My tiny story

Ойын-сауық

My Tiny/Small house tour. Living large in a small space.
I purchased 2 lofted barn cabin shells a few years ago. My dad and I finished off the insides of both cabins in a little over a few months time.
The main cabin is 14' x 40' and a smaller guest cabin is 10' x 16'. The main cabin sits on a slab and features a large master bedroom, full size bath, cozy kitchen with full sized appliances and a guest loft above the kitchen. There is also a large storage area above the bath and utility room. The cabins were framed with 2 x 4's so we added 2 x 2's on all for the exterior walls and ceiling rafters to fur them out to get R-19 insulation in. The only difference other than size between the 2 cabins is that the small guest cabin does not have running water or a bathroom.
I have been a big follower of the Tiny/Small house movement and enjoyed watching and reading about other person's personal stories. Now it is time to share my story. I can say without a doubt that living small is the way to go. It may not be for everyone, but it's definitely for me.

Thank You for sharing your beautiful home with all of us. We are in the process of deciding which way we're going to go, a home as yours or a traditional log kit home. We are so excited to start over. We have 4 children, 2 are grown. My husband was a coal miner for many years and gave us a wonderful life, he lost his job with new EPA regulations and we lost everything. He then switched careers and entered the oil industry with the world's 2nd largest oil producer and that again put us into the same mess when they recently layedoff thousands. In WV you're either poor and on the system or your earning well over 100k annually. There's no medium. In the past 7 years we've lost it all twice! We've never asked for help or taken assistance, we have sold our homes and property then moved in with in-laws for several months to get back on our feet. This last time the economy crashed my husband was called back to work for 6 months and it was better than ever, then, out of nowhere he lost his oil job along with thousands of others. So, we decided to purchase a inexpensive Mobil home. While searching online I Stumbled upon small homes such as yours and fell in love! We will no longer waste our money on dwellings that are worth 1/2 of the selling price. We will pay cash and build a smaller home that can never be taken from us if my husband losses his job again or falls ill, nor will we ever be forced to sell our home again. We will now live of the grid! Solar power, well water, propane and wood to heat. We'll never be forced to give up our home and belongings again. Praise Jesus our family remains strong and together in good health, that's what matters in the end 💕 Thank you again for sharing your home. You've done a wonderful job!

my kind of house. I spent my younger years working in corporate America and thinking what you had defined you. wish I had realized how ridiculous that was earlier! being forced to live a simpler life has made me happier in a lot of ways. it's amazing how much you really do not need to make you happy. a cozy house and a few animals sounds good to me. once my son is grown, I will definitely be looking for my little spot deep in the woods!

That's a perfect size house for one person and animals. I like how you have arranged it, space is not cramped or crammed. But when the special one comes along you can then add on, that's what I like about starting small. We did that and now our place is perfect. All the best.

WOW! Your tiny house is beautiful. Love all the natural wood and green color. I also had a tiny space problem regarding doors. What I did, was buy PVC/Vinyl Accordion manufactured wood colored doors. They have Natural Oak, Walnut, Fruitwood etc. You can get an idea from Wayfair Website. These doors are perfect for your utility, service entrance, and closet door. Doesn't take space and the vinyl wood brings out the natural wood in your bedroom. I hope you feel better sir from your cold, and thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us.

When I saw the stackable washer and dryer closet, I said to myself, I wonder how he connected them once they were installed. Then the second time I watched the video I noticed the access in your utility closet. The first time you mentioned the sink being the service for your washer but I didn't get it. Now I see said the blind man. Very good idea. I'm making me a note. Leave rear access for washer and dry. What a great place for that access, in the closet. Thanks for sharing.

I would greatly appreciate a longer video or even a short series of videos on the electrical, plumbing, definitely the loft. I'm just at the point of designing mine - my stepdaughter lives with me and she wants the loft bedroom where I, being disabled prefer a main floor bedroom. The size of your loft suits her ... I may have others build the shell for me (my brain is more than ready to build but my body disagrees😉) as I do want a barn style roof. What a great lifestyle you've created for yourself and the animals! ✌💜

Thank you for the nice reply :). I will work on some new videos on the loft, and how the plumbing enters the house and how it is routed for the bath and kitchen areas. As far as the electrical all my wall are closed up so it would be hard to explain, but I can show how I did my main runs using the roof rafters and 2x2's.

Your home is the first tiny home I could see myself living in! I'm disabled, bum hip, and could never do the lofts, that you see in most tiny homes. I currently live in just under 980 sq. ft. and your bedroom is laid out wider than mine! My house is all living room and kitchen / dinning area with a small office off the back. It's perfect for me or one more, but I still have to much stuff.(My 2017 resolution is to get rid of the clutter) Yours is laid out so nicely and great colors too. Not cluttered and you never know you have pets. I wish you all the best with your home, you deserve it.`Dolly

I used the loft for a few months, but didn't like the occasional calling at 2am and going down the stairs. I built the loft taller than most. It does work, but at 40 I prefer my bedroom on the same level. Down sizing to having just what you want and need is a very freeing experience. I spent a few weeks figuring out how I wanted the floor plan laid out with consideration for all the wiring and plumbing. Although I did make quite a few changes as I built. Thanks for watching and taking your time to leave a nice comment. Best wishes. :)

I'm going to tell you I've watched a lot of videos of people who have made tiny homes from these cabins / barns and yours is one of the best. The layout is perfect you thought about everything and from a woman's point of view... The kitchen is excellent. good taste. I'm going to subscribe so I hope you keep doing videos. This is the first one I've seen

Yeah it's perfect for one or 2, I built an off grid bungalow 30 x 50, and basement same, any bigger for 2, is just wasting energy, I wanted a little more, so people could come stay for a holiday, I could easily stayed in this for 2.
