My TRUTH, My STORY - Dominique Jackson

"My TRUTH, My STORY", is the Caribbean Equality Project's multimedia storytelling campaign, which reflects and shares authentic unspoken stories of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) people of Caribbean heritage. These experiences, struggles and achievements are the driving force behind the storytellers’ personal growth. “My TRUTH, My STORY" aims to unveil, liberate and unchain victims from a culture of silence and fear. The Caribbean Equality Project is dedicated to revising the oppressive cycle of colonized and institutionalized teachings, in order to create a sustainable and progressive community free of violence and all forms of discrimination. In order to achieve this goal, we aim at promoting visibility and empowerment through powerful messages of self-acceptance, love, respect, renewal and hope.
One of our primary outlets, the ongoing video series, will serve as a useful resource to promote networks of support for Caribbean LGBTQ individuals who are struggling with issues inclusive of, but not limited to: coming out, family acceptance, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, physical and mental health problems, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. These LGBTQ individuals tend to lack supportive and safety networks, and as such, they serve as one of our main focus. We celebrate our participants’ courage, diversity, and strength to stand in their own light through their vulnerability. In doing so, they can live their truth fearlessly; with the hope of igniting thought-provoking dialogue on issues that affect the Caribbean LGBTQ community.

    I am a 60 year old straight white woman who has the utmost respect and admiration for this woman. She has a phenomenal message about living her truth. My 35 year old son came out as gay when he was 15 and I've always admired his bravery in doing so. It's still scary for me to know that he is navigating this world with the hate that exists for people who dare to live an honest existence rather than what may seem like a safer existence, but I wouldn't want him to do anything different. I've known of and heard the stories of a lot of people with gender identification struggles but Dominique's story has given me the greatest understanding of how important living the truth is because of the lengths she has taken to be the person she was born to be. I realize that the greatest truth I can live is to have faith in and support other people who live their truth, without question.

  • @jenniferloftus2363

    @jenniferloftus2363

    3 жыл бұрын

    Let me reassure you that the fact that your son came out at 15 is part of the reason it is safer for him to be out at 35. Every one of us who stood up and said we are here, we are queer, get used to it added one more voice to a symphony that couldn't be ignored. We turned out to be more than just a joke on late night tv. It was easier to hate when there were less visibly out people. There are still people who disown their kids or hate their family members for being gay but it's not socially acceptable to do that any longer. It's a stunning reversal, but it's a great evolution, if that makes sense. You used to be encouraged to hate queer and trans folk, but now that has changed. The country is changing so quickly that some want to pump the brakes but it's too late. They lost the cultural war and they're losing the legal wars now. The act of identification was a courageous act of resistance. We have to remember to stay visible and stay vigilant because hate still stalks us, but every person like your son helps hold the door open to love. The majority walk through it, which is a wonderful thing.

    Beautiful Beautiful story! Please Please Forgive me DO NOT chop my head off. i'm just a little slow. Anyone else a little confused or lost? Around the part of her story about her childhood, hitting puberty and growing breast instead of going through what thee othe boys were going through. Her family not speaking on what she really was all along/unbinding her breast?????? I was VERY VERY confused and lost. I was waiting for the answer as of to why she grew the breast at the early age. I was thinking she was going to tell us maybe she was some sort of hermaphrodite or something of the sort. But she wasnt and she later took the harmons to trans. So I was just waiting for that reveal that never came or added up.... I love the story and streangth. I was born a women and she has me beat on looks hands down!

Ive never heard it broke down like that before. The truth in that statement is so profound. I still have my relationship with my God but as for going to a so call temple...i will pass. A lot of the subjects displayed in the series I had never given a second thought to as a cis gendered woman. I must say, that it has opened my eyes to the reality that although cis gendered women face dificulties in today's society, our fellow transgender women face a whole other level of difficulties that I had never even dreamed of. I am so proud of the actors/actresses who portrayed their talents on this show and opened my eyes to different realities. My favorite character was Elektra and I must say Dominique hs tremendous acting talent! I will always follow and support her from now on. @@mariahyohannes I would say no. Trinidad like any other country island has a deep rooted history in Religion, hence the reason we cannot really be described predominantly as anyone and most operator here. And as is endemic to most religious societies is a misconception of gay life and culture and at the pinnacle Transgender people. I say all that to say yes but it's not the same as other places. I have not seen an attack gay persons physically unless gays were making passes at them. Cyber attacks, verbal attacks and public shaming is extremely common though even by other in the society.
