "petite" with almost identical measurements...just 20 years older! Have the pattern but have delayed trying it as I have been having so much fun with the Heather dress from Sewoverit. Just got some "scuba" fabric for another Heather. Has anyone ever worked with scuba. Have any tips?

I was interested in your review. Strangely I found the sleeve didn't go in well at all🤔Other than that I've made it twice but have redrafted a sleeve to fit better and I gave an extra 5/8 in the back seam. On a Sewoverit course the teacher said it's very narrow at the shoulders. Having said that I love the pattern and plan to make it in Viscose/ rayon or crepe.🤗
