    @@emily227 well, I've already chosen my HL subjects (Math, Chemistry and Biology) and for SL (History, English B and French A) but I think it would be better for me to replace Chemistry or Math by English B HL. The thing is, I love Math but I don't know if it is more difficult to have as HL than Chemistry. So I am currently having a dilemma, do you have any advices ? Sorry, if it may burden you...

  • @emily227

    @emily227

    @@_.nastou._ No worries at all! I love helping. Personally, I would say English HL is easier than chemistry HL. But, it can be different for you due to you having different strengths and weaknesses. For English, both SL and HL students write a literary analysis of a previously unseen prose passage or poem. However, SL students write in response to two guiding questions, whereas HL students write a literary commentary with no assistance from guiding questions. So, it depends on you, do you think you'll need assistance from those guiding questions? Think about how good you are at thinking on the spot and writing. For chemistry HL, the content may be harder to understand at first, but the questions on the exam are more predictable and practicable!

    Hey! So for French be sure to practice a lot, such as listening to podcasts, youtube videos, reading articles, it isn't something you can just study for the week before. Also be sure to learn some key words based on the units. I remember there being 5 main units from the textbook - well-being, sustainability and some other ones. If I was targeting the theme of sustainability for example, I might learn words like "climate change", "organic", "renewable", "energy" etc etc. Also some phrases such as "keeping the environment clean is important." Also learn 3 new words everyday cause it can be hard when doing the writing if you don't know what words mean and also it's hard to recognize the word in listening tests if you don't even know what they mean. Hope this helps!

    @@AvocadoJas thanks for letting me know! Just took a look. So I think first you should read the "understandings" and "applications" at the beginning of each section. They'll give you an idea of what points to focus on and keep an eye out for when reading the chapter, and also usually test questions are written based off of those understandings! You can quickly skim every chapter first and see which areas seem to be more important, before diving deeper into those specific areas. You can also try to focus on first sentences and text features for main ideas of each paragraph or section as you read. These often contain the main idea, while the other sentences in the paragraph provide support and details. And highlight! Highlight important relevant points which you can look back on. Skip the tok sections if you have to. For writing notes, maybe finish an entire section or page before taking notes. When you do take notes, keep them brief, focus on main ideas, and put them in your own words. Oh yeah, like I mentioned in the video, check our bioninja! They have very explicit and concise key points for every main understanding/syllabus point. They also clearly show you the skills you need, for ex: "drawing of the ultrastructure of prokaryotic cells based on electron micrographs". So when studying, make sure you know how to label an ultrastructure of prokaryotic cells, as well as a short description of what each part does. I usually use textbooks to reinforce my knowledge and read details, I start with youtube videos, class notes and bioninja to get a broad, base understanding first. Hope everything I said here helps :)

    for chemistry, you should check out Richard Thornley's KZread Channel, for IB literature, to study I would make notes on main themes from each book and any similar themes, also i remember for IB lit there was a poetry analysis thing that you had to write an essay about, for this I would think of 5 things my main paragraphs could be about beforehand that are applicable to almost any question, then pick 3 for my essay.

    @@emily227 Thanks so so much! I'm going to follow your tips for sure! btw, I am still in myp cause in our school we do IB literally every year, starting from pyp 1 to dp 2 or something like that. I will be taking French as my 2nd language. I am studying in hk that's why Chinese is a required subject for us to take. I am pretty fluent since I myself am Chinese, but the problem is everything i study outside of school doesn't get tested in assessments and the most i can manage is like a 5-7 on avg for most subjects (like out of 8). I want to improve but i have absolutely no textbooks/the textbooks i find are way too out of range so no matter how hard I study, i can't get a perfect/A+ kinda thing on every test i do, which is kinda frustrating.. I did try searching stuff up but then on top of all that textbook problem, our maths and science teachers barely teach anything during lessons and I can't find any good textbooks covering what we will be tested on in those subjects, as well as the main points.. so i have to blindly take my notes :,D Do you have any websites or stuff to help me improve on my mathematics? I will get a textbook like you said from amazon etc and practice of course!
