It's absolutely hilarious that Yasuke said "We are the shadows" even though he's a *HULKING FIGURE* decked out in *FULL SAMURAI ARMOR* and is wielding a Kanabō; a weapon that is anything *BUT* discreet!

That’s why yasuke shits on the very idea of assassins creed. For one, samurai aren’t subtle in a such a way. Their armor stands out and is recognizable. Second, a black man ALONE would stand out in a crowd, which is why our heroes are always locals, so they can blend in with the population.

Idk I’m glad they put yasuke in the game, he’s actually a bit more historical than half the characters in AC. So idk why people are mad that he’s in the game, and I’m pretty sure majority of people are just mad about him. I get what the video makers points are, but unfortunately those aren’t the points the masses hold they just kinda think it’s wrong to make him black, thankfully it’s AC and the last few games were almost pure fantasy fiction so they can pretty much do the same with this, their historical accuracy definitely went down completely since origins. N I’m sure the Japanese don’t care, they have a million samurai ninja games you could choose from, example being rise of ronin and Tsushima. Really the only things against him being a character is race and personally I believe that’s a weak point, considering how much historical inaccuracy is already in these games

@@XindaProd I’m starting to question your intelligence. You completely undermine any argument you might have had by saying that the last few games were almost pure fantasy while saying Yasuke being a real person is a good thing. Those two don’t work together as arguments. Moreover, there is a very real problem with Yasuke being black if you’re going to use him as a playable character in an AC game. He quite literally cannot blend into the population by any stretch of the imagination. Part of the point of AC gameplay in cities is that you can do something violent, do some parkour to get out of there, then quietly slip back into the city streets and remain unnoticed (how well the game actually handles that is another matter). That doesn’t work when you stand out in a crowd no matter what clothes you wear.

Yes, I mentioned that. But that doesn't change the issue. Let me explain it this way: If you swap between both characters in game without ever leaving the animus that means the DNA sequence in the animus connects to both characters. Otherwise, in order to switch, you'd have to pick a different DNA sequence to shift to, right? So...if in game you don't have to switch DNA sequences to switch characters, what does that mean? It means that one DNA sequence will connect to both characters...which means they are related...which means that the DNA comes from an offspring of these two individuals. Now, the animus pilot may not be that offspring...but the DNA they get WOULD be. So the situation does not change.

@@alexanderrow7643 I'll grant you, he probably won't be collecting shattered samurai hymens like Benkei collected the weapons off chumps who tried to cross his bridge. However, these people are cut from the same cloth as the development staff that 1.) Allowed the Last of Us 2 to have Abby and Neil Druckmann performing sweaty, dirty, grunting backshots in front of the camera as they both seemed to suffer from heartburn and 2.) Thought it was NOT racially insensitive to have Miles Morales replace Thor and wear Yeezy's, spray graffiti on Mjolnir and talk about "Odin's low taper fade" as he "Creased the Jotnar's Jays." So it's very likely in a side mission they'll be unable to not reference Yasuke having the biggest British Broadcasting Channel on the entire archipelago and how much better a family sized Snickers is than a rice grain. And like Raven said, the easiest way to get away with both characters being playable at once despite not being blood related is to have them both make chocolate rice porridge in the epilogue. Granted, Ubisoft is going out of their way to insist Yasuke is LGBTQP+, but that just means he will be G until the very end where they make him B for the purpose of the writing. Not to mention there's a good, not likely but believable chance he's going to do something with little paige boys. Why? Because Ubisoft hired a historian who focused on "The unrestrained, pure, PRIMAL passions of monks and little boys" and you can bet they'll talk about how Hideyoshi did more than polish yari with a little, prepubescent Ishida Mitsunari, and how Nobunaga was sipping more than green tea with his squire boys. She's somehow turned a creepy shotacon/fujoshi fetish into a university degree, she'll definitely use that as an excuse to imply stuff in fades to black (I'm being charitable because I really, really don't want to imagine a world where Ubisoft would render a CGI kid getting it Cuties-style and thinking "Yeah, this doesn't make the shattered, sour fragments of my soul sizzle and burn away in agony, let's ship it worldwide!")

Asian here. My friend wanted to play GOT so badly but he doen't have a playstaion, so he bought Nioh1&2 and told me to play with him last year. He could not stop complaining about playing William instead of a Japanese, and as soon as he got enough 武功 (in-game currency) to buy characters' skin, he swop the protagonist character immediately. I told him you should be grateful because KT most likely done this to make the game more appealing to western audience, if it wasn't for William, we wouldn't get Nioh at all. Nioh 1 is the first game that let us play as a fully armored samurai ( with helmets, damn it! ) back in 2016. (And after Nioh gained its reputation, they put an asian guy on the front cover of Nioh 2) I had a conversation about the difference between Yasuke and William with other friends. And we came to this conclusion: William plays a role of a camera man. The story of Nioh 1 is told from the perspective of an outlander which is alright. While in Yasuke's case, let me quote my friend: 'When a protagonist who is not a major nation sets the stage for turmoil in a region, it is difficult for him as a protagonist to embody what the majority of the groups on that stage should look like. Because he really has little to do with this turmoil. The group he belongs to is not the "protagonist" of this era. Relatively AC chooses the main nation of a region or a minority but not an isolated ethnic group as the protagonist. Yasuke is an isolated case. He didn't grow up in the war-torn Senguku period, he didn't experienced those family changes, he also did not receive orthodox Bushido education. As a result, is this role suitable? It’s not completely inappropriate, but it’s definitely not the most suitable. Because he does not belong to the most suitable group. To make Individuals who do not belong to the builders or main groups of the culture of this region and era be the protagonists is one of the main feature about wokenism. It’s really not unreasonable for Ubisoft to be criticised.'

I think William Adams was put into Nioh (being a Japanese developed game) to appeal to the Japanese audience, not the western audience. Japanese have a general fascination with Europe, and it was likely seen as a better selling point (to them) than using a Japanese character. It was also riding on the heals of the Witcher 3 which was very popular in Japan, and the depiction of William Adams is suspiciously close to Geralt in the Witcher. AC:Shadows, being a western game primarily meant to appeal to a western audience has very different ideas and motivations around these characters, and will get a very different reception because of it. I think it reveals a bit of ignorance when people counter this AC:Shadows criticism with "what about the white dude in Nioh".

I am Japanese and my wife is African, but she is no longer in this world. I wanted to share my opinion about the game. ubisoft mentioned the accuracy of the story in the Assassin's Creed series. But the problem is that the setting like structures, houses, nature, objects - everything is bizarre and not Japanese but Chinese And the protagonist, Naoe, doesn't look Japanese but has more the ethnicity of Vietnamese or Korean or Thai.she looks like liu kang swap gender And this is the problem I have than others. If the idea is to create a game in the correct environment and Japanese traditions settings And that has to be done properly, in my opinion. The problem with Yasuke, I think, is that we Japanese expected more of a representation of a famous shinobi or samurai to represent the land of the rising sun. And I think if we wanted an African protagonist, I would have liked it more if it had been set in a traditional Mozambican environment with an African protagonist. More importantly, this is the first time that Ubisoft has decided to use a main character as a historical figure rather than a secondary one. And I think that's what created the controversy that's going on right now.

Will you be making an AC Ranked video when this game releases? (Nevermind I just got to the end of the video) Also correction, you're mistaking Ishida Mitsunari with Akechi Mitsuhide. Mitsunari led the Eastern army against Ieyasu at Sekigahara, I don't think Mitsunari was very well known around Nobunaga's death. Mitsuhide was the general that betrayed Nobunaga at Honnoji. Both names are similar though so it's understandable lol My problem with Shadows isn't the characters, it's that I don't want all of the rpg mechanics like the combat, levelling system, fantasy enemies, and all of that stuff. I'd prefer a game similar to Unity but Ik it's gonna be like Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla.

Ordinarily I would have enjoyed the inclusion of Yasuke in an AC game. However, considering the political environment, and the reason why Yasuke is even included in the first place: (DEI) I'm probably going to skip this one. Also, why make him a main playable character? He still could have been incorporated without needing to be a major role.

I'm sorry that I have to correct you, I know how much of an enthusiast of japanese culture you are, but Nobunaga was forced to commit seppuku by his retainer Mitsuhide Akechi, not assassinated. Mitsunari Ishida clashed with the Tokugawa at Sekigahara almost two decades later (Miyamoto Musashi - the inspiration for the Aramusha was part of the loyalist Western army at the time - a decade before his infamous duel with Kojiro Sasaki). Two different people.

For the whole "how can the 2 characters ne interchangeable?" part, from what I've seen, these two characters are at odds with each other, Samurai vs Ninja. They could have the a Templar pilot looking into the Samurai's memories and the assassin pilot looking into the Ninjas memories. Then you could choose which side to align with and have two different potential endings. Probably not the explanation but that would at least be better imo

My main issue with this game trailer, is the same issue than William Adams in Nioh or other Yasuke iterations in other games. Is that these two guys were apparently skilled warriors (William was a royal navy officer and Yasuke was bodyguard for portuguese and italian). But each times, in these games, they made them fight like experienced Samurai (which takes decades of practice). Especially Yasuke only trained kenjutsu for 1 year... They should start the game by fighting with european moves, especially Yasuke probably benefited of some portuguese/italian training which had their own way of mastering sword fight. And progressively the player should introduce Samurai moves they learn during the game, with a kenjutsu skill tree. It make sense he don't have any issue to master a spear or a club, these are war weapons. Made for battlefield. Easy to learn for experienced warriors like them. But using katana like a master duellist and holding it like an experienced Samurai like in the trailer, it's kinda dumb. Especially if we face Hanzo. Or other famous japanese duellist of this time, with some 1v1 quest. Will feel odd to be able to beat them in katana fighting. Ditto with the japanese samurai bow. Take years of practice. When it's easy to imagine Yasuke being good with a rifle/gun. Honestly I think the game would have been better with 3 characters. Yasuke the brawler, with spear, club, nagitana, rifle. Excellent on the battlefield to deal with several enemies. Neutral relationship with clans because outsider. Naoe the pure assassin, need to live in shadow, despised by every clans because kunoichi. And a third character similar to Hanzo, good in duel, maining katana, master of kenjutsu, not too bad in stealth but can't be involved too much with brotherhood because prioritize Japan, side with some clans, but is the enemy of some other clans. Also he is wearing a way too much decorated and expensive armor. He looks like a Shogun. I don't know if it's the ornament, but it's way too much. Especially that we can see all other warriors in the trailer, having more reasonable armors. I think the armor of Yasuke in the upcoming Takeshi Tikano movie looked nicer because simpler. Also hope we can change Yasuke haircut in the game, tiring to see game developers giving only the 2 same haircuts to every black protagonist. But that armor in the trailer make me feel that the FOMO of the game will be similar to AC : Valhalla with unrealistic, crazy and over-decorated armors...

I also think Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima were better written with more interesting characters as the writing in a lot of Ubisoft's recent titles has been abysmal. I think to stand out they could've set a game in China or Korea as you don't see those countries in games too often. I mean as an homage to Shao Jun you could make an Asian AC game with only a female lead. Have her start out as a concubine and then be freed by an assassin. Have her use her seduction and charm to lure guards into secluded areas and then assassinate them. Maybe she uses a bladed fan or hairpin as her weapon showing her feminine grace and assassin-like precision.

What I THINK they will do is this: Yasuke will be Oda's lap dog...doing whatever he's asked. But as time goes on he starts to see that Oda is treating him no differently than the Portuguese, and he'll realize he's just a slave in fancy armor. So he'll turn to the side of the assassins and start to rebel against Oda or Hideyoshi or some other high ranking samurai. He'll start as a villain to Naoe, but then gradually become an ally and then a lover. Then the two will assassinate Oda...or Hideyoshi...or some daimyo in history. That is my current running theory.

I would disagree with you about the Animus thing: As of Black Flag, we don't need the animus user to be descended from the Assassin, we just have their genetic data and access it. There's no reason the animus can't take two genetic samples and build a cohesive narrative with them together. Since the first game the animus has been able to translate for the user, and there is allowance for things not being 100% accurate (this is the whole basis of synchronisation). It's otherwise not unfeasible that in the hundreds of years since the game takes place, that descendants of both characters produce a child together.

This is why i wasn't excited or wasn't even holding my breath for this game. there are no records or evidence of yaskue being samurai, you cant just become samurai like that, you are BORN samurai, you are trained from a very young age into adulthood, yaskue was in Japan for what? 15 months? 3 years? How could he learn what takes years to master in such a short time? Oda nobunaga had him dressed him up with a short sword and was parading him around like some exotic pet. Out of all the war heroes, generals or enemy's of oda nobunaga they choose yaskue. If he was in the game as a quest giver or something that would have been great, not as a protagonist.

@@eduardor-o4884 I see here why you might be confused. So “for his appearance alone” may have racial inclinations, but not only. Nobunaga would not have recruited Yasuke if he did not think he would make a fine warrior. Think, what would you do if you were a noble lord, and you found a man who looked bizarre, almost as if he were from another world altogether, yet he had no promise in combat potential? Not only this, but his people are often bought and sold into forced servitude. Would you: A: Have him as a spectacle in your house that also serves you without choice of protest. B: Have him join the ranks of combat, where he will unceremoniously die and cause you to lose a prized specimen. It is clear Yasuke was not chosen by merely his complexion alone, though it still would be a significant reason - as his skin color would be intimidating in conjunction with his height and build. Yasuke did not commit seppuku after Nobunaga’s death because he immediately went to serve his son, Nobutada. Following Nobutada’s death, Yasuke was captured by Akechi Mitsuhide, who sent him to a Jesuit mission church.

Like sure there’s automatic weapons and melee wouldn’t be useful but you would have the advantage of being stealthy in dense jungle and I would like either side be it a North vietnamese assassin or a American GI or Green Beret who’s an Assassin or hell even south Vietnamese or ARVN Assassin. And given this would be the time period we’re Black people and Latinos are let in the US army and USMC and the army has made it less segregated (not completely but still) it would also make sense for a black assassin in that period. Hell how about a American Civil war Assassins Creed as a escaped ex-slave doing discreet missions on behalf of the Union against the Confederate army, that would work as well but of course this is current Ubisoft and by the way they’re heading all that I said ain’t never going to happen.

Here are my two cents. Just my theories and opinions. 2:38 - They mentioned in the "AC Shadows Explained" video, how unification means different things to different people during that time 4:45 - Thats filled by Naoe. A Japanese "no one" who is an Assassin in feudal Japan: thats what everybody wanted and we got it. Yasuke is, like you said, the first main character who was a real person and Ubi is probably testing how thats accepted by the players. AC had a bad rep for not trying anything new and now being able to play a historical figure, thats totally fine imo. If you don´t want to play as him, you don´t have to. Just play as Naoe and stumble upon Yasuke in cutscenes. 5:12 - That applies to the assassins. My theory is: Yasuke isn´t an Assassin for the majority of the game so there´s no need for that "work from the shadows" mentality. He´s fighting his battle (which we experience) and probably needs help from the Assassins or teams up some other way. 6:24 - I think if they would´ve used just two Japanese Samurai or Ninjas, there would be to much similiartiy to Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima. That game is already titled the "not ac in Japan" since its launch and they wanted to differenciate them self a bit more. 6:45 - There is Naoe 7:11 - Its not and you´re controdicting yourself here. First you said, your problem with Yasuke is his historical origin. Now it´s disrespectful to Japanese audiences. The feedback from japanese players that I saw so far was mixed, true, but still: there is Naoe 7:37 - They could explanin it like in AC Unity where it was more like an experience than an connection to the ancestors. You had the """Option""" to pick from multiple scenarios (all of the old games plus some more) and actually play as two different people, the templer and Arno, that don´t have a connection by blood. The whole importance of the animus has been toned down anyways since AC 3. 9:14 - Nioh 2, succesor of Nioh 1 where you played as an Irish dude in Japan and there wasn´t a great uproar. Just saying. 9:40 - I agree. the templars should be shown in some form in every AC reveal trailer. 14:15 - Ghost of Tsushima is amazing, just needed to throw that in there 15:33 - 3rd of my points 16:10 - In Yasukes case, its most likely ment literally. Stealthing around in bushes and actual shadows (according to leaks, there´ll be a mechanic to extinguish torches) 16:27 - Aveline wants a word with that (but sadly, yes thats most likely the case and with the response to the game so far, its not surprising). We also don´t know yet how the story is shifted and whos the real main character. It could be Naoe 18:11 - Except for the reasonable critics like you, the racists and the dumb people, there have been many voices who are looking forward to the game. Hell, even my friend who never touched a single AC game in his life and has no interest in the series said, hes gonna buy it, if he likes the shown gameplay since he loves the setting and the characters look interesting But yeah they did definatly waited too long. This setting should´ve been released instead of Valhalla 19:27 - earlier point: Yasuke most likely isn´t a real assassin unlike Naoe 20:37 - Looking back, most AC trailers dropped between april and june. Makes sense to start the marketing half a year in advance and no, I´m not like "lEaVe ThE mUlTi BiLlIoN dOlLaR cOmPaNy AlOnE!!!" thats just my thoughts about the video and the game

Did they say you could do that? If so…why add him? Are you honestly telling me you don’t know why they added him? It’s not to test waters…I think you know why they added Yasuke. Be honest with yourself at least. 3. Oh silly me…I thought a game about assassins would feature assassins as the main characters. But if Yasuke isn’t going to be an assassin, then…why add him? Gotta wonder why? And besides, that’s your theory. Sorry, I just don’t see it. 4. Yes, let’s be different from the two games that are super successful and instead cater to a inclusivity agenda. Because…that works so well for all the other companies that do it. All they had to do was take the concepts that Ghost and Ronin ran with and just apply the Assassins and Templars. I don’t see why that would have been a problem. People would have praised them for actually showing integrity. 5. Yes we do have Naoe. So why add Yasuke at all? Thanks for pointing that out. 6. I did say that my issue with Yasuke is that he’s a historical figure and the game shouldn’t use historical figures as playable characters. I then move on to my next point that Japanese audiences will be upset that, instead of their own ethnicity being represented, they hare having Yasuke replace any possible Japanese male character. I don’t see how that contradicts anything. IN FACT you JUST pointed out how the Japanese fanbase is ‘mixed,’ so you’re aware that I’m right, but rather than concede, you just say ‘but what about Naoe,’ so I will again say: “Exactly…we have Naoe…why add Yasuke?” 7. You’re aware how much of a reach that is, right? You say that the importance of the animus is toned down? I guess I missed it’s importance in Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla and how the characters had to gather the DNA information necessary to keep diving into what they needed. 8. …Nioh and Assassins Creed are not the same game. Wanna know the difference: The ‘Irish Dude’ you run around in Japan as is William Adams. He was a real guy. Why am I okay with him? Because anyone who looked at Nioh expecting historical authenticity missed the giant fucking demons you have to slay. Assassins Creed has ALWAYS aired more on the side of historical authenticity with minor liberties taken. Nioh is unquestionably fantasy. Not only this but Nioh was the first game of its kind with no expectations laid upon it. Assassins Creed Shadows has expectations laid on it based on the deeds of the entire franchise. This criticism was a weak cope, and you know it, as it completely distanced itself from the argument and was just your attempt at what-about-ism. Weak. 9. Good. Glad you agree. 10. Good. Glad you think so. 11. 3rd of my responses. 12. In the Trailer Explained video they said Yasuke would be the less stealthy character…don’t know what your point is. 13. I was referring to the first flagship game. Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla have all been very wishy washy about their female additions. They will advertise male leads in their trailers, then make the females canon. I would prefer them just pick a stance and take it. 14. There are many MANY reasonable people out there who don’t want to play this game, and there are MANY reasonable people who want to play it. But that does not detract from my criticisms. Saying your friend wants to play it ‘and they don’t even care about AC games’ doesn’t prove anything. What does any of this anecdotal evidence indicate? And earlier response: Then why even add Yasuke at all? 16. Even so, still find it hilarious. Good talk.

@@RavenKnightYT Sorry I took so long, but here’s my response 2. they said you can switch between them anytime so that sounds like, the player can (atleast for the most part, except for maybe the intro) play as one. Why add him? Because he’s part of the samurai history of the period and he sounds absolutely badass 3. there have been multiple games where the main character doesn’t start out as an assassin and won’t become one for a while (bf, Valhalla, odyssey). 4. yes, inclusivity is probably a factor too, but as long as he fits in (which he does) it’s totally fine imo. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I read some strong „go woke, go broke“ out of this point. Looking at the preorder on PlayStation alone (they shouldn’t exist for a game that didn’t show any gameplay yet, but that’s a different topic), the game is one of the most preordered games atm so people are definitely interested and I doubt the game will sell poorly. 5. to broaden the playstyle. Where the old games were pretty basic and slow in fights, the newer ones embraced more of the action rpg side of things since the taste of gamers changed. With yasuke being the samurai warrior who can seek combat and naoe being a true assassin, there is a more distinct line and playstyle to choose. It wouldn’t look right, seeing naoe run into a fight with a kanabo in light armor. If there would be heavy armor sets for her, the game would become too much of an rpg again which had a bad rep in the latest main line titles. 6. alright, I misunderstood the sentence structure, sorry about that. Regarding the opinion of Japanese audiences, there has been an revelation in their opinion since I wrote my comment. I can’t speak for them nor can I read Japanese without a translator, but I’ve seen quite some posts over the past day of Japanese audiences being excited about yasuke, since he is apparently kinda popular? That’s atleast what swept into my social accounts. There has also been some sort of manipulative hate campaign from what I saw, of none Japanese accounts writing negative and hateful comments in broken Japanese. 7. that’s actually not a reach at all. Shadows will be the first game in the ac infinity … thing where all future games will be accessed from. Basically a real life version from the unity beginning, like a big hub for the games. 8. ac takes place in a historical world, expended with fantasy / sci fi elements. The world / societies being build by godlike beings and carrying their weapons and artifacts isn’t something I would call „minor liberties“, but ok that’s your opinion, if you see it that way that’s fine. You’re saying, you expect authenticity from ac games. We can both agree, that yasuke was real right? So he was an authentic part of the history of the samurai and this time period. To play as him seems pretty authentic tbh. If you don’t want to play as actual people who lived, that’s fine and totally valid. 11. 3rd/4th of my responses 12. I think we might have talked past each other on this one. You questioned how he would work from the shadows with being a known person. He will still be able to stealth a bit and when he broke the two guys through the shoji (I think that’s what they’re called) he was a literal shadow. Even tho it’s unlikely to social stealth with him, there are more ways to „work from the shadows“. Pretty wide term 13. ok true, revelation wasn’t a flagship game. Origins was advertised with bayek and he is the main protagonist and also canon? Or did I miss something? I somewhat agree tho, the characters in Valhalla and odyssey where definitely wishy washy and they should just commit to one. Which they did with Naoe 14. no it doesn’t detract from your criticism. Like I said, you made some valid points and expressed your concerns in an articulated way. I just wanted to point out some parts of that to maybe provide a new angle on your criticism. I’m not hating on you or anything, I just wanted to share a different view. Stating my friend is suddenly interested in the franchise, correlated to your point the game wouldn’t satisfy audiences. Which it will. 16. wouldn’t be surprised if they did push it forward a bit tbh Cheers

I'm aware. But my point was this: The player can switch perspectives between Yasuke and Naoe as they like...without leaving the animus. In order for that to be possible, the DNA sequence has to match both people...in order for that to work, they both have be related to the animus pilot. That's how it worked in Origins and Syndicate since in Syndicate the Frye twins were siblings and in Origins the animus pilot had to get DNA from both Bayek and the wife, and (if I recall correctly) she had to step out of the animus and adjust it before she could switch. She couldn't just do it while inside the animus.

Well, technically we should have China with Jade. Three issues with it : 1) It's supposed to be a mobile game, which sucks for a game that is supposed to be like Origins 2) No Shao jun, instead it is another chinese protag. Which could be fine, but still why not go for the already established character in desperate needs for developping their story 3) They aren't talking about Jade anymore, which is kind of wierd since it is supposed to be their big deal with Netflix.

I don't think dating a black man as a Japanese person would be a problem. In the Sengoku period, of course, it's possible that it was frowned upon. But there aren't any major claims that he was abstinent. And because there is very little information on Yasuke's life, they have a rather large void that they can play with narratively, and it's not hard for them to write it in that they were secretive about their relationship. My biggest fear has less to do with the fact that Yasuke is a main character (and potential love interest for this Japanese woman), and more to do with the fact that it's Ubisoft, who has been shafting this series and multiple other game series continuously since Odyssey, plus their egregious monetization scheme. If the story is well written, then there is no reason to be upset with the main characters. The shady part has more to do with the monetization, which regardless of whether or not the story is good, is disgusting.

  • @RavenKnightYT

With all due respect, the issue I was pointing out was not one of historical inaccuracy but one of public backlash. I'll explain: While it certainly isn't known if Yasuke had any sexual relations in Japan, that's not the main problem. In Japan today, there is something of a discriminatory view of mixed race offspring, particularly of black and Japanese offspring. These couples and their children tend to get a certain degree of bullying. I'm not saying it's right, but it is a thing to bare in mind. Since Ubisoft (and companies like them) tend to avoid offending or upsetting the asian consumers (since they represent such a high consumer basis), I'm surprised they would possibly make this choice as I have no doubt it would upset a certain degree of the Japanese player base that share this discriminatory view. One can say that they SHOULDN'T be discriminatory, but that's hardly the issue I was raising.

@@RavenKnightYT I see what you're bringing up. However, I do want to bring up a counterpoint, that while Ubisoft unfortunately has fallen privy to the idea of pandering before, it doesn't necessarily mean they have to now. Who knows, this could be the first God story they write since the Assassins Creed of old. I don't think worrying about a discriminatory crowd is in their best interest. Whatever the case, I feel like the whole Yasuke thing, even with this particular reason, is a red herring being used to distract the general public, while they employ psychological tactics to get people to spend money on versions that likely aren't even worth the asking price. I think we need to look past this controversy and ask the bigger question: is this game even worth something like $110 or $130?

  • @RavenKnightYT

    @RavenKnightYT

@@trishademilion5133 The pricing issue is, in of itself, a problem. I agree with that. I also agree that this Yasuke situation is a distraction tactic...but here's why I think they did it: They are going to feed off the controversy. Right now the consumer public is divided about the game. Some detesting the decision and others praising it. The more these forces push against each other, the more those who defend the Yasuke decision will want to get the game either out of sincere love of the representation and agenda, or just to spite the opposition. Thus they can more easily sell an overpriced game to the masses fueled by a controversy of their own making. I've already had a few people tell me that they want to buy the game now either JUST because Yasuke is in it or so they can stick it to the haters. And I have no doubt that's what Ubisoft was hoping would happen.

I know this is probably gonna be a hot take, so bear with me. Honestly, I get why you’d be upset, but the historical inconsistency itself this game has to offer isn’t really bringing anything new to the table. AC is more like alternative history rather than historical fiction to me. Also, Yasuke being a main character would only be a real problem if Naoe won’t be playable (which she will be), so playing as a foreigner shouldn’t be a big problem. I get people would want the male character to be Japanese, but I think the Japanese could use more foreign main characters - who aren’t white dudes. I know you didn’t mean anything racist by it, but I have no qualms with the Japanese outraging about these two main characters having a child. Sure, you’re correct it’s going to hurt reviews from Japan, but in fact, I want it to happen to introduce to their early generations something less static. Black people are often dogs in Japanese media, while white people are basically worshipped. I mean for god’s sake, you can see it in their anime - everyone has big eyes with colored hair (Eurocentric features!), which brings me to my next statement. The Portuguese are likely than not going to be the main templars of the game. As you said, where did Nobunaga get it from? We see the Portuguese ships for a reason. So a Japanese game that has a black man as a hero for Japan while (some) white people are the affront should be seen as a breath of fresh air for Japanese media. I don’t really care for the assassin’s creed franchise anymore, mainly because of a certain piece of anti-ideological lore that turned me off from it altogether, but I will say this is a pretty interesting topic, and I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions on the matter.
