I notice a lot of these traits in my aunt but she won’t believe me if I told her. She has a myopic view of what Autism is.

Okay, I’m trying to remember everything I related to because it was SO many of these things. The story part where you explain everything is SO ME! It’s impossible for me to tell a shortened version. Same with books. If I thought I missed something, I’d go back and reread it. The empathy thing where you have to have experienced the experience is the same with me, too. You explained it perfectly. The senses were totally all me, too. The food on my hands and the food temperature really hit home. If I’m eating yogurt, I can never finish it because it’s no longer super cold and it will literally make me gag. The only thing I differ from you on is that I LOVE rainy/cloudy/gray weather lol! I get excited when I wake up to that and grumpy when I see the sun 🤣 maybe it’s because I’ve only lived in SoCal and it barely rains. But I’ve always been like that! Thanks for sharing these, Liv! Great video as always. And I’d love to see an in depth video about your eating disorder and how it relates to your autism :)

Haha I completely relate to that first sentence because I have the same when I watch your videos!! And regarding the sun/rain, perhaps you've just been "oversunshined" in SoCal 😂 Thanks so so much for your sweet words, and yes I will definitely make a video about my ED and how I believe it was a manifestation of my autism! ily girl ❤️

It seems like every single time I watch a video like this, something new comes up that is like looking in a mirror. The whole "over-describing the movie" thing? I have two very clear memories about that. One's from my childhood, around eleven, when a friend asked me a question about a movie and then stopped me before I could answer, because "otherwise you'll keep going for hours". The other's from my twenties, when my then-girlfriend had seen the first half of a movie, and been interrupted and unable to watch the rest, and asked me how it ended. So I went through what I thought was the "short" version, in about twenty or thirty minutes. And she thanked me, and added "but I really just meant whether the main characters ended up together or not".

A very relatable video. I would like to challenge your use of the word "normal" for allistic people. Certain behaviours (such as frequent hand washing) may not be common amongst allistics, but they are very normal amongst the autistic community, and autism is a normal human variation. The way you talk about yourself influences how you think and feel about yourself. We are different, part of normal human variation, which is something to be celebrated.

That is a tenet I believe VERY strongly in! I totally understand where you're coming from and what you're saying. I do try and be more self-aware about this very subject. Somewhat of my uses of it here was more for simple shorthand but yes, agreed :)

The honesty thing! 😆 I have a terrible time Bluntly lying to ppl.. 😂 however- I can act, quite well. So I can act if I'm intending to act but if someone suddenly asks me something I'm going to have a terribly time making something up if I have to.

I relate to almost all of this!! Especially the weather indeed. It even causes me to have a much bigger appetite when the weather is rainy and I feel sad. The mood swings I expierence (not only day to day like u described but also within the minute) go hand in hand with the "unpredictable" world and smallest changes (those will make my mood swings).

I feel like I relate to so many autistic traits, but the sunglasses thing- I actually hate when ppl wear sunglasses because I cannot see their eyes & it feels like they are wearing a total face mask- I can't understand what they are thinking/ what their energy is- not sure if this makes sense, but it seems uncommon to me if a person is autistic (who generally have a hard time with eye contact). Anyone else?

Wow haha I don’t think I am autistic but I can relate to so many things! My family used to mock me bc I was „too sensitive“ bc I could for example hear my mom sneeze or cough downstairs (she has a dust allergy) or when I had to leave the floor if my mom fried meat in the kitchen bc I could just NOT stand the smell. And I don’t like hot food - lukewarm is okay for food that is supposed to be hot but I can't eat or drink things like milk or pudding etc if they are not icecold 🙊

Interesting video, clear and to the point. I wonder is Occupational Compulsive Disorder (OCD) partly to do with the need for control and order in ones life? It is something people invent, but instead of them controlling it. It often ends up controlling them.

Hi! What you said about being highly sensitive, detail-oriented, overwhelmed, having trouble in social situations, and having drastic mental health changes really resonated with me. I've been considering the possibility that I might be autistic for around a year now, and I feel confident that I do because when I see people talking about their autistic traits I almost always relate. The thing is though, that when I bring this possibility up to some friends and family, they are very quick to deny it. They never give actual arguments to this but they are stagnant in their position. With my family, I am confused on why they refuse to give it thought since throughout my life they have asked me if I am autistic as an insult, typically in response to me not realizing something in a social aspect or when I had meltdowns over overlapping sounds or loud noises. I hope this isn't abrasive or anything but I was wondering if this is something you've dealt with before? I think it likely just comes from the misconception and stigmatization of autism, but I honestly don't have the patience or articulation to explain or convince anyone away from their views. But at the same time I am somewhat worried that maybe I'm in the wrong or not actually autistic and I would hate to claim I'm something I'm not. Anyway if you have any advice or input that you find relevant to this, I would really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, what you're experiencing, both internally and externally, is all too common. Imposter syndrome hits us all, where we feel as if we've been invited into a party or friend group that's already started and we don't "fit." But I assure you, you fit and you belong. Self diagnosis is incredibly valid, and sometimes MORE valid than a formal diagnosis (which you should pursue if you feel strongly about this). Honestly, comparing notes with others on the spectrum provides much more day-to-day meat and potatoes affirming of traits than the DSM-5 provides. As for your family, you are right in that you aren't going to change their view point. The fact "autistic" is used as an insult should tell you all you need to know. What YOU believe and know is much more important and powerful. If they are using such a thing in a derogatory manner, it of course will paint their view of what being autistic means. Likely, they feel you being on the spectrum would somehow reflect poorly on them, which is also common. Do not let this behavior deter you for seeking your own truth. If this is resonating with you, it is for a reason. Explore. Either one of two outcomes shall occur: You discover you're autistic after exploring this notion further, either through more information or formal diagnosis or both; or you come to the conclusion this doesn't fit BUT you learn more about yourself in other ways. Never turn down the chance to LEARN more about yourself :)
