I loved Lady Bird, it's beautiful. Just a really strong year. It was one of the last ones to get knocked off honourable mentions (I limited myself to only eight).

The Florida Project is definitely on my top ten. A little disappointed that it wasn't nominated for Best Picture. The juxtaposition between the colorful childhood wonder and innocence and the dark reality of poverty and pain just makes this film one of the most heartbreaking films I've ever seen. Yet it was also optimistic and hopeful. This made me tear up a bit.

Usually I don't watch romcoms, but The Big Sick had me in all tears, made me laugh and it is just so refreshing

My favorite for the year is probably call me by your name. The storytelling by the music and the dreamy colors that play throughout important scenes compared to the contrast of darker, grey colors at the last couple scenes is just perfect. The cast was great and the whole movie was pleasant and intriguing

I agree with most of these, got Raw, Good Time & Killing of a Sacred Deer on my watch list. I listen to the Shape of Water soundtrack & it makes me cry because of how beautiful it is. Have to say Call Me By Your Name is up there for me, the father's speech at the end gets to me every time, it's like word for word from the book and Michael Stuhlberg does it justice. Princess Cyd was another fave of mine, beautiful little snapshot story of a teen staying at her aunts for the summer. Well written & the start really hooks you in.

Hey, you're back! I've been looking forward to this video 😊. I'm always curious to hear your opinions on films and, as I was sort of already expecting, you named a couple of titles that I hadn't even heard of yet, but am now very excited to watch. (So thanks!) Personally I was also profoundly impressed by Call Me By Your Name. I loved it overall and would even dare say that it's my favourite film of 2017, but especially the scene where Elio's father gives his speech was so raw, beautiful and important. As I was watching it, I remember thinking what a good thing it is that that scene (and the film in general) are out there now. I also very much enjoyed Thor Ragnarok, Blade Runner 2049 and Ladybird, as I'm sure you did too, but I understand it was already pretty painful to cut it down to these 10 (+8), so thanks for putting yourself through that for us! Also very happy to see you're doing better!

I had the privilege of spending a day with Sammy back in 2012 when Savannah came over from the US. I’ve been following his KZread ever since and he is a constant reminder that there are people around that love film and cinema as much as I do and hearing him talk about films this way fills my heart with joy. So happy to see raw on your list, by far the most visceral experience I've ever had in a cinema. Can't say I agree with you on 3 billboards, but I'm clearly in the minority there. There's a lot of crossover with my best of list but I'd like to shout out "My life as a courgette" and "In between" two other incredible directorial debuts from 2017.

i agree with a lot of your opinions, and have read a lot of your comments on call me by your name and ladybird but wanted to comment once again that i think those two films really took the cake for me this year. Ladybird I think had such a specific point to say about going to high school in california, I am glad it's getting the recognition it deserves and understand how it can be impactful for people anywhere to watch it, but want to say why i would understand it not being on your list as it might not hit you right in the forgotten memories like it did for myself. As for CMBYN i was absolutely struck by it's filmmaking just as much as it's story. I've read your comment about needing 2 viewings, which i think is interesting but a discussion about which I might find difficult over youtube comments. But the absolute luxuriousness that oozed from every frame, the simple pleasures of summer and the devastation held within the last 20 minutes I think made it a movie unlike i've ever seen and I actually worry that the (albeit astounding imo) storyline might be overshadowing the deft hand with which Luca Guadagnino had when making it.

I'm going back and rewatching these to get hyped for 2018 list!!!!

There are so many films I KNOW I should have seen but have yet to see but of the ones I have seen you were spot on Sammy.

Very good video, you articulated very well why these movies made your list and I can‘t fault you for not putting a certain movie on the list because 2017 was such a great year for movies. And I still haven‘t seen many of the ones you talked about! My personal favorite would be Three Billboards. I‘m glad you loved it as well.

Your number one is mine as well! It’s so so beautiful, I’ve seen it twice in the cinema already, I can’t say enough how much I love it!

Really good list. Great to see Good Time in the list. I would highly recommend Frownland from the same directors. Also Ingrid goes west is so underappreciated, Aubree plaza is wonderful in the film and needs better roles. Some of my favorite films of the year- A quiet passion, win it all(I would highly recommend Joe swanberg films, he is one of my favorite directors.)lady bird, Meyerowitz Stories, song to song, columbus, Logan lucky, twin peaks, easy. My favorite films from india- Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Angamaly Diaries( there is a new wave forming in the malyalam directors from india, also check out thithi), Haramkhor, Newton , bareliey ki barfi, gurgaon, jagga jasoos.

Definitely checking out your list, and I enjoyed watching this video so much! Not only do you manage not to spoil anything, you also tempt me to watch borrow (which I just cannot watch) and your speech so eloquent I could just keep listening to it (ever considered audio books?) A few more honourable mentions for 2017: 'Patterson' (hold up just discovered it's from 2016, but still please watch it) and 'The Florida Project'.

As per usual I havent seen any of these films (and realistically idk if i ever will) but I love hearing the way you talk about them!

I've added a few of these to my list (Paddington, The killing of a sacred dear and Raw) and I was already planning on seeing Shape of Water this week, so now I'm even more excited for it :) Lady Bird is definitely one of my favorite from this year. I've realized how much I enjoy the more quiet, and realistic stories (I've categorized them as 'snapshot films' in my head) where the plot isn't some fantastical story, but just shows an important point in a persons life. My favorite from this year, Call Me By Your Name, is also one of these. I think the love story was told so realistically and I'm especially impressed with Tomothée's acting; I think his impulses were spot on and especially the last shot got me on so many emotional levels. As always, it was interesting to hear your list of films and discover ones I wouldn't otherwise have known of :)

Man you don’t make many videos but every time you do i’m blown away. Your intelligence and eloquence mixed with your vast knowledge of movies & filmmaking makes for the best “top 10 lists” on this website. Lovely. I think my top 3 would have to be 1) Call Me By Your Name veeeeery closely followed by 2) Ladybird 3) Three Billboards :)

yes, oh my god, you made me want to rewatch the shape of water so badly. what a damn masterpiece.

It's true that Shape of Water is one of those movies where if someone were to just tell you the story like that without you having seen it, you would think that this is an incredibly weird story - that's what I thought. While watching the movie though, was when I realized why it was such an incredible movie. It takes up an odd love story and turns it into a beautiful one. It was so gorgeously filmed and the different themes that covered the movie were perfectly portrayed. Although during the movie I picked out many different flaws and things that I would've changed or done differently (like the length of the movie, I would've cut some parts out if I'm honest), it was after I came out of the cinema that I realized is what made it perfect. It gives room to so many different interpretations and views and that's what makes brilliant movies. I could rant more about this but I'm too lazy to type. But yes, definitely one of the most touching, heart-warming and beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Genuinely enjoyed this video Sammy. I would love to hear you go more in depth regarding Get Out or even Three Billboards. Also what were your thoughts on Lady Bird? I saw about half the films on your list but I would love a video dedicated to any of the films listed as to why you enjoyed them so much.

Poolina On first viewing I was very thrown by the casting. But I warmed to it a lot more on second viewing.

For a second I thought Dean was on dodie’s channel bc of the background but honestly this was a great video to watch first thing in the morning for me. Made my brain think :)

Impressive list. I admit that I think I've only seen a couple of these myself but I'm planning to check out Shape of Water tomorrow. A movie from this year that I really liked was Makoto Shinkai's 'Kimi no na wa' (Your Name). It's a movie about a boy and a girl who keep randomly switching bodies and about the connection that they form by sharing each others lives. Visually I think it's just such a gorgeous film, the animation is smooth and the colours are beautiful. The characters are fun and engaging and I found myself genuinely rooting for them. I'd definitely recommend watching it

My personal favorite this year was Phantom Thread. Its score, cast, writing...Everything worked so well together to build the tension, not to mention the beautiful costumes. A close second was definitely Three Billboards. And I definitely need to see Good Time, Ingrid Goes West, and Paddington 2!

I haven't seen Good Time yet, that's the only one I'm missing from your list. I'm a big fan of their previous films, Oscar Boyson is quite a hero of mine. The marketing came across as overly masculine which put me off a bit, I definitely will watch it but I chose to watch other films with similar releases. Really great list Sammy!

funny, I felt all the effects you described for The Shape of Water while and after watching Call Me By Your Name. Also, this 5 minute silence in the cinema after the movie ends, which everyone needs to emerge from the movie and come back to reality - that happened both with Dunkirk and Call Me By Your Name, but not with The Shape of Water. I also would love to see Three Billboards win an Academy Award. The way Martin McDonagh interweaves different storylines and characters and - as you said - the whole ambiguity makes it a total masterpiece...

Glad to see God's Own Country got a mention, was definitely one of my favourites and so underrated! It was so incredibly beautiful and part of it was filmed in my town

Three billboards was my favourite film of the year! I’ve yet to see the shape of water but will absolutely watch it when I’ve got the time/money!

I have got to recommend you watch Lucky. It's the directorial debut of John Carroll Lynch and led by the late Harry Dean Stanton. It's a beautiful piece that plays on the tropes of mortality and mortality. I expected it to be trying to watch another film with such common themes but Stanton did so well in this film that I didn't mind. This movie moved slowly and that allowed the dialogue to truly shine and gave the film a feeling similar to a play. This is one of those films that was too slow and not substantial enough for some friends but it stood out distinctly in my brain. The Shape of Water was also a favorite of mine. I particularly fell in love with the soundtrack and the sets of the film. I just loved how vibrant and Parisian everything was but wasn't with the Baltimore setting. I went into it knowing the costumes would exceed any expectations because practicals are largely what Guillermo del Toro is known for but not ready for it to dance on the line between fairy tale romance, drama, and musical. Coco hit me right in the childhood; I've been celebrating Día de Los Muertos since birth and seeing it all in a film with some of my favorite Latino actors made me sob from beginning to end.

I would say the One movie that really moved me in 2017 was A Monster Calls (It Came out in the US in 2016 but in the UK It was 2017 so I’m counting it) and the reason I’m counting it is because I still feel the love that I did when I watched the movie first to now. It may not be for everyone but the story and the acting spoke to me and really covered a beautiful but messy Story. However thats just my opinion and I didn’t watch a lot of films this year so Im not one to really chip in but I just wanted to share my thoughts with you.

I'm loving watching these top 10 films. I don't know how I miss so many good films and here is where I'm sure i'll find them. =) Sammy, do you have a place or website or excel sheet (idk) that you keep track of the movies or is just from your head? Great content man. PLEASE, keep it up. ;) **Edit: I feel the same way about The Shape of Water. What a brilliant piece of art.

I saw Three Billboards a couple weeks ago and I don't believe I've ever cried so much in a film. Seriously am looking forward to watching The Shape of Water.

A Wild Nathan Blade Runner was so so good. Not my exact cup of tea but mad respect for it.

yeah, shape of water is amazing (that score!) and i've seen it 3 times already thought that three billboards lost direction also big ups to a ghost story, my favourite film of the year last year, and also paddington 2 which everybody i saw it with was like "oh yeah, this is what we want more of from family films, this film is perfect."

Did you purposefully coincide the word "hatch" with a still of the main character with a bunch of eggs, or am I just crazy...either or, I appreciated it.

Came here for innuendo 'shimmens were shimmening' Sam and instantly fell in love with charming, articulate, passionate Sam. 12/10 a++

Coco affected me SO MUCH that when you mentioned it, I genuinely burst into tears.

Pretty solid list. I'd probably put Baby Driver as my number one since Edgar Wright is my god damn hero and maybe remove KOASD, Raw and Shape of Water off the list since I havent bloody seen them yet but I agree with this list on the most part.

I was so disappointed by Shape of Water. I thought it was a visually stunning film and the concept of an adult fairytale was exciting, but the dialouge was clunky and the relationship between Eliza and the fish man didn't feel developed enough so the second half of the film fell flat. Great list though, your picks are so interesting!

Seen a fair few of these but Im waiting a while to see Three Billboards, it has the vibe and attitude that I adore But what I am wondering is do I have to see Paddington to go and see and like Paddington 2
