My Top 5 EDC Fountain Pens in 2022

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

EDC or everyday carry pens come with their own set of expectations and characteristics. For me - these pens must be reliable, work with not the best paper, be durable, and perform as flawlessly as possible. In other words, these are the pens I use the most however they aren't necessarily my "best" pens or most favorite ones.
In terms of ink & nib choices, I tend to favor blue blacks in fine nibs and slightly lighter shades of green or teal in broad nibs. In addition, I tend to favor stiffer / stronger nibs for everyday carry as opposed to softer or flexier nibs.
When it comes to cost, I don't think EDC pens should be too expensive as well as there is a real chance they might get lost, stolen, or misplaced.

Great line up for EDC. I am so happy to see that Nakaya. So, I was right in predicting a Nakaya to be on your table. 🤩 BTW, I did not kniw that Jowo produces the nibs for FC. Thanks for the mention. 😊

Thank you for the video. The case looks interesting. I've found the VP/Capless to be a good everyday carry pen and if I had to choose one pen to take with me, that would be it. Especially in the matte black. Other pens which I would like to put forward for consideration are the Lamy Safari and Pilot Custom 743. The Safari is superb value and the 743 is similar to the 823 shown in the video but can make use of a cartridge converter.

I like that you show the pen failing. I have not been able to get my Mont Blanc to work consistently. I expect the pen to work 100% of the time. I have a Visconti Homosapiens that I had to have the nib slightly adjusted and it works every time now. I had the Mont Blanc nib adjusted twice and I still have hard start issues sometimes. I bought a Cheap $30 steel nib wing sung pen (the copy of the pilot custom 823) and it is the only fountain pen that has worked perfectly every time from the factory.

This is a pet peeve I have. Many expensive pens are let off the hook when they don’t do the one thing a pen is suppose do which is write. I don’t want to spend hundreds on a pen only to discover I need to send it to a nib master or order a custom feed.

Some very nice pens there. I usually EDC five pens for myself, and a sixth pen as a giveaway should the right occasion arise.. I've been carrying three of them, a Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, a Scribo Feel, and a Kaweco Brass Sport with a gold nib, for quite a while. The two more recent additions are a Namiki Chinkin, which is stunning, and a wonderful writer, and a much cheaper pen, the TWSBI 580 ALR. There are times when I want to pass a pen around to let other see what writing with a fountain pen is all about, and the 580 ALR is my choice for doing this. The giveaway pen I carry is a TWSBI ECO. It is, I think, a pretty pen, it writes very well, and it's cheap enough to give away without breaking the bank. Getting someone new hooked on fountain pens is more than worth the cost of an ECO.

For month I struggled to find the gunmetal Loom but eventually succeeded. The difficulty was due to the fact Faber-Castell discontinued the line. Or so I gleaned from trying to get the Pen from them. Lovely pen, I did not know the name of the nib. I'll keep that in mind when buying other pens with that nib. Thanks

Pilot produces the most beatiful writing! I just make more beatiful letters, with Pilot pens, than any other brand. Only some Pentel pens and mechanical pencils come close and the Faber Castell wooden pencils. I haven't find anything else, that performs better than those. So, in my opinion it's the same as cars, Mercedes is great, but we all drive mostly TOYOTA !

Although I think beautiful writing is mostly in learning the skill i.e. I have seen people write beautifully using the most common tools, like you said Pilot delivers the most performance, and their design choices, even though they are not perfect, makes the most sense for most people. I might a future video explaining this. Thanks for your comment!

@@WrexelsWorld I tested carefully side by side, all the pens and pencils I own. None wrote the same letters. Japanese mechanical pencils from Pentel, like the P205 and the Graphgear 500, as also the Pilot Precize V5 pen , was some of the best ones. Uni Jetstream Sporty, was one of the worst, the letters where so ugly and the page I filled with my writing using that pen, was like the most ugly writing I 've ever seen. Even though it depends on many factors, I noticed thta some feedback and probably a thinner tip like the 0.5mm where creating more beatiful letters and thus more beatiful overall writting. Smoother pens, like the 0.7mm UNI, where noticably smoother, but alos the worse. You can try for yourself, before judging just with mind thoeries.

If a Nakaya is cheap enough for your EDC collection, I wonder what pens aren't.

  • @WrexelsWorld

In my opinion, most fountain pens, including Nakayas, are made to be used, even daily. The only pens that I would probably not use daily are certain vintage pens and "collectible" pens e.g. Maki-e pens or certain limited edition pens which collectors buy in the hope of capital appreciation even though I know people who would use these for EDC use as well.

@@WrexelsWorld Personally, why would someone bring out of their house a high 3-figure, low 4-figure pen as an EDC item? It could be dropped, stolen, lost. My edc that I use to sign documents are Lamy fountain pens. I don't have to worry if they are dropped, lost, or stolen.

  • @WrexelsWorld

This is a very interesting point you raised. To me, there is no right or wrong answer but it really depends on your state of the collection and what you own already. I started out with Lamy Safaris, TWSBIs etc (still have them but they are used infrequently) and have moved up to higher level pens which I like more. When I prune my collection, I would naturally let pens go which I don't use. As mentioned in the video, I do realize that pens that are used everyday can be damaged, stolen, etc which is why I pick pens that are relatively strong and discreet. My pens are not for signing documents so maybe thats where the confusion is also.

@@user-gl5ld9vm7i Use them and take care of them. That seems the best option. Also, bringing your fountain pens out of your house shouldn’t be lumped into one common category. It’s not the same taking this pens to high school or taking them to your workplace where you work with two friends.
