My Time With Kurt Cobain's Actual Guitar | Episode 2: VMA Strat | The Signed Nirvana Stratocaster
Музыка
Celebrating what would've been Kurt Cobain's 57th birthday by documenting the VMA Strat, his actual guitar. The Fender Stratocaster that was famously for the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards performance of Lithium. After it was smashed on 10/30/92 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it was signed by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.
A thorough visual record and historical analysis of Kurt Cobain's Fender Stratocaster, both the body and the neck. Every ding, scratch and mark. Nothing is overlooked.

@@404TVfr It's definitely possible, but would need extensive work. But at the same time, it's a fully signed body. Putting in a input jack would completely cover the "help me" stick person. So there's an argument to be made both ways, to restore it or to leave it as is

This is the Kurt Cobain birthday special? Another lucky moment for you Eric! I did not know the vma strat went through so much after being destroyed in Buenos Aries.
Looks like the first character of the neck would’ve been I, this making the serial I039699. Same year as Kurt’s Vandalism which is 1989-1990

He has great attention to detail, but I also wouldn't go that far. Though I will say he's inspiring to this fool (me) who never nicely recorded and uploaded his own covers of B-52s songs. ARGH.
MIJ guitars had prefixes of either A, E, G, J, U or T. Based off when the guitar was used it can only be an A, E, G, or J, based off the straight line you can make out on the attached part of the neck and the removed, My best guess is it's an E or a J. Which for timeline sake means it was built from 1984-1990. There is also the possibility of it being an I, but I and J are the same period of 1989-1990. My best guess is it's an I because there doesn't seem to be any curl to it based off the attached part of the neck. So overall my guess is I039699 (1989-1990)

Serial number is K039699, year of production of guitars with that serial is 1990-1991, guitar have vintage truss rod, single ply pickguard, that means it must be ST-62 Vintage reissue, its in their catalog of 1990 Japanese guitars. You can even see two little lines from K in the video.
The fact the owner reached out to you to get you to come over and document it says enough. Hopefully you get to document some more of Kurt's gear as I just get a sense of joy and amazement that you've already done so with two iconic guitars
Man i'm so jealous that you had a chance to see it
That’s so freaking awesome! Me and my 9 year old son are really big fans of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. My son actually introduced me to this channel. It’s really cool to see these kinds of things. I’m also glad that this piece of music history is in the hands of a passionate fan and not just some rich collector who owns football teams. Thanks for sharing this with us 😋
There’s no way those neck screws were there without a back plate. In fact, in the video of the guitar being broken I’m pretty sure you can see a neck plate… Earnie must have reclaimed it along with the electronics, and then put the screws back in
Dang it the premier is during school😭
Wow man im so jealous! Would love to see Kurts guitars in real life!
You should make your entire Nirvana gear update video!
It is amaizing video! Thank you for sharing this. Maybe Kurt bought this guitar with these burnts from sort of pawn shop in Japan, so the guitar has a tag but it is not brand new. For example check out how looks like Fender Stratocaster 1984-87 ST-362.

I think this might be the guitar yeah. The only differences from ones I could find online are that this has an 8 hole, not an 11 hole pickguard and that this has the serial number by the heel, not on the headstock. Side note, these '84-'87 japanese fender strats have the most incredible necks on them so if you get a chance to play one, take it.

I love that you have become the go-to person to document these relics on KZread. I'm sure you already know this, but you're going to keep getting these opportunities because you put out excellent work. You've made yourself an indispensable to us Nirvana guitar nerds. Kudos!
When going on the Fender website for the serial lookup, the complete serial number appears to be A039699. 1988-1999 '68 Reissue Fender Stratocaster: Vintage White Poly finish, basswood body, maple neck, 21 frets, bone nut, 3-ply pickguard, etc. Great video!
You’re like a human lucky charm for Kurt’s real guitars. The VMA strat is one of the more aesthetically better looking guitars for me and seeing you hold it is amazing. Crazy video! Edit: that poster holy shit

Amazing Eric!!! 🙏🏻
That’s amazing! This guitar has a very special place in my heart, this and the Hendrix Woodstock strat is why I purchased my Olympic white strat in ‘94. It’s interesting to see how mine is now much more yellow in its colour (it’s a USA one so possibly different paint?) but Kurt’s one still seems to be a close/true shade to the original.
Loving the video so far!! However you did forget one Strat: the one smashed at the first Hollywood Rock show, there were two black ones. I think the one at Hollywood Rock was a PartsCaster like the Reading strat. They're distinguishable by their damage status, and the Hollywood Rock one debuted at The Point Theatre. But holy crap, I never realized how intact the body was!
I love your videos man, your VMA strat in particular gave me the itch to do my own, first time wiring pickups myself too, such a badass guitar
You are so lucky! I listened to Nirvana casually over the years, but I didn't really dive into this rabbit hole until December last year when I started learning Teen Spirit and Come As You Are. Nirvana and Silverchair had a huge influence on The Moffatts final studio album titled, Submodalities, as well as their B-sides collection. You can also hear the Teen Spirit riff in their song titled, Born to Be Wild. So I figured studying those influences would give me a really good foundation, but I fell in love along the way! I'm in my late 30s, just now studying guitar fundamentals. I resumed the hobby just over a year ago after a 20 year hiatus. I quit guitar sometime in 2003 at the age of 17 due to motivation issues stemming from family circumstances. I picked up an aNueNue M-12, which is nearly identical to the ones used by Music Travel Love (formerly The Moffatts). I am looking to upgrade to electric within the next few years, and I thought that a Kurt Cobain setup would be a good start. Do you have any recommendations? Is there anything you would do differently if you started studying guitar later in life?
This. Is. Insane! I did wonder after the VMA tone video last week if something was in the pipeline! Nice one Eric, not sure what the time will be here in the UK but I’ll be watching it! 🎸

There is an article ( Ground Guitar) about Kurt and Krist building Mustang ( blue and pink ) in the garage . (Kurt:) We even built a bunch of Mustangs at one time. We bought some necks, and took pieces of wood and cut out the bodies and put necks on - and they were completely out of tune. But we did a pretty good job. (Krist:) We had this little assembly line in the garage, where we -incomprehensible- painted them. (Kurt:) Those were all destroyed in one tour. That was about like four years ago, probably. At least.
