Are you a ball-hog or a tugboat? I'm a tugboat, supporting the other boats. But once in a while someone passes me the ball.😉

I already liked you a whole helluva a lot from watching my first of your bass lessons videos, but when you invoked Mike Watt you sent me to another level. LOVE Mike Watt, Minutemen, fIREHOSE, solo, etc. Mike is and always has been one of us. Legend.

Love this! Thanks for a great video and tip #1 was perfect encouragement for a musician accomplished on other instruments learning bass from scratch on my own. Really encouraging and helps me not be impatient to be accomplished immediately and enjoy the process of learning again 🥰
Your last point is so important not only for beginners but for us old guys too. Accept who you are and where you’re at. If you don’t take it from there you won’t grow and learn without getting frustrated.
Dude, I'm the rankest beginner, just diving into your lessons, and I just got to tell you how much I appreciate your teaching style.

The Bob Ross of bass. You're a great teacher! Thank you
Tip N°1 👍"Serve the music, play what the music tells you to play" Holy words.
Novice bass player here. Thank you for this good advise, I've mastered other instruments exactly the way you describe so I this makes an awful lot of sense to me and for the first weeks I managed to put bass practice in my daily routine and it is pure fun. Also, you have literally the most pleasant talking voice I have ever heard 🙂.
I have adopted Rich Brown as my uncle. I feel so comfortable sitting and practicing with these videos. Thank you so much (Uncle) Rich!
Just subbed.. your teaching style compelled me.. turning 61 and never tried to learn instrument or musical mastery.. hands are small and held the steering wheel of a tractor trailer most all of their professional career s I they are quite uncomfortable.. so I accept who and where I'm at.. wish me luck

Most awesome number1bass guitar lessons for beginners on KZread bar none, this guy deserves a gold medal as a bass player myself ( not a teacher/ instructor) this is the most VALUABLE Bass guitar lesson again for beginners, .. you will ever come across on any online platform relating to learning how to play the bass guitar, this guy is the most genuine teacher, instructor there is, so the bottom line for all you guys out there wanting to learn the bass guitar is, look no further.. Trust me, Believe me.... THIS IS THE ONE, THIS IS IT... HAPPY LEARNING.
I am a beginner and I'm super happy that I found you. Thank you
Hi 👑Rich🙏🏼❤️ Only started following you, from Friday 14.07.2023 can only do 1 vid a day, coz I'm abit slow in my learning processes, however, I LOVE ❤ HOW you, talk and deliver your lessons, you're extremely caring and thoughtful. Just wanted to tell you that. I'm from London, UK from Caribbean beautiful heritage. God bless you and family abundantly for now and the future. I, pray I progress nicely and I don't fall off the band wagon, as I tried YEARS AGO and found it too challenging, so I just hung up my bass on the wall to dust. But it's down now. So, I'm following u & make notes as I go along. Just wanted to say a heartfelt "Thank you" to you, 👑Rich, you're the BEST 🏆🏆🏆🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙌🏾💯👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks! Just got a bass, searching around for some online lessons to follow. I like your style, sir! I think I'll start by following along with your videos!
Back in the 1980s I always over did things on the bass. I always tried to play faster, harder, meaner than I ever could. All I did was to strain my fretting. Now I'm a lot older want to strip my technique down and do things right. Thank you for this Rich. Respects from the UK👍
I found my bass guitar teacher today after testing many. Thanks for your explicitness

One finger is fine. But I suggest practicing 8th notes and alternating between the 1st and 2nd fingers of your picking hand. You'll be a much more agile player, and you won't have to work so hard playing faster tempos.
Hi Rich. I started playing bass 6 weeks ago and came across your channel. I really appreciate your help and support. You're a natural teacher. I look forward to learning more. Thank you.
When you say beginners, you got my attention. Thanks sir!!! I'm teaching my wife and I'm an awful teacher. You got my back each time. 😉 What an amazing teacher you are!

I just found your channel. You're the teacher that I need. Thanks for the inspiration.
I haven't been a beginner since about 1986 but any lesson from you gets me in the mood to pick up a bass! Great tips for any level really, you're top notch my man.
Hey Rick, I am not the type of person that jumps in every video to comment, but I have to say that you have really reached me, and I pretty am sure I am not the only one. You say that we have to commit to the music and not to those (many) youtube pretending teachers that just show of their (actually fantastic) skills, I will follow your advice. I play the bass, just to enjoy a little bit of time for myself after the work. Looking forward more videos, thanks and keep the good work.
Literally just started learning/playing bass the other day and your channel is my favourite Bass channel I've found! Great Advice, I'll be implementing these for sure, despite just starting its definitely true what you say about seeing all these insane bassists and feeling mental pressure (which obviously seems ridiculous to compare yourself to someone who's probably studied the instrument and perfected their skills for 10+ years when you've only been playing literally for 2 days...) Bless you sir! The hero we need! I'll be learning a lot from your channel 🙏
Hey Rich, great tips for beginners and your last one (tip one) is definitely one of the most important ever for every musician, regardless if beginner or professional. I remember when I began playing and merely could play with open strings but made nonetheless music with the others. Bit by bit I made progress but the essence was always the same. For bass players it fits even more cause we are the glue between rhythm and harmony and our main objective should always be: serve the song 🎵 🎶 ❤️

I'm so happy to have discovered your channel. I'm just starting out, so much gratitude my friend!
Extension of Tip 2 using left hand thumb as fulcrum ... Starting at 5th fret across all 4 strings to cover the space of 5 frets try left hand fingering - 11234 - 12344 -11234 - 12344 & decending - 44321 - 43211 - 44321 - 43211. Great exercise to develop control whilst also playing the A chromatic scale. You're a great teacher Rich - I personally employ these fingerings when playing some of the more complex Barry Harris diminished 6th lines over Dominant chords 👍😊

This was fantastic. You're a great teacher, very calm and well spoken.
Hi, I am a beginner (started bass 3/4 months ago) and I just discovered your channel I really like the way you talk explain things and it makes me want to REALLY learn bass and not just to play famous songs without understanding the basses Thank you for your efforts.
There are more than enough bass teachers on KZread but we all need more of you! I appreciate you sir. I've been learning Simandl in the first 2 positions and sliding either my pinky or first finger back and forth to the 4th or back to the 1st fret. My hands are small but they're also old!
I love your personality and charactor. You are the perfect teacher that encourage! Thank you.

Awesome Advice Rich...! WOW.....I'm going back 60 years to my childhood hearing that from my music teacher. My music teacher many moons ago while learning keyboard said the "same thing". He did not believe in Ball Hogs. Or as he put it Show offs hogging the music. LOLOLOLOL Their will always be a specific place and time for that, in the music if ...like you said...... the music or melody calls for it. . The Tugboat theory is what music is about. Each instrument complimenting gently together to make a Glorious sound of all instruments playing together to make a beautiful measure of music. Thank You.

Totally great ! I just got a bass for Christmas after playing real guitars for decades (just kidding 🙂 ). This video is spot on with advice for getting started in a good direction. After playing thru this a number of times, I jumped on a backing track. It had an Am chord (flattened 3rd). I played an A. No one complained or stopped the backing track. 🙂 I look forward to following more of your excellent videos!
"Put on a U2 record... and test that theory" - Truer words have never been spoken ;) Your content is so rich (no pun intended)... I have come back to this video over and over. As an ear player, I'm really trying to buckle down and learn these notes. Thank you for this.
Thank you! I’m always so motivated after watching your videos 😁
Thanks Rich you’re such a great teacher. So calm and delightful to listen to. I tend to hop about and end up learning nothing! I will follow your advice 😁

I have watched several of your videos now and I think the first thing I'm going to be doing is memorizing all the notes .I'm ordering a bass kit today
I'm a drummer who wants to play bass. And fun fact, i also watch rob Brown 's drumming videos. RB, et RB are my two teachers. And both are really nice ! Thanks for your good spirit, thanks for this great tips !
YOU are an awesome teacher. I'm a retired teacher and use your vids to help beginners.
You are sooooo good at teaching!!! Thank you for taking the time and effort to teach bass basics! I just started playing!
my man! thank you!
I love RICH BROWN. You are so humble
So dog gone true I felt the same way two years ago, especially watching other KZread videos that was playing 100 mph, but telling me I can play like this in just two to 6 months lol I am definitely a tugboat 👍🏾 I love the way you teach man. So patient and calm.
Спасибо из холодной страны. Вы добрый человек. И учитель.
Richie it's super simple basic stuff but these are the building blocks. Kudos to you for sharing this with us. Thanks pal, it's just great 👍👍
Hi Rich, I added you into my daily to-do list. Love your teaching style. Your top tip is so important as I watch so many shredders it is hard to fathom their skills. I've been on my journey for about 4 months after not having picked up my bass for 20+ years. At 63 learning some chops.
Thanks Rich. I am a beginning bass player and this is the best advice I have seen yet.
Another video full of advice on technique and also words of encouragement. I remember telling someone I started playing Bass at 16 and a half. There was no encouragement, just a response of you'll never learn to play bass. I stopped for 20 odd years. I'm now 58 and I'm still learning. Thanks to guys like Rich Brown who obviously loves and knows his craft , I actually enjoy learning. Thanks Rich ! Your an absolute star 🌟
You are a great source of inspiration, I’ve had this bass sitting in my music studio for years and now I’m picking it up again and really starting to enjoy playing the bass again. I can’t thank you enough

Thanks for these tips Mister Rich Brown. You're a good teacher and tell very good words. Beginner bass player from France. Thanks again !
Great video! Want to get back to learning music after a long break, and the encouragment is super appreciated!
Really appreciate your vids. I consider myself intermediate but always watch beginner lessons jut to make sure. lol I always get something from it too.
Thanks for sharing this encouragement. Attainable tips, and as a newbie (Nov-2022), I can confirm that learning the notes first frets, especially on a simple song helps big time. I would also like to suggest the legendary Leland Sklar, who has KZread channel where we can see him play some popular James Taylor and Jackson Brown tunes. Really enjoy your channel and your chill-paced teaching method. Keep up the great work.
My first bass should be arriving within 2 days and I'm super excited! Always LOVED the sound of bass and the style. My fingers already hurt from, playing the guitar and they will hurt even more when I pick up the bass. I also don't have any role models on the bass or sth I just really love the style and sound which is probably for the best, because I am going in with no expectation at all, I just wanna have fun and improve where I can. Wishing all of you alot of fun too and keep playin.
Rich.... You are such a great relaxed teacher of the bass, especially for a beginner. How you describe how to make music instead of fingers all over the fret board (as a look at me musician) gives me so much more energy to chill and enjoy learning how to play. I have just purchased a bass, and will be spending the afternoon tomorrow going through a few of your chilled lessons. (Metronome on 80bpm, with the body sway and feeling the tempo) Happy days Rich...
Rich, your delivery and breakdowns of the lessons are superb! I'm loving every video.
