Great vid! I’d love to share a “hack” for Console 1 that makes it sound amazing… I worked on an SSL Duality for my day job for YEARS while still maintaining a home studio. In an attempt to get my home mixing environment as close as possible to the $250k console at work I brought my console 1 in and tried to get it to match. What I discovered was a “dimension” issue; there was “flatness”/reduction in 3D depth in the box. I determined that this was mostly due to the added artificial harmonics. These harmonics attempt to emulate analog “tone” but actually digitizes the soundstage of your signal. Ironically, console 1 sounds(“feels”) WAAAAYYYY more analog when you bypass the “console emulation” part of their algorithm. Through experimentation I realized that their Weiss Gambit channel was SO much more “open” sounding, like the real console… I guess b/c that emulation is pretty much precision clean… little to zero harmonics added & as a result everything just sounds way more 3D with that strip. So: Even if you want the SSL processing, select the Gambit strip as a starting position and then replace the individual sections with the SSL or API etc processor. Demo the Weiss Gambit and a/b it for yourself… closest to analog in the box I’ve heard (with hardware control). That said, none of the C1 channel strip compressors come close to their hardware counterparts in my opinion… I bought the germanium compressor separate; to my ears it captures the attitude and transients much closer to hardware 👍 The Gambit strip sounds incredible btw, on vocals, bass, synth etc it beats the hell out of the other strips. The high frequencies are magical. I still love the “papery” & snappy SSL EQ & “chunky” Neve EQ on other instruments. Ultimately, within the Console 1 workflow the closest match to out SSL Duality was: Weiss Gambit strip SSL E Gate/Transient design section SSL 9000 EQ Chandler Germanium Compressor (The Empirical labs channel strip comp. Is great too and uses less CPU… not quite as “vivid” as the germanium but it’s not “spongey” like the other C1 comps. And DO try to have an stereo analogue compressor or preamps somewhere on the master. It really does take your sound to another league. If you can’t afford that, grab something from acustica… even one of their free plugins, that’ll get ya remarkably close. I hope this helps someone! 🫡

Good to know. Thanks. Also, have you found C1 to work fine if you're using analog hardware as inserts on tracks etc.? Just wondering if that creates any issues with the functioning of C1.

Its very interesting but heavier on cpu. I need a new processor.

So glad I found your channel. Your workflow is like mine, but considerably more evolved. Your review added plenty of detail with Pros and Cons that I’ve not seen covered in other reviews. Super valuable and helpful. Thank you!

Very dope track. It was recorded really well but you can definitely hear the punch and midrange comes alive after the mix. I absolutely love my console 1. I mix in cubase since logic wasn’t 100 percent compatible when I started with the console 1. It is surprising how little content there is for the console 1 considering how many of us use it. I have yet to learn the controller fully to do things such as rearranging tracks and things like that. I just use the mouse in the daw for that but I’ve seen people group tracks really quickly using it somehow .

Yeah there is alot of secondary functions with the shift button, I dont use it to its full extent but when ever its live music i always pull it out.

I've found the ssl 9000k best for rap rnb sample based music. It has the deepest low end and very clean midrange and sparkly top end. With my experiments between the consoles the Neve is the stands out for acoustic/guitar type music, the lowend is fat and tight the mid range stands out in a nice 3d way and the high end is not overly bright. It also has the best drive knob which adds the best sounding saturation. The Neve is the closest to what you would expect mixing in a console would sound like. I use Console one in a hybrid way though, i use the neve eq for the sound but use fabfilter q3 for sound shaping and cuts, the 4000e for compression and the dynamic shape gate section and the Neve for the filter and output section. It so much quicker getting the mix done on console one.

Appreciate the review. What confused me is that you had the snare SO MUCH louder on your 9000k mix, made it hard to compare. You're probably right about the gate-section and the compressor not having a side-chain-function is not great for (in the box) production neither. Still, turning knobs is fun. Will have to think about this some more.

Ive tried the mixer unit! Ive been producing more than mixing these days so it wouldn't be as handy to me. But it feel nice it depends what daw you use for how useful the whole system together is.

How does Console 1 work with integrating hardware with your mixing? Like, if you want to run an API hardware eq on your drum bus, does it allow you to do that or is it only plugins? Obviously I know you couldn't control the hardware with Console 1. I just want a hybrid setup and if using a bunch of outboard gear with Console 1 causes a nightmare, it wouldn't be worth it to me. Thanks.

It is the MK2. You can see it on the screen printing. It has printed the "Sends" under the pots for "Drive", "Character" and "Pan". MK1 didn't have this. But it doesn't matter. They are the same. One is just manufactured in Sweden (MK1) and the other in China. Functions and software are the same
