I wish they kept in the scene where Camila helps Daisy get into her hotel room after the band's last performance and convinces her to go to rehab. The book did a better job with showing that Camila still admired Daisy and wanted the best for her.

Totally agree. The fact that they added in a "hands off my man" kinda fight between the two when if i remember correctly there isn't one in the book also rubbed me the wrong way. I really appreciated how Camilla in the book was kind but firm about this to Daisy, almost like a big sister, essentially saying "hey, this thing with you and my husband isn't gonna happen, but you're amazing and deserve better than pining after someone who's never gonna be available and destroying yourself in the process." Sadly this didn't really come accross in the show

i think the direction they went with in the series is how daisy was the one to realize that she wanted an out. camila had influences that made her do it, but ultimately daisy was the one who made the choice. in the book, camila was technically the main catalyst.

As a child of divorce watching my mom essentially burning all bridges with my dad who cheated on her and married his affair partner, I welcomed this change. It's more realistic. Camila should be upset.

one particular change the show made that rubbed me the wrong way was the erasure of daisy’s ED. i don’t think i would’ve been as upset about it had it been removed all together, but instead they took a very important scene from the book- where billy takes daisy for burgers and realized she only eats, at most, once a day and gets stressed when faced with eating more- and turned it into a very manic pixie dream girl scene where she orders two burgers for herself and billy thinks she’s so cool because? she eats? i guess? in the book, her very apparent ED felt like cracks in her perfect persona. it showed her hidden fear and sadness not only to the audience but to billy after he notices. she states multiple times that as long as she was skinny, things would be okay. to change this scene in particular feels like they didn’t care as much about making daisy a sympathetic character, just the cooler option for billy.

  • @christenpotvin

I might be wrong about this but I don't think an ED is ever really emphasized? I interpreted it as a byproduct of her drug addiction (as uppers, like cocaine, reduce appetite and she partakes constantly).

@@christenpotvin Personally, i think it was very heavily implied. she was always cold, very thin, billy says himself she only ate once a day. she got upset when he tried to offer her more food. she says herself multiple times all she cares about is making music and staying skinny. karen mentions that when she had left the country before the aurora tour that she had lost even more weight, which was scary because she had none to lose.

@@christenpotvin that is still an eating disorder tho, if you develop extremely unhealthy eating patterns as a by-product of another illness such as depression or addiction it is still an eating disorder. graham and karen’s dialogue was SO odd to me. it felt lazy at a lot of points, and the scene where graham gets mad at billy for being so self centered after karen’s abortion would’ve been SO GOOD in the show. I also agree they did not show enough of camila and billy’s chemistry in the show. he spoke so highly of her and she referenced times when they were just happy together even while daisy was a part of their lives. the show made it feel rushed, like daisy came in and screwed it up immediately and camila and billy were never really that strong which is so upsetting.

i so agree about the interviews not being involved enough!! in the book there's not just different character interpretations of each other, but also moments where they'll remember dates of a concert or dialogue completely differently. i was so ready to see those in the adaptation--like, the same scene filmed two different ways--and they didn't use it at all, which was disappointing. it's ignoring one of the main Points of The Story imo, that whole "the truth often lies unclaimed in the middle" bit. edit: lol i wrote this watching like the first three minutes and you mention all of it later haha

I haven't read the book yet, but the characters having a completely different recolection of certain events is so interesting and rings SO true to how bands are in real life. Like, it's so common for former members of disbanded groups to spend the decades after debunking what the others have said in interviews, writing memoirs where the anecdotes are completely different, and so on. I really wish they would have done that in the adaptation.

I haven't seen the show yet, but as someone who was so into the himym fandom and was so angry after the trash ending, my reaction to the ending of DJat6 book was actually "this is himym's ending done right" I felt the book portrayed two different but valid loves for Billy (neither of which were better than the other) and a great deal of respect and understanding from all sides of the love triangle as they deal with the cards fate has played them. Contrast this to himym where they did not treat Tracy and Robin the same and changed the entire tone of the story to fit his excuse happy ending which any writers with a base understanding of the characters would know would make no one happy anyway.

i particularly disliked how they handled camila and billy's relationship in the show, making it seem like billy is with her out of obligation. they get married when she gets pregnant, not because billy actually proposes because he simply wants to marry her. while i'm not a fan of their relationship (or billy in general lmao) in the book you can tell they truly love each other and i feel that billy's love for camila and their children is his redeeming quality, because otherwhise he's a selfish jerk. also hate that in the show we do see billy and daisy reunite, i feel like it's better in the book that we don't really know if he calls her or not. all this said, i've read a bunch of tjr's books and dj&ts is the one i like the least, my favourites are the seven husbands of evelyn hugo and malibu rising!

I re-watched the Interview With The Vampire show after I finished Daisy Jones and I kept getting mad about how easily that show integrated the idea of an unreliable narrator into the show to create suspense and intrigue, and I feel like Daisy Jones could've gone from okay-ish to amazing if they had leaned into that aspect. I felt like they ruined Billy sobriety and everything he had been working towards after rehab; in the book he never cheated on Camila again after he got out AND Billy and Daisy never kiss, Daisy is the one to lean in but Billy shuts it down. but then in the show they have Billy kiss her over a song... And after Teddy dies they have him get drunk and high but in the book he only takes a sip or 2 of alcohol I'm pretty sure. I also didn't like how they changed the ending performance, because to me the book's final performance was incredibly emotional yet powerful but the ending of the tv show isn't and when the show started it almost seemed like there was bad blood between Billy and Daisy from the way he spoke about her. I also don't love how they tweaked Camila's relationship with Billy. I feel like in the book she was more of a force to be reckoned with, she wasn't telling Billy if he falls in love with Daisy it's over or having a scream conversation with Daisy about Billy always choosing Camila over her. Camila just felt more assured of herself in the book to me.

i definitely agree that the unreliable narrator was utilized better in the novel, and to me really serves to let the reader understand the perspectives of each member of, not only the band, but the love triangle better. the show had the opportunity to do narration in a non-cringey and canonical way (documentaries LOVE narration), which could have let the viewer really immerse themselves in the minds of the characters on screen outside of the acting. one example that comes to mind would have been during the feelings of daisy and billy during the first song writing session. i felt like daisy-in-real-time saying how obviously she admired billy was out of character bc daisy knows firsthand how bad men can get when she validates them like that. but having her say it in retrospect would allow the feelings to be clear while remaining in-character. agreed a lot with what you said, esp about the karen-graham relationship reveal scene which was SO awkwardly worded good lord. great video as always!

What I like about the book and hate about the series is that it doesn't leave the spaces gray. As in the book, it is the opinion of all band members about certain events and controversial, implying that they may be lying or omitting facts. The 70's for a rock band was messy, vicious and noxious but very glamorous and heady that doesn't show in the series. It was very clean and positive for me, and reading the book it was more raw and sometimes even pessimistic. I expected a report of the decade closer to what they did with Mad Men or even the incredible Almost Famous.

As someone who has studied the 60s, 70s and 80s extensively, there are many problems with this show. The wardrobe choices seem more like costumes than clothes that people actually wore at the time. The atmosphere feels almost like a KZread video with a filter on it to emulate the 70s. The band itself was a lazy copycat Fleetwood Mac, sans everything that made Fleetwood Mac as iconic as they are. Overall it's an otiose attempt at imitating one of the most colourful and exciting periods of history that makes the era itself seem dull and indolent. If you're looking for a show that does the scene-setting of years passed well, I'd suggest The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. It's set in the 50s and 60s, but it does a.. well- marvelous- job capturing the spirit of the time. i’m glad there’s someone else other than my sister who drew the HIMYM parallel. i’m on neither team and think that both couples work in different ways, it’s push and pull and i see it in a twin flame vs soulmates situation. they’re too different to be comparable. daisy and billy clash because they are similar and see each other for who they are, but billy and camilla decide to choose each other, even if billy is cruel in how slow on the uptake he is about it. i think it would’ve been far better to leave it being an open ended “what if” for billy and daisy, the way those relationships often are. if we were going to progress past the interviews, i would much rather have had a scene with camilla and daisy making amends with each other. daisy made the band famous, but she almost destroyed a marriage and herself in the process, and a debrief with camilla and julia would’ve been cathartic. anyway that’s my take, as someone who hasn’t read the book but definitely plans to

another himym comparison could be drawn from the ted-robin-barney and daisy-billy-camilla love triangles. Ted and Robin share a very deep connection and love for each other, which is what pushes them to always fight for their relationship even though odds are against them, just like Billy and Camilla. Meanwhile Robin and Barney are two dysfuctional and very similar people (like daisy and billy) and its their similarity that helps them understand each other better and last longer than ted and robin. I would say the main difference between the two lies on Billy genuinely wanting to become the man that -he thinks- Camilla deserves, while Robin isn't willing to change her dreams to be with Ted even though she loves him. Maybe this is a bit of a strech considering Billy's internal conflict wasn't just about choosing to be there for his family or follow his career, but had also a lot to do with his addiction, but I think the similarities are enough to draw the comparison

I did enjoy Chuck’s character use in the book, even though it was brief. I understand why they may not have wanted to draw on the war themes (*ahem*) but I feel like his death helped drive home how lucky the band was. It’s drawn on more in the book Billy’s guilt over not working his life away at the mill or being drafted and dying like the guys he grew up with. It also makes Eddie’s unhappiness in the band feel even more privileged. And the idea that people can have everything they ever hoped for and still wind up angry and unfulfilled. Also just liked how Chuck was described as this clean cut guy, but then is more into the rockstar lifestyle. I thought it gave a glimpse into an interesting dynamic with how the other members talked about him. Maybe I read too much into it but I feel like more could have been done with him even in the book. There is a fondness with which they talk about Chuck (which makes sense given his death obviously) but also shows that golden period of when the band was just starting out. I guess all of this suffers from how compact that initial start of the band is in both the book and show.

i haven seen a single comment about eddie. i hated show eddie (not for being a fusion of book pete and eddie but) because he just seemed like a jerk. I thought it was much more subtle in the book how eddie just took billy’s orders and started to get tired. he never stoke me as spotlight hungry, just someone who wanted his thoughts heard by his own bandmates. he was supposed to showcase how painful billys controlling persona could get to others, not (kinda?) reinforce how talented billy is and how no one can reach his level (by having eddie be an unsuccessful musician at the end)

I would definitely be interested in hearing your review of Evelyn Hugo; I read it a few years ago and while I enjoyed parts of it I had a few gripes I never see anyone mention, namely that I found the characters kind of one dimensional. It’s not a spoiler to say it’s framed around an interview of an elderly woman, and she feels sometimes like a mouthpiece for the writer in a kind of on-the-nose “I’m going to make a point” way. The character defects were more tell than show which made them less nuanced, and the voices didn’t feel distinct and realistic enough for me. That said I might be misremembering slightly and would be curious to hear your thoughts! So glad I rediscovered your videos with this one. :)

i loved the show up until the ending, like it just revealed so many problems with it all for me. like i feel like it was just too short snd they tried to do too much with what little time they were given. daisy hardly interacts with the members of the band outside of billy so she always ends up feeling like an outsider especially after she marries that dude whose name i don't remember. that would be fine if that's what they were going for but at the end when she's talking about how much she's gonna miss them and its like bitch do you even know eddie's name? they did a really good job at building tension in the last episode and you can feel it all going to shit but like its hard to feel any real sense of loss there bc they never feel like a cohesive group. and when i say cohesive i don't mean they all need to get along bc obvi the show is about the drama and mess but the drama and mess can only happen if they care about each other and like i think they could have very easily left warren behind at hotel and not noticed at one point. and I'm with you, I'm a fan of a love triangle but you gotta do them justice and i feel like the love triangle was a big problem for the writers. they had to dedicate so much time to it to the detriment of building a solid general band relationship as mentioned but like also they didn't really have enough time to do either camilla/billy or daisy/billy any justice. i really liked the start of billy and camillas relationship, i understood why they were together and saw that they loved each other but after his bender i fucking hated him and wanted to see how they were gonna rebuild their relationship and after that point it never felt like he loved her as a person but only as the mother of his child. they then dedicate so much time to daisy and billys relationship and yes he loves her bc she's messy but also there's like a passion there and you hardly see him with camilla anymore and when you do its with julia or their fighting about their marriage. yes they give camilla more agency by getting with eddie but they still just did the whole like nag wife vs the sexy passionate affair which is still just fucking lazy unless you end it well. they tried to subvert it by having him choose camilla but it falls flat particularly with the backdrop of his trouble with addiction. it feels like billy chooses camilla bc shes the safe option and its the right thing to do. it was so fucking insulting that they thought they'd earned the "its always been camilla" moment when like the past 5 episodes have been dedicated to daisy and billy with camilla in the background watching her husband slip away. and then they fucking kill her so daisy and bill can be together, fucking great. and its also insulting as fuck to daisy. like yeah she gets to be the exciting option but its clear the thing they were going for is the only billy that would choose her over camilla is a billy that's destructive to both daisy and himself. she only gets billy dunn at his worst or if his wife is dead, fucking great. like i had started to warm back up to billy after the whole cheating and bender thing but that ending had me out for his blood. god that was long, no one will read this, i just have had feelings about this show for a while and nowhere to out them and its a shame bc i actually really liked it, i just wish it were better.

In the end I was completely team Camila (not with Billy, just her, she truly deserved better than him and what he made her go through) because Daisy and Billy are both extremely annoying and obnoxious they would deserve each other but for the wrong reasons. my biggest gripe with the show i think, dealt mostly with characters linking to camilla. eddie's crush on her i hated, her hooking up with him instead of a spanish (i believe?? i can't remember exactly) man which felt a lot more impactful to who she was (he wasn't a rockstar, and he was the stable domestic life she could've had, had she broken up with billy when he and the band left), and daisy's and billy's relationship being unambiguous, and expecitly sexual at that. maybe i missed something in the book, but i always interpreted the 'did they didn't they?' as they committed emotional adultery with maybe one heat of the moment kiss, rather than a physical adultery. camila was way more annoying and less strong in the tv show i found; in fact, all the characters felt like characatures of themselves -which is kind of ironic that the show feels like a biopic, where that almost always happens.

i love camila but i do think that she’s much more complex than what we’ve seen in the show she’s not just the loving and devoted wife she can be bossy and manipulative it’s clear that one of the reasons for which she decides to stay with billy through all the cheating is that she sees his talent, she knows he’s going to be a star, and she wants that kind of life, that kind of family why does she ask daisy to leave the band and go to rehab after their last concert? was she really worried about daisy, or did she just want to get rid of a rival? is it a coincidence that we never hear her version of what happened that night? is that why she wrote that final email to her daughters, because she felt guilty that she didn’t allow daisy and billy to have their shot?

i enjoyed the show over all. the music is great. but i definitly did not feel the same way about characters in the show as i did with their original versions. show didn't explore karen and graham relationship almost at all. and i hated how much focus was on billy and daisy. in the book it was obvious that billy loved camila and was fighting with his feeling for daisy for the family. in the show however camila is showned to be more of a second best thing. really glad they decided not to have camila and billy have two more children bc it would've been an awful decision with how they decided to portray this love triangle. the lack of the unreliable narator was also upsetting since it's such a big part of the book i know they are considering making season 2 now and i'm not sure i want that to happen

  • @lenusniq_9746

Disclaimer: I didn't watch the show. I agree with you - Camilla and Karen were also my most favourite characters. And I loved their friendship in the book. I have a conspiracy theory that Camilla wasn't so sweet and it's supported by the fact that Karen said something similar when she shared the "innocent" story of Camilla preparing them a breakfast. Maybe that's why I (uncharacteristically for me) prefer the "mommy character" to "femme fatale character". And there it goes - I didn't really like Daisy. NOT because of the love triangle thing but b/c how entitled she seemed and how badly she treated Simone.... Also Karen and Graham relationship seemed more interesting that Billy and Daisy... but that's just my take. I love how Karen said that maybe if the marriage was more egalitarian in the 70s (as it is now), things could have ended differently. Also Camilla playing matchmaker at the end was too much....

You are sooo right though, it IS a tall order to ask for a chart topping album written specifically for this show but like.... rumours would eat aurora whole and then play its ribs like a xylophone. so many songs are repetitive and forgettable and frankly, toothless. the show goes "waaa it's a number one album/single/song" etc and I kept going uhhh where. why. how 😂 also same with riley keough and her acting - so many scenes fell flat for me bc of her. at some point the show was all "the crowd goes wild every time daisy moves", I mean... why though. I'd find it much more believable if simone was the one getting mega famous, nabiyah be has a MUCH stronger energy and stage presence.

Well, I knew something bothered me about the ending (both book and tv show) but until you just said "How I met your mother", I hadn't connected those two. And you're totally right fyi. HIMYM is one of my favorite TV sitcoms of all time and I own it all on DVD, however; I've only watched the original end when it was broadcast. When I bought the DVDs it came with an alternative ending which is the only one I've re-watched for the past decade. By the time I read "Daisy Jones and the six" for the first time in 2019, I'd deleted that HIMYM original end from my brain cells 😂 Now, the show adaptation is vanilla in my opinion, I was expecting Amazon -since they produce "The Boys" - to greenlight a more adult content version of the book, one that really screamed "Sex, drugs and rock and roll" but this wasn't it for me. A wasted opportunity 🙄

I'm a big fan of the series. The authentic nature of recording the music at Spund City the sheer quality of that music and the casting choices. I didn't and haven't read the book which I understand deviates a little from the Amazon series. Karen/ Suki Waterhouse is unbelievable and I'm surprised there wasn't a little competition for her to be lead singer. Riley/ Daisy is amazing in her own right. As are the male cast. Sam/ Billy is every bit an echo of Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence from Inxs. Teddy Price was my favourite male character and of course earth angel Suki my favourite female in this series. The sets like Teddy's house were awesome. A firm five stars from me. Camilla was a wonderful wife to Billy despite his very predictable love of Daisy.

Billy is an awful person, and Daisy is not much better. I felt bad for Camilla while reading the book so I ended up shelving it. Every time I see a commercial for the show I always just want to watch it, but it just makes me sick. But, I think there’s a fix which could have been more fun and been a great spot to enhance the tension about the unreliable narration without having to present “what if that’s happen” or anything like that. With this, we would have felt more anticipation for what we were going to see or not going to see without feeling cheated, which is really fun, and would have made the interviews more interesting. So, the fix is: you just only keep the idea of who named the band in the interviews. Don't show "the truth." I mean, with this plot point, there isn't a lot of weight - unlike Billy's infidelity - we don’t need to know what really happened. The arguments between the recollections are more interesting. If anything, we might even keep looking between the interviews to see if we can spot who was more unreliable - Karen and Eddie, so we could figure out who actually named the band. But, either way, it’s the band’s name, right? So, it’s low stakes and we don't feel cheated. It could have even become a fan theory which would have given the show life after. But, yeah, fun and easy fix.

I am obsessed with the series on prime. I am totally lost trying to figure out the story of Daisy and her daughter. I have to assume that is a cliffhanger that will be resolved in a second season. I so wish for a second season!!!

the only reason i appreciate look my in the eye is because they're kinda cringy, which really suits where billy was in his life and musical career. people giving it crap need to stop taking it so seriously 😂

One thing that really bothered me was how Mary Sue the band was: Like, in the novel Daisy has good songs, but they're something you would probably listen to at a shooping mall and never research again, whereas the show tries to tell you over and over again how she is basically the Picasso of musical composition; and, probably one of the changes I HATED the most, The Six already had two albums out before "Aurora" that were their "Debut" and "Seven Eight Nine" which weren't as powerful as their third, but had been comercial success and even Honeycomb was from their second album, not from Aurora, same as Daisy who had her own debut album out, so making Aurora their first and only album that inmediatly went viral and then trying to convince the watcher that they were actually the best band of the 70´s is a bit...too ridiculous. I know that it was probably difficult for them to make two full albums, but if they wrote songs for Simone and The Dune Brothers, they could've actually put a bit more of work into making their path to fame a bit more belivable.

it’s so sad bc you can tell the actors put their absolute ALL into their roles just for the show to be so mediocre compared to the book

Railey is so loving and sweet. She is very talented and humble. I liked the series, she definitely shines. Camila, on the other hand, seems to be always posing, it's annoyng. In the shots she is always in a posed attitude, not relaxed but as if she was checking that she looks good and that makes her lose authenticity and spontaneity. Riley on the other hand is an actress who shows herself as she is, she gives depth to the characters, she makes them complex and you can connect with them.
